Hrm... Funny you say this, because all the people I personally know who have participated have done so with their main characters... Maybe I just happen to hang out with the kind of person who doesn't need to hide behind disposable alts. If you are in a miner during hulkageddon:
1. Don't afk. AFKing in eve in your miner during hulkageddon is like walking into prison naked with "**** me" tattooed on your butt. 2. Change your fit. Concord responds quickly in hi sec and according to one mmo site I read, a good tank fit might keep your hulk alive long enough for concord to pop the other guy. At least someone with a scanner might move on to surer pickings. If the pirates do pop, carry a salvager II and get loot off of them. 3. Since this focuses on high sec, get some friends and mine in low sec. 4. You can always get out of your hulk and be a pirate/run missions for a week or two.

And yes, hulkageddon IS a festival of the idiots; those who regard highsec as a 'no risk isk' source and sit around without properly defending their ships with awareness and correct fitting sense.
There is no way to defend any soft target in EVE effectively whether in Empire or 0.0.
So long as the attacker is willing to die in his attack he can take out any soft target before any defenders can take him out.
The only exception might be if you had 2 or more Logistics cruisers constantly repairing 1 soft target. Due to boredom though they are likely to look away and something bad happen.

You upset cause you wont be able to use your bot program or just sit afk??
Lighten up, this is a game, if ya make so much money from mining, just sit it out or get a temporary cheap ship during this time!
Better yet, actually fit your ship with a tank and watch local closer! |

so... go ahead and petition them.
As far as I am aware creating & biomassing alts to avoid the sec status hits is not looked upon kindly by GMs.
(the risk of getting petitioned and facing GM repercussions is not "no risk" at all, imo)

To the OP:
You do know that it's utterly easy to avoid getting Hulkageddoned, don't you?
1. Stay aligned at speed in your Hulk 2. Pay attention 3. If someone warps in in a combat ship, warp out
You have at least 10 seconds from you can see them until they can target you, so you got plenty of time to get out...

This Miner / Industrialist is all for Hulkageddon. What's not to like about a concerted, widespread, and single minded effort to clear away afk miners and the 'macroer menace' like some epic bibilcal catastrophe! It's an absolute 'levelling of the playing field'!
Crying about Hulkageddon does no good either. The best thing a legitimate miner can do is.... hop in a cheap throwaway ship, and join in the fun!

Edited by: Kerist Lafayette on 13/02/2011 12:30:17 I don't get this.
I'm a miner, griefers annoy me too, and I know the "hulkageddon is against bots" line is just b*ll*cks - in fact they target specifically non-bots because that way they get a "better" reaction, and they even award a special prize for that.
In spite of this, I enjoy Hulkageddon. I fly a reasonably tanked Hulk in highsec during the event, and collect gankers' tears and killmails. Yes, it gets destroyed, and I make up for the loss selling destroyers and battlecruisers I've been building for the last month and more. I usually end up ahead, and even if I don't, I've traded ISK for fun, which the way I see it, is the purpose of the game - I don't mine because I enjoy it (although I AM obsessive-compulsive); I mine so I have ISK to spend to have fun.
If it's not for you, suspend your account for the three weeks around the event: if there's enough of you (which I doubt) CCP will ultimately take notice; but remember that this is a game that caters mostly to sociopaths, and the idea that in EVE you can safely be such an annoyance that you force people to quit or suspend gaming will probably attract more and more failed schoolyard bullies and CCP will end up with a better cash flow thanks to your ragesuspend. Just sayin'.

Their time is better spent on Bottageddon.
Is there really a difference? At least as far as high sec ice fields are concerned.
You got me there for a moment. From my understanding, Hulkageddon is purposely targeting anyone in Hulks regardless bot or not. Bottageddon in my mind refers to specifically identifying a bot before killing it.
There is a difference in that sense.
Previous experience has shown us that if you blow up a bunch of macks or hulks in highsec you will kill more bots than stupid people.
And since there is no positive way to identify a macroer over say, a player that just doesn't take convoes... well....
Egg.

Because "player run tournaments" follow a format where you take your turn, scheme to cheat and/or play by someone else's "rules".
Hulkageddon, is pure sandbox fun, has no unnecessary rules on conduct, doesn't require a 3rd party to be "objective" for adjudication, and you don't have to listen to some pontificating git tell you what is a "farce" or not.
Harsh, ain't it? Boo-hoo.

Something that no-one has mentioned yet (and is kinda relevant to the OP) is that ALL industrial ships are targets this year, including haulers... meaning that anything from mission runners doing salvaging & courier missions to newbies running trade goods in an Iteron I to make their first few iskies will be a target - the reason for the ship being flown doesn't matter, only what type it is.
I'd say that this will be the last time that the event will be allowed to run as a result of that idiotic decision (expanding targets from mining ships to every industrial out there) - the forum rage when Jita is besieged by suicide gankers and newbies saying that they're quitting after being griefed for a week will force CCP to change the game somehow... maybe buffing Concord (again) or removing insurance for suicide attacks in empire.
It's the same story again & again - the greed & stupidity of the bottom feeder "PvP"ers ends up with their toys being taken away and them sitting on their own in low sec crying about how there's no target anymore... past greed led to the introduction of warp to 0, bigger gates, the overhauling of the probing system (harder to find mission runners) and haulers getting jump drives & cov ops cloaks - this one will most likely get insurance changed.

It's clear that you haven't got a clue what you're speaking about:
1) Stay at speed while mining? Do you think that a strip miner will still be in range of its target asteroid after 3 minutes of moving at even half speed? let me guess, your solution to this will be to target just 1 roid at a time... and waste 15 mins per hour constantly retargeting popped roids.
2) Pay attention to what? Spikes in local? Good luck doing that in busy systems with 50-60 people in local doing missions & ratting. It only takes 2-5 people to form a gank squad that can take out a few hulks.
3) Do you think the gankers are stupid enough to fly around in their gank ships from belt to belt, broadcasting that they're in the system? They'll use alts & scouts 50km away from the belt and use warp to 50 to drop straight in on top of the miner.
If you're going to force people to take part in your event and force them to play the game by your rules and playstyle, then don't insult them with stupid suggestions like these - would you like combat advice from a miner?

As someone who also mines when needed...hulkageddon does not bother me. I even find it entertaining. Last time I was in an ice belt and saw no less than 5 get popped at once...I almost fell outta my chair...
Ways (not guarantees...) to avoid being "geddon'd"...
1) Stay off the warp in. 2) Be aligned out as best as possible. 3) Fit for tank 4) Setup your ship scanner for short range (so you can see when a potential ganker is inbound) and watch your overview.
... and probably the most important...
5) Don't group up.
Suicide ganking is about cost vs reward. A lone Hulk/Mack is probably not worth the gank (unless the ganker is a sadistic bastard ) while 3 or 4 grouped together nicely in smart bomb range most definately are.
Also, save up enough ISK for quick replacement. For as with everything else in Eve, if you fly it long enough, you will eventually lose it. |
