Highly unlikely that you'll be able to stream videos from your computer to everyone else in your CQ. Neat idea, technologically difficult (and probably illegal as you likely don't have broadcasting rights on the videos). |

Seriously, little hacks like this opened to the community is a great thing. I might even convert a few to personalize the long hours I sit in the CQ. Now, if you can just let me open a SSH terminal session on the CQ:TV to my work server I can start doing some of my real work while sitting on my virtual couch in addition to sitting on my real office chair.

It. Is. Awesome.
Was aware that it could be done but had no desire to do something that might have been bad for the client.
Can we get some play/pause/next controls? We will be able to open a more standard format so that we can browse our own video library without having to pre-convert everything? It takes a shitload of time to convert 1 video i'll only watch once...
Just don't let this take resources away from FiS. I could really do with some comedy japanese-movie rapper dubbing while i'm cooling off. |

Ok, I have a question about "Streaming"...
Let's say, in theory, we were able to setup a streaming to CQ to share with all our buddies when we can go into each others' CQ...
Would displaying a specific video "in your home" with your "Friends" apply to a digital setting? Essentially, all the qualifications apply - you're not sharing it with 100's of people and you're partaking of it in the context of Private use.
Imagine streaming Netflix to the CQ and watching a movie with your mates? Interesting concept.
And... how about a modification to the Juke Box to allow us to play our videos on demand rather than waiting for it to cycle through? NOSTRO AURUM NON EST AURUM VULGI |

Just make it possible to display web sites on that thing and let us handle it from there. 3rd party developers would have a field day. Imagine live economic data from eve-central.. a customized subdomain to work with the small screen. Or what the guys at eve-kill could do with it.. or battleclinic.
First thing after logging in each time I'd turn the TV to the eve-kill channel and check for the latest kills in the constelation i'm currently in. Yep, I'd turn my CQ on for this. Watching silly videos on that tiny screen inside my screen would get old so fast I'm not even gonna bother. |

Please roll out the dev blogs that deal with stuff in space/spaceships.
Also, this isn't really a new feature, what would have been of more value is that you saw people wanting to do this so you enhance it by offering more than what we can do now. ie offering stream support so we can watch jita live, or an easy converter/filter so we don't have to automatically convert everything to bik. that would be innovative, and features those in the community would like that use this.

Video works fine, sound can be temperamental I have problems with the sound coming in hi-speed bursts, as far as I can tell with some quick google-fu it may well be a problem with the binkw32.dll file, unfortunately you can't replace it as it's checksummed by the client on start :(. My binked video sound works fine in the bink player but not in eve which is a bummer :( |

Just to add:
Rad tools will allow you to turn that video sequence into a windows screen saver.
I turned about a minute of HD video from the alliance tourney "Jita Cam" from a few years back into my screen saver at work.
Sort of like an aquarium screen saver, but with EVE ships.
BTW, when bored, I counted the different ships that were on screen during that minute, and there were over 30 different ship hulls.

Way to waste valueable man-hours... Now, you could have done something useful (as many have mentioned) as the station undock, or Jita-cam, or a feed from of your live-teams in action, but no... You do a half-arsed "do it yourself" thing, where you could have used the man-hours on spaceships instead. You know, make stuff work. You could have used the hours on FW, on the industrial-expansion, I don't know, maybe even sov-mechanics. You could have fixed CCP Soundwaves 0.0 nerf, so it actually was reasonable. You could have focused on balancing stuff, so the risk vs. reward you always talk about, actually came to mean something. You could have fixed PI, so that it came to be what you promised.
But no - you did a television, for the CQ, instead of the stuff that the veterans wants; you know, "the rabble". You could have made the game better for your loyal fanbase, but instead you made me a freekin' TV, somewhere in the game that I do not, and will never (unless forced) use... Talk about waste of resources...
No, this is not good news to me, at all. you wanna know about how many man hours this probably took the DEVS? I will say 3 for discussing with the legal department and ccp security team. another hour to write up this dev blog. so in total probably only 4 hours the devs were not involved in your priorities. 4 hours is not much. they took something that they could have filed off in the exploit category and wielded the mighty ban hammer but instead they decided to give us something to **** around with in the client. And if they did decide to close this it would require MORE man hours from the devs to code in measures to disable this kind of modding. As for the legal departments and security department's man hours involved its precisely their job to look into crap like this and the legal department could use something to do anyway. You should not forget that CCP does not make this game FOR YOU. Sure as a customer its your right to leave FEEDBACK not an embittered rant that does little to address the issues you bring up in your rant. Hell with ccp's development schedule i am surprised they make any progress towards the qued up back log of balances bugs and minor exploits. I would love it if they just took 6 months to do a bug fix and rebalance overhaul. but it comes down to which do you want: more FiS/WiS or a complete run through of the current backlog of bugs and exploits? if you want both at once you are stuck with the system we have now and you have to accept what they address at the moment. |

i seem to have fixed it by first converting the avi to bik without audio and then using Mix in Sound afterwards. At least for HTFU it worked but i still have to try it for the other files. HTFU plays fine now just 2 or 3 times there was a slight increase in audio speed for about half a second, dont know why though. |

I know it is not a FiS feature but it is darn innovative and opens up for a whole new meta profession in EVE. I see a lot of ISK changing hands to those capable of making good EVE related short movies. And it opens for creativity where the creativity is best located; at the players. That is what this sandbox is all about.
I hope to see some creative people grabbing this opportunity soon. Mr. Science & Trade Institute, EVE Online Lorebook-á |

I don't know if you are aware, but this one feature opens up so many doors (uhmmm... yeah.... not those doors).
You have effectively created a whole new content expansion with only this "minor" gesture. EVE just got richer for a market of immersion boosting content. Players building content for other players for fun and/or ISK, player made in-game commercials about space ships, corporation identity videos looping in the CQ, CQ video contests... the options are endless. Fantastic move, CCP!!!
... and, all you had to do is think outside of the box.

i see it as more of a "rather than ban people for what is basically an exploit and breach of a eula, we are instead going make it a feature"
eve is all about player created content and this is an extension of that, and at no point in that dev blog do ccp take credit for it, other than the whole not banning people and "fixing" it thing, they clearly state that players are responsible and let others that mgiht not have known about it know that it is possible.
im also guessing this dev blog came about as a result of a recent thread in gd askign for an official ccp stance on several possible exploits/rule violations, some of which have been around since at least 2007, and which included this "feature". its good to see them communicating more and actually supporting something that would usually be concidered an exploit and against the eula.
speacking of the eula, does this mean there will be an update to it so that modifying the vid screens contents is excluded from the "do not tamper with the client" clause? it would help remvoe some confusion, espedcially in a couple of years with this thread and dev blog are burried and would cut down on the number of petitions relating to this We Want Space Penguins! |

bink format you say. Would that be the 2nd definition?
Not too sure this is needed; But given what I suspect that it didn't take much effort given all the time in the station thing you spent that I suppose can't complain. Though who will be the first to watch xxx in there's and post First will be the main question I'm comming away from this.
Now if you were to add the ability to record ingame action like you can in TeamFotress2, then this would have alot more going for it. Is that something you plan on working on, or adding. Or is fraps an area you plan on leaving alone and it's just the likes of VLC that need to worry here :).
Either way, feature wise - who's it goona hurt with the flat screen TV, but be more interesting reading how people use it than the feature itself, currently.

But what if I would ask others to fill the void for me? Say that news blogs (EVEnews24 for example) made a video of the most recent news for us. And each time that there is an update, it is placed in that DIR automatically... Few things that could make this work;
- A volunteer making a news roll and converting it - Uploading it to server X - Tool that downloads stuff from server X - Puts the stuff in the said DIR (set by user) - Deletes the stuff out of the DIR on user preferred setting (once a day, week, etc)
This way I would have a relax place to watch the news, while trading or waiting for everyone's endless jumps to our op. |

This is awesome. Not game changing by any means and I really hope this isn't what they meant by big changes are coming but you have to give them props. They are the only company I know of save for flight simulator who is cool with you modifying their program and even shows you how to do it. That said I knew about this before and didn't do it for concerns about repercussions as well as to me playing a video of something else would detract from the environment of EVE. Maybe better EVE videos though. |

After reading the first paragraph of the dev blog, I was fully expecting the rest of it to describe how they banned the offender and then added a flat screen TV to the NEX store for the price of a real life flat screen TV.
I was pleasantly surprised to discover otherwise, but I'm still not renewing my subscription. |

I don't know if I did this correctly.
My game is on my M drive.
I dropped the bik's into:
C:\Users\%Username%\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\m_ccp_eve_tranquility\cache\CQScreenVideos
but all I get is sort of a "blank" screen. It looks like there may be a fog moving around the edges.
The default videos were playing before I dropped them in that folder. I restarted the game and now nothing is playing.

I got a video to work but the sound was slowed down slightly plus the sound/video had a slight skip or something to it occasionally.
I know nothing about A/V stuff but tried to convert YouTube stuff, supposedly either in flv/mp4 formats, to one of the formats that Bink can convert to bik but none of my attempts worked. I would get an error opening file message in Bink. |

They did that already. "Eve is real". Somebody's actually got their thinking caps on up there on the icey lands :-) And... Considering how smart and computer savvy many Eve players are, it continues to astound me how clueless and narrowminded they are. Do you really think this was a bug in the first place? The only bug is that some ppl found out before CCP were ready to release it. If you've ever coded a piece of software from the ground up, you know that functionality doesn't pop up randomly. tldr: It's been in the architecture all along. Now it's in the feature booklet.
Now they need a section for properly encoded BINK versions of those videos, thus saving people from having to fiddle with getting their own coversions right.
Just a thought.
As a related side note to people that have asked about it, I don't doubt that the abilty to stream to this scrreen may be in the cards (when time allows), but an "outside view" of the station you are in is a vastly different proposition than simply streaming other content. While that would be viewed by many to be the ultimate useful feature that could possibly be deveiopted for CQ, it would require a significant amount of dev time to accomplish. Still, it would be the ultimate tie in between WIS and FIS content. To kill the enemy and break their toys!
It's not so much a mission statement,-áit's more like a family motto. |

There's a small difference between showing youtube videos to your friends, writing a personal application, and selling a product like EVE with YouTube or Netflix. CCP NEEDs permission from Google and Netflix to stream the video. Possible, yes, but I'd much prefer my CQ load a couple BIKs off my hard drive than start streaming Netflix every time I dock. |

be sure you are including the audio when converting to bik. I am finding even having that check box marked doesn't always work with flv/mp4/etc files from YouTube so I am looking at TPB for avi versions (like the music videos on YouTube but on TPB in avi). Fortunately I found HQ versions of the files I want but they are in mkv so now I have to educate myself on finding an easy to use mkv to Bink usable files to convert to bik.

Myabe... Maybe not... its not like any other web browser needs permission to run youtube or netflix all the in game browser would need is the codex or html5 or what ever the IGB is missing to render youtube and netflix...
also i would like the ING when CQ is loaded to be the TV... basically i sit down on the couch load the TV it becomes my internet and takes up most of the screen...
IMO this would be the simple way to get multiple people to view the same video as you if they are in your CQ(when that is alloud)
though this is just my dream... and think it would be awesome to see but no rush on it... |

You must be new here. CCP can't even give us Amarr, Caldari, or Gallente quarters. They haven't given us the promised 5th T3 subsystem. FW is forgotten and unfinished. COSMOS is broken and unfinished. 0.0 is broken, lowsec is forgotten. Ships are horribly unbalanced and have been for years, and you think somebody will ever be able to visit your quarters? HAHA, I'll be shocked if it ever happens.
Even if they could, what's the point? Everyone's CQ looks exactly the same, and probably will forever. CCP has decided to sell the cosmetic stuff that will enable you to make your CQ unique in the NEX store, with their ludicrous prices and **** poor selection. Want to buy a new couch? That will cost you as much as a real couch. There's no variety in the stuff and the prices are beyond ridiculous. Incarna was a spectacular failure on so many levels and CCP has already stuck their head in the sand about it, left it as is, and moved on to different shiny promises that they'll either never deliver, or complete half way and then abandon.
For CQ (and WiS in general) to succeed, it has to be integrated to the rest of the game. NPCs should drop cosmetic items in addition to their current loot. You should get trophies from kills, players should be able to make clothes, furniture, etc. There should be artists devoting all of their time to creating more and more items to put on your toon and in your room, and they should completely remove the NEX store and Aurum. Wait, what am I thinking? This is CCP. They said they were going to revamp the art of all the ships starting with the Scorpion (which looks good by the way) and then abandoned it like they always do.
I just realized that it's more fun to get on these forums and ***** about CCP that it is to actually log in and play their game in which every feature set is either broken or half finished with a UI that would have made people recoil in horror in 1990. |

Conversion from mkv>xxxx>bik is a problem though unless I am doing it wrong. Also I can't seem to get mp4>bik right or something. Conversion either crashes RAD or just gives error opening file. |

I've wanted to do this for eons, I used to run a server that shuffled through every episode of Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K) 24-hours a day.
It added some very nice ambiance to the game, I had VLC running in a small, frameless window that was always on top, sitting in a corner of the Eve ui. Floating in space, watching other people stranded in space gets interesting, adding both to Eve and to MST.
Is there *any* chance that you could add a video player to the in-space GUI? Obviously it could be turned on and off, but if you let players create channels, and be genuinely creative with content, you'd get 10x the amount of goodwill you get from fashions...
Sure, we can play video in a browser or whatever while we're playing Eve, but having video content IN the game, while it's fullscreen, adds a very nice level of immersion. |
