They are not open targets... Concord will still act against people who shoot at the hulks in high sec. The point of the exercise, however, is to gank and destroy the hulks faster than Concord can react for fun and prizes. It's a calculated risk for fun :)
So fly extra safe. Cheers |

It is something players choose to do. They will take GCC (global) and lose their ships to attempting to blow up the mining ship. Generally speaking the mining ship is worth considerably more than the ships lost attacking it.
Best thing you can do to avoid getting popped is just be alert, monitor local, and try to stay in low-populated areas. Watch your D-scan at short range (4-5 AU) and start warping when you see lots of ships nearby.

Watch local like a hawk just like you were ninja mining in nullsec and you will survive the hulkageddon.

which is why I bolded the 'find me, in the middle of nowhere' part, I couldn't be bothered to go all the way to Tash-Murkon just to gank him, I didn't even bother to check how far deep into hi-sec that system is from the nearest low-sec.

I believe, M'lord, that you just stuck a 'kick me' sign on your ship with this thread.
For anyone not advertising themselves, it's pretty unlikely you will see anything but vast, full asteroid belts in most unpopulated systems. But just in case you go to powder your nose and a gang of nasties show up, you can certainly prepare your Hulk with enough HP that it would really take a concerted effort to blow you up.
I remember once coming back from a quick refreshment break and my miner was happily shooting rocks with a cloud of Concord ships and four destroyed Battleships floating around him.
Remember not to tank. Gank tank! You only need to last a few seconds before concord arrives. Shield booster, afk, cargo expanded Hulk drivers might as well stay home.
Tank for gank m'lord. Tank for gank.

Unfortunately, I don't believe that you are being given the full picture. First off, the Hulkagedden name is a bit misleading in that it seems to indicate that Hulks are the only target. The event did start off that way but not anymore. To confirm, on the 19th, any ship that might even be remotely construed as an industrial (or carebear) ship is a valid target for the purpose of Hulkagedden. Exhumers, barges, haulers, noctis, freighters, orcas, the lot.
As for your defence, find a nice station, dock, and stay there. In hi-sec itĘs not really practical to be docking up every time someone else enters local, and these gankĘs will be quite a concerted effort to pop you and your pod (did I mention pod kills gets extra points?)

freighters not so much, they are difficult to kill in high sec but not impossible , any exhumers, mining barges, orcas, any industral ships really.
hulkageddon was started to kill off bots, allways happens that some ppl are caught in the crossfire.
just dont put 10 macs next to an orca in an ice belt, its really quite a target

Well, the last I checked, you'd need a very large number of alpha BSs to pop a single Orca with a DCU II and reinforced bulkheads, plus some decent shield skills. The EHP go up faster than you'd think. Freighters are even more of a nightmare to take down. I guess someone would have to be autopiloting one of those beasts around highsec, with decent cargo to make it appealing as I doubt any large gang will sacrifice 20+ BSs to kill a freighter.
Not impossible, just improbable! :)
(The orca is more likely, but even still, it will take a hell of a lot of firepower to take that structure down before concord gets there!)
edit: spelling ftw!

I'd check the killboard for the past Hulkageddon's if I were you, there were several Orcas taken down last year that I know of. They are a tough nut to crack but HG participants are very eager to kit themselves out to take one down. ------------------------------------------------ Quafe is people! |

Think again.
Freighter kills in Niarja
On average one or two freighters a week die in that system.
Orcas aren't a problem.

There's no exact numbers afaik but last year I just mined on during Hulkageddon (silly me) and haven't seen a single ganker appear for the whole 8 or 9 days. I guess the more remote the system you're mining in, the less chance you'll be taken down.

You realize how many people it would take to bring down a freighter before concord pops them? You are talking about 160k or so hp's on freighter. I wanna see a vid of this :)

Those are likely freighters in a wardec situation, otherwise I highly doubt you will get 20+ bs's to sacrifice themselves, would be cool to witness though.

Not a problem at all to get that many people, if your corp is into that kind of thing.
Risk (or cost) vs Reward. If the Freighter's cargo is worth more than the value of the gank BSs, that freighter will pop. It's simple math.
(Don't think it's a one-off thing either ... they will have been tracking that freighter for several jumps, setting up the ambush)
Be careful what you fly.

Some maybe. Most aren't. Niarja is well known as a freighter gank spot as its the main route from Jita <-> Amarr and its a 0.5.
20 BSs aren't that expensive when you get back a large chunk of the isk (insurance) and 50% of the modules.
Don't kid yourself that this doesn't happen. It does.

People getting heartattacks from eating dog poo happens too. Doesn't mean it's common and people should go around being afraid of dogs.
Anyone flying around with a freighter without having considerable backup available is a fool. That is the truth.
