I'll keep this brief. Hardly anybody uses Defender missiles. The main reason is pretty straightforward; using Defenders reduces incoming missile damage at the cost of reducing your own damage. Fair enough, hence why they don't see a lot of use.
There's a couple of ways that have been suggested in this forum as to how to make Defenders worth using. Mine is this: What if there were drones that fired Defender missiles? Good idea? Worth using? Totally broken?
Discuss.

Replaces the issue with the exact same issue: you choose not to use your weapons in exchange for the odd chance that you might be able to reduce some small portion of the incoming damage.
In order for defenders to be useful, they must work when activated, and they need to be mid (or low) slot items. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

I use them all the time, they are quite good if used correctly.

There is no such thing as using it correctly, so long as it takes a dozen defenders to kill one torp. You fit it, you lose.

No. The need to stay as utility high slot items. You'd have to make them ****ing amazing to persuade ANYONE to trade out a low or a mid for them, and even then as an anti-missile mod most people will just ignore them anyway. Utility highs are much more common and a much more plausible place for them to be.
Personally, I think that they should be their own module, and should not take up a hardpoint. Then make them a general purpose point defence weapon, that will shoot at drones and missiles targeted at you. Thus, they have utility to all ship sizes and particularly they give drone defence for frigs.

actually it'd be pretty neat if Defenders fired AT hostile drones, saving you the time of having to target each one individually

They'd need to be about as useful as tracking disruptorsà

Utility highs are, but missile launch points are not. Yes, if they make them not use launchers, but rather be their own module, then maybe. As long as they're launcher-based, they will remain supremely useless and counter-productive. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

PRIME uses them to negate Torp and Cruise turrets on PoS's thats about it. And even then we swap them out once we have incapacitated the modules.

Simple if I do 100 dmg fitting a launcher to my ship... they should reduce the incoming dmg by more than that amount for me to equip them.

How about making defenders capable of shooting down missiles launched against allies? Then we could have a dedicated ship with the task of deflecting incoming missiles for a small fleet.

It's called a "smartbomb" and all drones MUST fly within smartbomb range to hit a target.

If... they worked like FoF's but against enemy missiles. Then you just turn the launcher on and they engage closest enemy missile. You could make dedicated defense ships then, vulture would be a good one.

And they need their own boat to work - probably either caldari or gallente? with huge number of high slots, but not enough CPU/PG to fit appropriate offensive launchers for the hull class. special boat would have a MASSIVE fitting bonus for defender launchers.... what about the, ummm, osprey? or maybe another logistics cruiser hull type ship, so: Osprey (Cald) Scythe (Minnie) Exquror (Gal) Augoror (Amarr, and I've spelt it wrong, I know) Or maybe 4 new hull designs, that can even use defender firing drones... Too OTT?

tbh if the idea has ever crossed your mind to use defenders, you should just get in a ship with utility highs and fit a smartbomb or 2.
Defenders are currently horrible and need to be re-done completely or removed from game imo. ------------------------------------------------
