I call it - Mining Tetris :)
There is a cycle to mining, we all know it, what I think would be better is if the cycles where longer but allowed you to "optimize" the distribution in the mining lasers collection chamber.
Think of it like a game of Tetris. As the cycle starts different sized and shaped rocks enter at the top. The view is three dimensional, after 5 second the chunk will simply release and fall down the center, there is a gravity effect that if it falls on one chuck it kinda rolls over and settles. If however you crab the rock and rotate it to fit it in somewhere. Once you release the rock another one instantly comes in regardless however long it took you. Once the chamber is full it empties and a new cycle starts. When I say full, I mean - the chunk of rock can't go anywhere, so the laser shuts off the collecting, and empties the chamber. In Tetris this would be game over.
The Good:- Active Miners will be able to jam pack their collection chamber quickly. This will have two effects, 1) Their'll have a large take per cycle because the chamber is optimized to squeeze as much in there as possible. 2) The cycle could be much shorter if they either got lucky or was sloppy and just placed chunks anywhere. The kicker here is, yeah they could shorten the cycle time, but they wouldn't have optimal capacity. While optimal capacity would take longer, you're getting more per load. So it should balance itself out. If you become REALLY good at it, you could get a full load in a short time.
The Bad:- By pure chance you could get chucks that simply don't go together, so you'll have holes in your chamber, it could lead, even though you're actively mining, to a less yield.
The Ugly:- Because This would pretty much cut the ******* off macro miners, there would be less availably on the market. Even if a macro managed to go the "Just click and release to get the shortest mining cycle possible" CCP could easily make it so the chunks appear in a different part of the top every time. That combined with the 3D aspect of the chamber, even if you had an UBER GOD LIKE Macro would try and rotate chunks to fit, they can only see the 2D version of the overlay, the human mind can visualize that 3rd dimension, and plop down the chunk in the right area.
The Nice:- It doesn't force people to "actively mine" you can if you enjoy, go out the belt, point you lasers and mine. Then catch up with friends on chat. You're haul per cycle will suffer, sure, but that doesn't stop you from doing a little AFK Veldspar Dreadnought Mining, yeah Chribba, I'm looking at you :)
The drawback:- Lots and LOTS of CCP Programing, but hey, Mining will be FUN instead of mind numbingly mundane!
