Hi, my friend was mining in a high sec area, jettisoning his stuff, then coming with a bestower to pick it all up. Some kid knew what he was doing, and told him he intened to steal his stuff, and did.
How can my friend kill him? He says there is no way, but I think it should be allowed!
My friends brother came in a frigate and is going to kill him, since he has a cruiser, and doesn't care about a frigate. Is this the only way for justice?

A: Youre not allowed to kill him. The developers seem to like ore thiefs. Basicly miners where never supposed to use jetcans for mining. CCP put in some stuff to pretect you from ore thiefs (Secure containers) but theyre pretty useless for various reasons.
B: Shooting the ore thief with a frigate wont do much. Assuming you can kill him you will lose security status and the ore thief will simply buy a new indy. 99 out every 100 ore thiefs are Alts, most of the time being used by people whose main accounts have more then enough money to buy a good number of new industrials. Their sole purpose of existing is ruining your day. (There are actually a few ore thiefs in this game who steal ore with their main character)
Within the next hours wannabe pirates will come along and flame you for complaining about this, ignore them ---------------------------

Edited by: MinorFreak on 30/01/2005 00:48:13 We prefer to call them, "waste-removal-specialists" If you have a sense of humor about it you'll understand.
It's a very cost effective way of making cash. The developers seem to think it's okay since they claim to have been ignorant of the implications of allowing jettisoned cargo, and they claim that they had no idea people would use it for THE most widely popular career in their game, in ways they claim weren't intended.
Basically, you're dealing with people who threaten to TAKE AWAY your ability to jetcan mine rather than deal with a much thornier issue: Player Ethics and Official Responses to Such.
*shrug* basically, by claiming to be ignorant they've washed their hands of dealing with any ethics issue.you've got two choices: don't bloody mine in Yulai or other highly trafficked sectors and...well, don't bloody mine in Yulai or other highly trafficked sectors oh, and get this: If you use the 'ore-thief's own tactics against them and make a 2nd account "alt" to gank them - you'll be the one banned for griefing. not them
They'll ban anyone's main account for using an alt repeatedly for ganking and...the punch line: only when they repeatedly delete and renew that alt character for the job. Wonderful sense of how MMOG developers deal with player ethics, eh? They're about as dumb as oxen. Think about it for a bit. Anyone with a grain of mental gray matter would create a NEW 3rd, 4th 6th 1000001st trial account than follow CCP's "griefer scripting"
basically, you're screwed 16 ways to sunday. ______________________ Best darned links ingame and out (backup) |

Okay,
I don't want to sound insensitive to your friend's issue. Frankly ore theives are vile scum who deserve what they get. But people can do it if you insist on mining into a jet can. The game has secure containers that you can park at a site to avoid this problem. Do secure containers work as well as jet cans? No. But they are there to stop ore theives if you use them.
It is just like warp core stabilizers. Frankly they are often a waste of a low slot that could be used for any number of other useful modules. But, despite this I always have one or two warp stabilizers on my ship so pirates can't knock out my warp when I am traveling through <=0.4 space.
My point is, yes, ore theives deserve to be frozen corpses floating in space. But they are always going to be out there. And, if you foolishly jet can mine and then leave to get your indi, there is only one person to blame for the loss of all your hard earned ore.
YOU!
Think smart, strategize and minimize your risk. This game gives you this opportunity. Act foolishly and get smacked for it. This game is all about intelligent strategy (that is what makes it great) so take each ore thief and each gate ganker as an opportunity to learn.

Use a 2nd account for hauling whilst you mine... Easy. You don't even have to pay for 'em! ;)
That way there's less chance they'll be able to steal it.

well,
i guess there will always be someone out there who has something to complain...or even to nearly start crying about something.
ore thieves are not that common, i've been playing eve for quite a while now, i never ran accross an ore thieve.
anyway, those ore thieves are dirty little suckers who need to be blown into space ;)
greets
