Probably not the most pressing subject to ever grace oope but I just had an itch to play a game of moo2 and found out it won't work in win7 even with compatability mode or the other normal tweaks. So off I went on a google walkabout and after some hours I found the solution.
First off you need to go to your system32 folder and make a copy of the dplayx.dll then rename the copy as dplay.dll and register it then reboot. After that you install the win95 version and can now play the game but it will have some pretty bad graphic corruption. So after a bit more googling I found that if you right click the desktop and select 'change resolution' and leave the window open then start the game it displays just fine with no corruption or other drawbacks.
So anyhoo enjoy the workaround if you have moo2 and win7 and and want to blast some antarens back to the stone age and be the hero of the galaxy.

I bought MoO 1 & 2 from gog.com, and just ran it. No problem whatsoever. |

Hmm I wonder if that copy from gog is modified somehow with the extra files you need to get it to run and display properly. Shouldn't be to hard to do I suppose.
Anyhoo my install from the original disk won't work unless I do that workaround.

DOSBOX!
MOO2 DOSBOX GUIDE
Runs better, more options in executing the game for sound/memory/graphics/etc you can also flag games (no housing, no orion, everyone starts w/ an ultrarich, extra race mod points and many other options"
Since I got MOO2 for my birthday roughly 15 years ago I have played hotseat games vs my friend on an almost weekly basis (barring a few years here and there for college and military).
Really dosbox is the only way to go. If you are a MOO lover, research all the options it opens up (and the patches available) and you will be glad you did.

Dosbox is nice for the really old dos games but moo2 is much better if you can get the orion95 version to run. Which this workaround lets you do if you have the original disk. (unless you like to do multiplayer which I could give a rats arse about)

Somehow I doubt they're the "unofficial" 1.40 version (DOS executable only), most likely they're just a slightly altered 1.31 version, the latest official one (which actually SHOULD work just fine on Win7, just not in windowed mode). If you play MoO2 with other people (and that's one of the best reasons to still play it), you have to play 1.40 just for the bugfixes. http://lordbrazen.blogspot.com/2005/01/moo2v140-patch-faq.html
I use some VPN software to get everybody playing on the same TCP/IP subnet mask + Dosbox with IPX/SPX support enabled (one player runs IPX/SPX server, rest run clients before running the game) + unofficial 1.40 version (DOS only)
For VPN, there are plenty of free options available (although some have limitations, especially speed or "network size" which can be painful), we don't play that much right now (among many other reasons related to RL issues cutting potential available time to near-zero anyway) because we don't really have a decent enough free and decently fast VPN setup, although I suppose THAT one could be skipped as long as the player running the DosBOX "IPX server" has a public (and preferably fixed) IP address as opposed to a tunneled one.
In dosbox.conf [ipx] # ipx -- Enable ipx over UDP/IP emulation. ipx=true
Then make some batch files for both the "IPX server" (you have to know its internal net
SERVER.bat:
ipxnet startserver moo2_140.exe /noscan /nowh /hugestart /goodstart /nosplint /planets=5 /picks=14 ipxnet stopserver
CLIENT.bat:
ipxnet connect 123.234.123.234 moo2_140.exe /noscan /nowh /hugestart /goodstart /nosplint /planets=5 /picks=14 ipxnet stopserver
Of course, replace 123.234.123.234 by whatever the IP of the guy running the IPX server is, be it real IP or VPNed IP or however you wish to do it. VPN provided some extra stability, we found using a real IP and dirrect connections to not always work or break down at random, and we almost never had that problem via VPN IPs.

I'm sure I read somewhere that changing the desktop colour to 16bit allows you to run some older games windowed, it's been a while so I might be wrong but I'm sure MoO was on the list.

More information please. Hamachi is the only one I have heard of, and that doesn't work for some games with picky network requirements.

We were using Hamachi too, because it's one of the more user-friendly ones. However, in spite of most of us having the same ISP (and P2P traffic being hella' fast between us, always), we kept getting tunneled Hamachi connections instead of direct connections. http://www.avinashtech.com/internet/15-best-free-vpn-for-secure-anonymous-surfing/ And lately, I was looking at free heavily P2P oriented VPN software, in particular this one: http://www.wippien.com/

God i loved this game, what a huge let down MoO3 was!
I used to be obsessed with getting an antarian(sp?) fleet, wait for them to invade and try and capture :D they had that annoying device that used to blow them up most of the time when boarding :(
Stella converter rocked :)
