For someone who wants to get heavy use out of their short range missiles systems (Rockets, Heavy Assualt, Torpedoes) what level do you train the two missile range skills.
So far I have them both at IV, but I'm curious to know if anybody thinks one or both of them should be raised to V. It doesn't appear that bombs require Bombardment V as a pre-req anymore, so it seems even less appealing to train.
...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

Torps more range a very nice to have so that you get the extra range to not have to move as much for to get in range. The 5's aren't onfg great (imo) on the bs but look to save time from not having to wait to close. If ninjya ratting in a sb (or pvp'ing in them), a few km's is a few km's to get distance from frigates or more time to bug out from the fleet you just ****ed off.
Rockets...thinking you would be fine at level 4 since you want to be web range to make them work well. My eft'ing shows me having a comfortable range at 4 if I did web range. Ymmv. My minny ac'd af's....if I run rockets well in range of guns. Non issue for me (can fly caldari and minny up to t2 cruisers....do prefer the minny frigs tbh).
Not really a ham person...like my hmls for flexibility. Can't help, maybe someone can.
Not 5'd myself (level 4 atm) but since I started a perc/will remap it will be on the list to take advantage of that remapped training cycle. PLanned 7=8 months for what I got to do...few more weeks of it not a deal breaker for me and can say its done lol.

I trained both to 5. I mostly use heavy missiles, and needed the extra range to hit distant Sleeper batteries. At level 4 I had to switch to T1 ammo to do that.

Train 'em to 5. You'll likely also want the implants for missile/torp range as well.
Tagging Serpentis at 38k with standard/Fury torps can be done, but not without some serious investment. _______________________________

Train both to 5. Also you max consider using range/speed implants.

The question is not IF you should train them to 5, but WHEN.
And that is a decision that you will have to make yourself.

Look at the total difference.
With both skills at 4, you get a 1.4 x 1.4 = 1.96x range mod
With both at 5 you get 1.5 x 1.5 = 2.25x range mod.
To me that seems like quite a big difference - almost a 15% range increase.

As Malcanis points out, they synergize really well.
Apart from the occasional rocket, I disdain short-range missile systems (HAM, torp), and I always have, but I was still pretty quick to train both range skillz to 5, and I've never regretted that.

One hears that torps dont always have to be short range weapons...

I've done POS shooting in a torp Raven before. It's one of the few situations where Rage torpedoes are really worth it. Although, you do honestly have to nose up to the bubble against a large tower to do it. ______________________________________________________ PVP is a question that has no one right answer but a lot of wrong ones. - Aelana Anais

A standard Torp Raven using regular T1 ammo is already equivalent to 1/7th of a Rev in siege mode. No need to use Rage with the extra cost on an activity that is typically not time sensitive anyway. My opinion anyway...
To the OP, rockets and HAMs don't get a huge boost out of the LvL 5 skills, and for the most part, the guided missiles (standard, heavy, cruise) are usually effective with Lvl 4 skills, since you already get good range/velocity. Torps on a Raven/Golem/Stealth Bomber are where the extra training time pays the best dividend. Now, you can make an argument that increased velocity decreases the delayed damage quotient, but given the time investment, you'll have to make a decision on your own about whether or not the gain is worth the training time, in the short run. In the long run, all missile support skills are worth the training time investment, but typically, getting them to Lvl 5 is only going to have a payoff with the upper tier weapons and ships. In my opinion, TNP V > GMP V > Velocity V > Time V.
