I know this has probably been debated before, but it is annoying enough to bring it up again.
A simple mechanism: if a player has been inactive (meaning no keyboard/mouse input) for the last 10 minutes (or 15, or 30 or whatever you deem appropriate) he/she should be automatically logged out of the game.
The amount of players (alts) in low/null sec sitting idle for hours in a station - or cloaked in space - is downright silly, adds nothing to the game - except for unnecessary server load and a mild annoyance factor for the active players. If someone has a real reason for being there, even be it a scouting alt, they will either take care keep him active, or log in and out as necessary. If not, just log them out - please.

Too bad I pay to be able to log in. Playing is optional!

Don't tell me how to play the game I pay for!

It is trivially to defeat. Set a heavy object on a key. AFK all day.

Plus, alts that were previously idle would now send a keepalive (using e.g. the heavy object) to stay online. This would result in an increase in traffic to the server from idle clients, not a decrease.

This would just benefit the bots who are monitoring local.
Sitting in stations or in space (cloaked or not) for long periods is part of this game. Your characters age states that you already know that.

I need more replies like that and hopefully CCP will actually take notice and do something about it.

Much cooler idea, I think it's the same way CCP get Zymurgist to post

And then go visit your shrink. Cause if you do that it probably means playing EVE has messed up your mind. No? :D. |

I totally agree, and while CCP fix that they should also sort out the non-covert ships too, if a ship has a cloak but isn't a covert ops then it should lose it's cloak after a few minutes!

with enough whines about AFK cloakers CCP is more likely to nerf local chat
nerfing local takes care of the AFK cloaker problem entirely and does a whole bunch of other things to improve quality of the game. A nerf to local is much more likely to happen than any nerf to AFK cloaking
so keep posting, help push CCP to take action on local

Actually, I wouldn't mind a local nerf at all (and I am saying it form a solo carebear perspective, having given it some thought - maybe not enough tho).
But it's a big change with significant gameplay implications. What I propose is a very simple solution to improve gameplay for many.
Finally - please keep bots out of this, this has marginal relevance to bots at best (unless we consider the AFK players botters - which will automatically happen when/if this is implemented :) Not that there's much difference between them as far as I am concerned anyway.

Edited by: sableye on 24/02/2011 01:12:50 it would certianly save some resources and they know this so there is reason they not introduced it in last 7 years so doubt they will change there mind. personally I am in 2 minds less reources used overall is good and also in past 've been know to get drunk and fall asleep at gates ect in 0.0 luckily never died to anything but npc's but it would help that situation but I also alt tab into eve alot to chat/watch you tube and if it kicked me out too many times I'd get mighly annoyed.

Oh please. If you are going to whine about AFK cloakers at least have the guts to post your little ill-constructed whine instead of being all stealthy about it. If people want to be logged in without conducting any business, let them. Just because it is a minor inconvenience to you doesn't mean that CCP should spend any sort of effort on changing it. Also, if the person is logged in without doing anything there will barely be any server load so you can shove that argument somewhere.
Also, for every player that finds it annoying I am sure there are an equal amount of people that don't give a **** or some that even values the ability to be able to be AFK without being logged out.

The presence of a person in local in a system where bots are active has no relevance? Okay.
Originally by: Funky Koval But it's a big change with significant gameplay implications. What I propose is a very simple solution to improve gameplay for many.
Why? What is it going to improve for you? At the moment I can see benefits for botters and negligible performance implications for other players. What's your sell in short, effective bullet points and not this marketing type BS you've been typing before?

I guess we won't see any of those people in this thread, correct?

Those people might show up ion force tho :).
Good post, overall. This thread needs more posts like this ^^.

It's simple really. I spend about 50% of my time in EVE doing low/null sec exploration. Having idle/cloaked people interferes with my ability to correctly assess risk vs reward of my activities.
I have absolutely no problem with PvP'ers and other players ACTIVELY interfering with my exploration/mission running or whatever it is I am doing. It's what EVE is all about. But they shouldn't be allowed to do so just by logging in and not playing the game.

Sorry dude, but both your posts utterly fail in the logic department (I'll let you figure out why).

That is why you have D-scan. If they move...uncloak...it's on D-scan. Business as usual in hostile territory, whats the problem?
