i am a very good hulk pilot. i've soloed lvl 3 missions in the hulk, been unsuccessfully ganked repeatedly, and even saved a buddy in a hurricane by shield repping him out of the hulk and then taking the c3 sleeper aggro, and then killing six sleeper cruisers with my t2 hammerheads and his help.
i want to get into lvl 4s, but i'm not crazy enough to do it in my hulk. is there any shield tanked ship that is not guristas that uses drones for primary damage and can do lvl 4s? i'm reluctant to deal with the double faction training.

Well you didn't mention if you were caldari or gallente trained. If your gallente trained, thats easy, dominix, ishtar, myrmidon, navy domi, and navy vexor are all fun drone boats that can run lvl 4s without issue. If your caldari trained, thats a bit more difficult, as there are no drone bonused caldari ships that i can think of capable of running lvl 4s.
I know you said you dont want to cross train for guristas faction ships, but i would urge you to take another look as a caldari pilot. For example, if you were to pick up the Gila, the only real cross-training you would need is gallente cruiser 4 for decent ship bonuses, assuming you have no gallente skills at all, its about a week of training. The drone skills, shield skills, and missile skills you already have, and its pathetically easy to tank lvl 4s in a Gila.
I'm sure people will say that drones are not the most efficient way to run lvl 4s, and they're right, but if you are caldari trained and are looking for a drone boat, i would re-consider the Guristas faction cruiser.

the only armor skills i've got are hull upgrades, which is not really armor.
i spent a long time making my shields great. i'd rather not do similar training to get gallente drone awesomeness, even though i'm great at the drones. i'd also rather not deal with the missiles for caldari, and hybrids are fail incarnate.
my laziness in my problem. is there any way i can be lazy and use shields and drones at the same time?

sure there is. The Ishtar, Myrmidon can be well shield tanked. Dominix can as well, although i'm not as sure how effective it is. The only problem really is that you don't get to use your midslots for omnidirectional tracking links, which make sentry drones very very amazing. Also when shield tanking the myrm and ishtar for missions, a passive tank seems to be the most popular choice. EC-P8R... You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. |

Training for a Drake would be the fastest route I think. You are no stranger to doing missions slowly, so level 4 will seem lightning fast to you in a Drake. The skill entry bar is very low.
I've done level 2 combat missions in a Hulk, as well as level 4 mining missions vs. frigates and cruisers, but I salute you for doing level 3! o7

Well personally the way I went was when I started playing I thought mining might be a decent way for a little easy income so I trained a second account into a Hulk. the buds I played with did the same. Then I read about the Orca and that was my next goal.
Got the pilot into the Orca and figured out that it was really nice to be able to drag a salvaging ship around behind me with a 70k tractor range.
Started doing this for a bit then decided that the Orca had plenty of tank to hang out in L4 missions if I kept a RR mod handy. so brought it in to add drone dps and make wreck ball while missioning.
Eventually I decided that the character in question had good drone skills and thought "gee this would be better with another Domi" and I trained him into a domi to run mission while I went and got into other kinds of trouble.
This character in question now has 7mil sp in drones and I'm currently doing a little leadership training before I start him on his final path into a carrier. He should be able to fly a Thanatos (or a Nyx for that matter) by the end of summer and actually be useful(PVP) in one around this time next year)
A Domi's great because it is extraordinarily flexible. plus with it's cavernous drone bay and bonus it can just kind of putter through damn near any L4 with very little trouble.
A dual LAR2 Domi is relatively quick train and a seriously beefy tank. Plus it's pretty damned good PVP boat.
it is also capable of putting on a very credible shield tank of any type.
It can be flown AFK (the king of AFK missioning) or actively and damned near match such stellar performers as the CNR.
Even better it performs very well with little or no gun skill skills. in fact many fly it with either no guns at all or a single civilian "aggro gun" and let drones do the work. Though you can also stick guns on it and really tear through stuff (it does have a gun damage bonus afterall)
That's what I did anyway :)

Grow up, we can't all play the way you think it should be done.
In any case Shield and Drone equals Gila or Rattlesnake. Requires Caldari and Gallente training though but with a shield and drone combo there is no better place to end up.
