EVE Players Guide On Mining
EVE Players Guide On Advanced Mining
The second guide is based on Halada's.
OK. Suppose you come right out of the tubes with your 5,000 ISK and want to mine to make some money. Here's what you can do in your first hour or so of playing the game to get started.
0) Begin Training The Mining Skill and run the Crash Course to learn how to play EVE. Note - that you can mine those asteroids in the Crash Course into a jet can, bookmark it and then come back and get it. Jet can mining in mission space is relatively safe but you can be robbed doing that in the belts. Jet Cans last 2 hours. If you're closing on two hours - you can jettison anything (such as a bookmark you can create in your People and Places tool), make a new jet can and put the contents of the old one into it. Label the jet can with the time you made it so you know how much time you have left.
1) Warp out to the belts and do Mine and Return until you've got about 20,000 ISK. Don't refine your ore - sell it as is.
2) Do a Leave Ship on your Rookie Ship.
3) Repackage your Rookie ship and then Assemble it. This will put a Rookie miner and weapon in your Items hangar - and fit your ship with new ones.
4) Open the fitting tool and remove the miner from the rookie ship and replace it with the gun from your items hangar.
5) Take your 20,000 ISK and buy a Mining Frigate and put the two Rookie miners you now have on it.
6) Go mine some more ore with your two miners.
7) When you have the money Buy the skills Drones/Drones and Drones/Scout Drones - this will give your rookie ship it's best weapon - a drone - and can be done is a very few minutes - it will also let you put a drone on your mining frigate (unless it is a Burst - in which case you want to train Caldari Frigate II and get a Badger instead).
8) Buy a couple of drones
Now - you have a combat ship (your rookie ship with two weapons and a drone or two) and a Miner - your mining frigate with two miners and a drone.
Now ... the Mission Space for the Crash Course will go away as soon as you leave it. But other mission space will persist until you turn the mission in. That means you can complete the mission then loot/salvage the wrecks and then mine any asteroids in it. You can however mine the Crash Course space as often as you like - by going to your help menu/tutorials/your first days/crash course.
Expanded Cargo Holds will let you haul more Ore. As you get more money - you can buy better miners than the two you got by repackaging your rookie ship. And ... OBTW ... you can manufacture rookie miners that way - and sell them ... just not for very much - so ... it's mostly not worth your time ... But - that will teach you how to place a Sell Order on the market instead of just selling to someone's buy order.
When you run your Career Agent Missions you will have asteroids in some of them:
Business first as you will get a free Industrial Mining Next Mining Frigate, Miners and Industrial Exploration - a few asteroids and time to improve your skills.
Now - the Combat set of missions has the best asteroids in it. So many that in one of them - you would be hard pressed to mine them all with a mining crew of several mining barges. So ... if you can at least get into a Mining Cruiser (not the Arbitrator) before you run this one ... you'll be able to harvest more of that ore.
Last you can do your Advanced Combat Agent.
When done - you'll have a destroyer you can fit with salvagers and tractor beams, a good combat frigate, at least a Mining Frigae if you haven't bought a mining cruiser and an industrial. Get another destroyer and use that for running your Level I missions.
You can then go run Level I missions - and if there are asteroids in them - loot/salvage/mine - then turn in the mission & pick up your ore at the bookmarked jet can.

Mining, particularly solo, is kind of a waste as a primary char, really. I recommend getting into a battleship and level 4 missions ASAP, as that will fund anything you want to do plus certain battleships can give the medium-range mining vessels a run for their money if you want to dabble in combing the belts (Rokh, Dominix, etc).
My two main characters stay self-sufficient in Plex's just on the income from level 4 missions, and rather than wasting the Plex on myself I will usually dump them into newbie miners and (get 2 months for the price of 1 with the buddy program) that just sit in a quiet belt or mission mine when I find a good patch of ore in my level 4 missions. So far I've used their ore to build one of every T1 ship in the game for every race, and am working on the tech 2 stuff now. If I wanted them to make me a profit, I probably could. It's a lot better using them as a fun little diversion while I mission than as my main character though.

Well you can't discuss taste I guess, It's also beyond my comprehension why people would want to pay money for staring at mining lasers. The time to fill your cargo just gets a bit longer when you level mining ships and in the end it's around a 15 minutes stare but basically it's always the same.

Here we bloody go - again. Next time someone asks about missions on the Q&A forum I think I'll spam that thread with messages about how utterly boring and repetetive missions are and that they shold do something else to have fun. Like PvP. Or yes, mining (however weird that is I find mining more fun than brain damaging, repetetive missions).
This, instead of just STFU because I have nothing to say about missions.

Yeah.
What I usually do - is to point out that TRADING is more lucrative than anything else. If you want to make MONEY - then TRADING - is where it's at.
But - if you like jumping to the commands of some NPC and having them run your life - oh then missions are just oh so neat.
"Run here! Run There! Blow this up! Fetch me stuff for my sister! Do This! Do That! What? You got sidetracked by RL and didn't get back to me in time? Well you have incurred my displeasure underling!"
If you want a Challenge - then PVP is where it's at. You're not slaughtering mindless NPC's that just keep coming to their doom - you're up against another brain that's very possibly better than yours. If you want some excitement - there's excitement.
I'd also point out that Mining is PVP. You've got other miners out there vying with you for the choice rocks. You've got other players out there looking to blow you up just because you're a miner. Do they have a Missiongeddon? No they don't.
Now ... for the more advanced players - ones who have taken advantage of this games capability to use more than one account at a time - Mining makes real use of that. Not with just the few accounts you can make useful running missions together but with as many damn accounts as you and your equipment can handle. Try running a mining op all by yourself and then come tell me it's just staring at the lasers. Yeah - it's a lot of work, organizing and managing all those ships by yourself but it is not mind numbing boredom - the way mission running can be. "No! NO! NOOOOOOO!!!! NOT THAT MISSION AGAIN!!!!!!"
And - money - if you've got a whole mining op going - you can really pull in the ISK.
Alternatively, mining can also be a nice, relaxing game if you don't have to many ships to manage. If you're in a mining corporation - you can just sit out in the belts with your buddies and bull**** on your fleet channel about football or chicks or movies or whatever enters your mind. And - you can do it drunk as a skunk ... assuming you're not managing to many ships ...
In any case - what mining is NOT - is jumping to the crack of some NPC's whip. Do you mission runners really enjoy having your game run for you by some NPC? Do you really enjoy being their lackey? 'Cause that's what you are.
What it really comes down to - is that some people don't like mining. Fine. Don't ****ing like it. I wish more people didn't like it as then I'd get a higher price for my ore.
But if someone comes on the New Citizens forum and asks a question about mining - don't just knee jerk blather on about how much YOU don't like it.
Now ... no ... I'm not going to go to the missions threads and start spamming them with how great mining is - and how much mission running sucks - and it does suck - I'm not going to do that because - mining is a PVP activity and I don't want the competition. But I'm also not going to lie to people who want to know about it and tell them it sucks just to keep them away.
Mission running is hard to get away from in this game as it's about the only way you can raise your standings with the NPC Corporations owning the stations you use so they don't charge you as much in fees. That and having my own personal little asteroid belts is the reason I run missions. And we've got Hulkageddon going on right now and since I really did have a LOT of missions I needed to run ... that's what I've been doing but last night I didn't. I played Planetside instead.

Go for a Retriever and have a nice mp3 library. I also find myself reading books and articles when I mine. I am going for the Hulk as once I'm competent with it I have a steady source of income that has no risk.

But keep in mind that inattentive miners frequently get exactly what they deserve. When you're flying a 4 ship team, you won't have much time to spare anyway. -------- Ace POB

Remember what I said about Mining & PVP?
How you behave depends on where you are. If you're in a 1.0 system you've no rats to worry about and a quick Concord Response.
Also if you're mining in mission space - in a quiet system with no Level IV Agents - you're chances of being scanned down are extremely slim - unless someone is specifically after YOU.
Have your D-SCan active checking for Combat Scanner Probes.
Stay aligned, keep the rocks out of your overview unless you are targeting a new one and with enemies only able to warp in at the beacon you're in better shape. Of course you've got cloaking ships that can still sneak up on you but they've got a little delay coming out of the cloak.
But yeah, there's no substitute for staying alert. You're biggest problem with that comes from virtually never being attacked.
Now ... I was mining mission space in a .6 system once and while servicing my other ships didn't notice that some rats in Punishers had shown up quite as soon as I might have. I'd been killing rats for hours but these guys got in and started attacking one of my Covetors before I could figure out (alt tabbing around) which ship they were attacking. He was into structure before he warped out - then the drones from the others quickly polished them off. So - you can have problems doing this. But they're much less dangerous if you stay in higher security areas where the rats are weaker.
Now if I'd had watch statements on all my ships like I should have - that might not have happened. Same thing if I'd had my drones on aggressive but I usually don't for other reasons. In fact, unless they're mining drones I usually don't have them out as I've heard that makes you easier to scan down. Although with several Covetors there and a hauler how much difference the drones would have made I'm not sure.
