Was just looking at the ingame map to check pilot activity while i was getting out of null sec. Then it came to me - is the Map of New Eden a Galaxy or a collection of Galaxies in a universe?
P.S Also if New Eden is just a Galaxy wouldn't it be awesome if sometime in the development of Eve we could use gates to warp to other Galaxies. We could have a galaxy similar size of New Eden but completely run by pirates, all having war with each other to control more space. Galaxy full of red systems.... *dreams*

It's a galaxy because these humans we play came from earth a long time ago through the EVE Gate. Read the back story. It can be found here

It is a small cluster of stars within a galaxy, on a map of the galaxy containing eve you would not even be able to see it, and if you could it would be a tiny dot. there are between 10^7-10^14 stars in a galaxy, so on an average sized galaxy eve would be around 0.001% of the total size |

I think it would be great if EVE would have been the size of a real galaxy. 100 million systems to explore, vast enormous space with noone around you. ___________________________________

This is EVE, nobody cares about your "personal bugbear".
A world is the extent of your reality. Maybe plus a little more beyond that.
On a personal note.... stupid hampsters! !

This. It's "the New Eden cluster". This wording is also included in the page Acac Sunflyier recommended. I'm tempted to quip that s/he should follow her/his own advice, but maybe s/he simply misunderstood the question. _____________________________

actually with wormhole space consisting of another 2499 star systems there is about the same amount of known space. So there is the eve cluster and then randomly but interconnected wormhole space overlapping that and one would think now emerging colonies in those wormhole systems. But ccp hasnt actually done any fan fiction for wormhole space colonies or what is on the planets yet. Sleepers control space but theres been no sign of them or long lost colonies planet side

Lol you know what that would mean? Current eve supscriber base would mean that you would rarely run into anyone in space then ;) Not to mention need to scale up eve cluster guite a bit to handle that many star systems. :P Hell, anyone could form their personal alliance and have personal empire of few thousands systems with no need to fight anyone about it :P

0.0 is still connected to high sec (eventually) since most people in 0.0 eventually go back to high sec for bried visits to buy things from trade hubs or other business... if not that then no doubt players will come from high sec into 0.0. Either way 0.0 is connected to high sec.
What i'm saying is what if there was a whole new galaxy same size as new eden, with JUST 0.0.

Why not? That would be friggin awesome Though they would have to make valuable resources very very scarce so there was something to fight about.

It's neither a Galaxy nor a Universe. It's a rather tiny star cluster. CCP adds stars to it from time to time - so all it is, is a very small star cluster in a galaxy made up of billions of stars and millions of star clusters which floats around in a galaxy which floats around in clusters of galaxies which float around in larger clusters of galaxies which float around in pools of dark matter which make up threads of the larger clusters of galaxies which make up the cosmos which makes up a small part of the overall universe. *sigh* we're so small.
Keep in mind - most real star clusters have hundreds of thousands if not millions of stars. To call Eden a Galaxy is to show how very little you know about real world gravitational physics. XTC - Qiwi |

Actually there is a game in development that will have a full size galaxy of 100-200m stars. It procedurally generates the stars as people go out and explore (like minecraft) so that the server doesn't have to sit for years to create it all. People will see each other in that game because there is always a need for specialized items so people will gather in trade hubs like Jita. I won't name it but you can find it by looking for procedurally generated universes.

Galaxy/Star Cluster, matters not to me... but just because there are jump gates to known worlds, and now worm holes to unknown systems, does not in fact count ALL the stars in space. There would be 100-400 million or billion more that are simply not charted, or too violent to navigate too. Try getting a good nav targeting solution on a binary or triple star system which by the way is a significant number in any Gal or Cluster. (grin)

Edited by: Jovan Geldon on 03/03/2011 01:59:28 The map only lists the inhabitable systems in New Eden. There are systems too worthless to bother building jumpgates to, and ones which are unsuitable for jumpgate construction altogether due to environmental factors; the ones we see are the only ones left over after the above two conditions are checked.
Or at least, that's my take on the matter.

This is true, however, we know how large radius the cluster has from jump drive distances. Using a jump range tool I estimate the radius of the New Eden cluster to be ~70 light-years. If this estimation is correct, New Eden seems to be a typical large-ish globular cluster. Globular clusters typically have a mass of some hundred thousands of solar masses, which means they have (very) roughly the same amount of stars. This in turn means that 1-5% of the stars in the cluster are currently inhabited (assuming 5000 Inhabited systems in New Eden).
What's interesting is that globular clusters, and especially the centres of globular clusters, are not very good places for planetary system formation due to the very high density of stars (up to 1000 per cubic parsec!). This will destabilize most planetary systems and cause general chaos. The strange layout of New Eden with places like Trace Cosmos, Divinity's Edge and Ginnungagap do not really match with the idea of a globular cluster either, not to mention the flat-ish system layout of New Eden.
Most of this is probably due to the Rule of Cool, though, a spherical, featureless glob of stars mostly without planets would be very boring.
