So I am new to Eve and before I bought my account I spent many hours on forums and youtube watching various aspects of the game.
My questions are these.
I like the idea of trading to provide Isk to keep my character running, is the entry level to trading very high or is it something you build over time.
Once buy and sell orders are done what's the best way to supplement Isk making and game play, Missions//Mining//R+D//Exploration ?
Is Caldari still the "chosen" race for things like mission running and skilling characters I have read that the skills have changed a few months ago and that's great is there any benefit to being a different race such as starting standings ?
Is it a good idea to buy a character from the Bazzar ? seems I can buy plex and trade that way or am I better off skilling up from the start to get better idea of what to do in the game ?
Lastly since I am new to the game can anyone point me in the direction of some "noob" friendly corps for trade that also dip into other things (I'm thinking mining or missions would supplement best but depends on replies)
Many thanks for the replies I receive and look forward to a long and productive Eve life ! |

Trading is a very competitive way of making ISK. There is no reason why you want to train players to compete with you. On top of that you need a lot of capital to make trading work. New players can't be trusted with 10s of billions of ISK. Esp. when their biggest concern seams to be their very own well being.

That is nice to hear. Don't forget that you can't by trust nor friendship.

All characters now start with the same stats. It doesn't really matter much which Faction you pick.
Depends on what you want to do for the Character. If you start new, you'll have no standings and very limited skills so you can shape your Character any way you want. I think that would be better. Later you could always start a second account and buy a specific type of character after learning the game.
After you start the game and complete the Tutorial and all of the missions for the Career Agents, you'll have a much better understanding of the game along with some basic experience to decide just exactly which career or careers you want to do.
Anyway, good luck and welcome to Eve.

i would strongly advise that you start your main character from scratch so you can learn the game properly, once you have more experiance you might consider making an alt acount and buying a character for it if you dont want to wait for it to skill up.
its often times very obvious when somone is using a character they purchased with vastly more skillpoints then any they have built up from scratch as they have no idea what they are realy doing with it. due to this you might find that a lot of people will look down at you if they see you in a nice ship and obviously have no idea how to fit or fly it.
as far as what race to chose it no longer realy matters as all the races now start with only a basic set of skills and you can easily cross train to use a rigate from another race in an hour or so.
and yes missions are one of the more popular ways to make isk due to it being a pretty steady income and as you train mainly combat skills for missio then its a chosen profesion of most pvpers due to the skills being useful for pvp as well.

1) The entry level for trading is very low - it's just that you can't do much - but you can get started. What you want to do is to set up a capital fund - that you only use for trading (like say - a certain percentage or absolute amount of your money that you will not spend on anything else). I got mine started by hauling. I put a character near the borders of several regions - noted those places where there were sell orders lower than the buy orders somewhere else. I would then go buy as much as I could of the sell orders, transport it to the place with the good buy orders - and sell it - THEN take my profits and go buy some more from that low sell order. I just went back and forth, buying a little more each trip until I was filling my industrial. Eventually I bought all of that sell order and the difference in price between it and the buy order got me my starting funds all in a few hours of hauling. The big thing about that is that you need to make sure that you're really going to be able to sell all the stuff you bought at a decent enough profit to make up for all the fees and taxes - and - that if the hot buy order is filled by someone else - that you can still do that through other buy orders.
There are advantages and disadvantages to posting sell orders and filling other people buy orders. If I had taken what I got and posted it as a sell order - I would have had my capital tied up in that stuff for a while. Certainly not the instant turn around I got that let me just go buy more. But - if you've got a lot of stuff and aren't trying to build your capital fund - then patience can let you get a good bit more for it.
For a Trader - R&D and PI are great. Both are very passive forms of production so you don't have to put that much work into them. For PI you need to do a little extractor management now and then - and for R&D - if you run missions for your agent - it will pretty much total the research points you get. This passive income frees up your time to do other things - like mining or mission running.
Exploration is kind of hit and miss. You go looking and you need to be ready to take advantage of whatever you find - but you may or may not find something that hasn't already been used up. Here - you've got to think about the amount of time you spend flying around looking for things. Being in a quieter region where you don't have as many other people doing it will help.
Now - for Missions - the big thing you want out of Missions - is standings - standings with the NPC Corporations where you do business can cut down on your fees. This also helps if you are an industrialist. You aren't going to make squat during your low level missions - but you will build standing. Higher Level Missions - especially Level IV's pay very well - but then you need to have the battleship to run them and there's a good bit of skilling that goes into that.
Mining will initially get you more money than low level missions but there's a transition about Level III where they even out and then you can make more running missions at Level IV than mining - if you're doing it by yourself. If you've got multiple accounts - then mining makes the best use of them.
The days of the min/maxer character types are gone. Pretty much everyone starts off with the same attributes and can remap them any way they want. Also - you can run missions with any race - some just have better ships for specific purposes but they can all do it.
Starting out with a Trader can be a good foundation for an EVE career as everyone has to sell. There aren't that many skills you need to train so you can get that done relatively quickly - then you can be running low level missions while you're training for your R&D and PI skills. After that you can run missions and mine if you want up until you get to running Level IV missions - but - if you do that - you'll be splitting your training along two lines. Here - multiple accounts again come in handy.

...
I just want to re-iterate this advice on purchasing characters.
If you are already a veteran player and want to buy a ready made character to perform some function - then that is your call. You should have enough in game experience to know what you are doing.
But - for a new person to just go out and try to buy their way into EVE with a lot of RL money buying and selling Plex and Characters - that is a really good way to waste a lot of money.
Skills are NOT as important as in game experience. Without in game experience - you won't know what to do with all the stuff you spent all that money on.
It's pretty much going to take you about the same amount of time to learn the game as anyone else starting out with a rookie ship and 5000 ISK. During the process of learning how to play the game - you can acquire all the skills and stuff you need - and learn to use it along the way. That and you won't have to pay a fortune to upgrade your clone.
The other thing is - that character may well come with a history that - being a new person - you don't realize how much you don't want. Even if they appear to have a decent security rating - they may have done something else in their past - that caused their owner to want to sell them to someone else ...
And lastly ... if someone realizes that you are a new person just trying to buy your way into the game (which they will figure out) - you will be held in contempt by a lot of the people who did it the hard way.

* For a skill-less starter character trade is the only viable option to make a lot of ISK. * Later on you can add income from PI and missions or whatever you do - as long as you do enough of it. * R+D used to be a goldmine but it hardly is anymore. * Exploration can get you decent valuable stuff but you'd want to do that in lowsec/nulsec as most highsec sites don't have great rewards.

* Not the chosen race but the chosen ships ;) All races start off with (almost) the same skills and attributes, race has no impact on your training. Gallente drone boats, Caldari Navy Ravens/Golems and Tengus and Vargurs are generally considered the recommended L4 mission ships. Of which the Caldari boats and Gallente drone ships are the easiest to train for. The Caldari ships are more allround though, especially the Tengu, which is absolutely marvellous.

I would actually recommend buying a character if you have the ISK; just be careful with the ships you fly and buy. If you still start with the tutorials and start doing L1 missions and find out how to fit and fly ships I think it may pay off very nicely, especially if you also find a helpful corporation.
In my experience - the rate of learning the game is far, far higher than the rate of training skills.
Welcome and good luck!

Ok many thanks people for the swift replies and advice.
I understand the issues with buying characters so I think I will pass on that for now and maybe look again if I ever decide to have a second account for missions.
If R+D really isn't that good I think that mining will be better matched with trade, reason I'm stuck on trade is all the reports I have read say its phenomenal Isk generation and I want a slice of that pie !
lastly trade + Mining or R+D what skills should I level first, I will have 300-600mil starting funds since I can get plex for implants skillbooks and such. If I go for mining its roughly 9 days to get into a retriever where as if I go R+D then training will always be in conflict unless I get many skills to say level 3. |

As most of the other questions are answered by above posters, just one thing about buying chars.
A lot about eve is about "reputation". Once it¦s ruined, it¦s ruined forever, as you won¦t be able to change the name, ever. Beside biomassing, the only way to get rid of him, is to sell him on the basar, to somebody who did¦nt investigate enough.
Findig out that your new char is hated by half of new eden for scamming, corp stealing or else can be harsh, and not knowing why getting shot over and over by various ppl (who don¦t know that this char was sold) will be a turn down in game experiance.
Just to warn you about.

I've not notice that R&D has fallen off that much ... *shrug* It's a passive income so it doesn't compare to mining. You're biggest problem with that, besides the cost of the skill - is running missions for that corporation so that you can talk to their R&D agents. Here - you're mission running skills will help.
Trade/Broker Relations and Trade/Accounting will cut your fees and are easy to do.
Your R&D skills are expensive.
Some of this stuff you're just going to have to look up for yourself and make decisions based on your priorities. So a show info on anything your interested in and look under prerequisites to see what skills are required - then look up those skills, see how much they cost and what rank they are. The higher the rank the longer they take to train. Also note that each level of a skill requires a lot more training than the level before it - which when multiplied by the rank level can lead to some Level V Skills taking a very long time to train. If what you want to do only requires Level I of some skill - even if it is a highly ranked skill - that's not that much - but if you need to train to Level V - that can really take a while.
