Originally by: Vladette Drakul For Nearside: No one, no matter what ship, skills, modules, whatever, is fast enough to lock up a ship that warps to 0 and immediately jumps. I repeat. No one.
Smartbombs don't need to lock, and you must fly through them to get to the gate.
Quote: For Farside, you've got either 15 or 30 seconds to decide what you are going to do. I can't remember which, but it's plenty of time. The timer doesn't start until the overview starts to populate, unless your computer is ancient or lag is particularly bad.
... or you are on a slow connection on the other side of the planet.
Quote: If your ship can align before the jump cloaking effect ends, you're good, unless you pick the wrong place to jump.
The jump cloak effect ends the moment you start to do anything. The animation of the cloak effect fading takes a few seconds, but your ship is visible, targetable and vulnerable the moment you start moving. There is no chance of aligning before you decloak, but there is a chance to align and warp out before you are locked.

Originally by: Brenaris Can't say that it's a problem I've particularly encountered. Been playing under two months, moved into low-sec when I'd finished the Sisters of Eve Epic Arc. Tried my hand at some PvP, wandered regularly back to high-sec for shopping, so flown Frigates, Cruisers and Industrials throughout low-sec and through high-sec to low-sec gates. Hit a gate camp twice, ran away successfully both times. Not that low-sec isn't (obviously) more dangerous, but hardly impossible to navigate.
Just stopping in to point out a rookie pilot that "gets" it and will likely enjoy this game very much and go far.
Luck to you Brenaris.

That's a good point, but what's you're exposure time going to be? What are the chances that you will run into a Smartbomb Rokh, for instance?

Another good point.
Thank you for finally posting a reasoned response to my message. I'll have to re-consider, but I would suggest that my suggestions will work in most cases.
What I left out is what I do between nearside and farside if I have a ship that can handle it.
Jump 10 to the gate and 'drift' in cloaked. This cuts the time farside camps have to react. Thy will probably know you're coming, but not when. I think I've been de-cloaked in a system where it mattered once. I made it through any way.
At 2500 meters the 'Jump' button will activate. At 2000 your speed will start increasing (Cheap cloaking devices) Jump when your speed starts to increase for best effect.
But, Mara, your response sounds kind of academic to me. Is it based on personal experience? Mine is. I'm not picking on you, I'd just like to know.

depends where you are. there are some well known (pirate)hubs, in which the local pirates use smartbombs. exposure time will be meaningless, if timed right. as long as you are within the AoE of the smartbomb, and the smartbomb is activated, you will get hit. considering a shuttle, noobship or capsules have limited EHP (Effective Hit Points), only a few of the possible 8 smartbombs need to hit (IE: timed correctly) to produce a wreck, or as many times is the case, a corpse.
But don't take my word for it, go out and find out for yourself.
Fly safe.

Logical consistency alert!
If you've never been in a system, you not only don't have a safe spot there but, according to your statement, you can't put one there.
So you've never left your rookie system?

The question was how to avoid gate camps. Not how to avoid gate camps the very first time I go into the system. Alts/scouts were already mentioned.
Do keep up.

It's not impossible to teach those who refuse to learn, or even consider new ideas based on merit alone, but it's a lot like trying to teach a pig to sing, IMHO.
It's a waste of your time and it apparently annoys the pig in this case.
