Hello, I am trying to setup my first planet.
I wanted to start in high Sec to start just so I can experiment and learn the ropes.
My first planet was Arant IV (Temperate), it was a total mess and totally unorganized and so far is a failure (I was attempting to make Industrial Explosives as per the PI player made guide) due to mass chaos.
My second planet is Arant VI (Gas) and I was going to make Condensates, I organized everything on paper, planned out supply routes... I scanned the planet got the resource areas, stuck my command center on the equator and 4 resource gatherers in the hot spots. I then built two Basic Processors and linked them to two of the gatherers... and at this point I ran out of power and wasn't able to continue with my plan... what am I doing wrong?
Here are my skills: Command Center Upgrades 4 Interplanetary Consolidation 3 Planetology 1 Remote Sensing 3

If by "resource gatherers" you mean Extractor Control Units (ECU), there's your main problem right there. They take a good bit of power by themselves. Depending on what I'm trying to build, I usually have two per planet with anywhere from 4 to 7 extractor heads. Also, watch your link length as the longer the links the bigger the power requirement, especially on gas planets because they are flippin' huge.

try placing the control and the extractors closer together .. the further they are away the more power then consume.

This.
You probably are reading a guide written before this January. Back then, an extractor was on it's own, and only used like 800mw. Now, just dropping an ECU which does nothing by itself costs 2700mw, and each node costs 550mw. This DOES potential make it cost less MW for a single resource type, but you are severely limited on the multi resource extraction.
The workaround for this is to simply extract one resource at a time, and switch resource extraction every few days. But the most "efficient" will still be a single resource type, tbh.
See this thread where I discuss this more somewhat, and also give a sorta example of a single planet p2 setup: http://www.eveonline.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=1475833&page=1#5

Did you upgrade your command centers to level 4?

Edited by: Soldarius on 02/03/2011 08:43:29 Yup, sounds like you are using an old guide.
Brief setup follows: Let us assume you have already surveyed the planet and have decided where to base your colony. It does not matter where you put your command center. It need not be linked to any part of the colony. But since the screen initially opens on your command center, it is useful to have it near the center of your colony.
- Drop your command center.
- Drop your launchpad at a location that is roughly centered between the two hotspots from which you wish to extract. For single planet operations, this will be your colony centerpiece.
- Drop your ECUs near to the hotspots from which you wish to extract. 2 for P2s
- Drop your basic processor units (2ea) right next to your launchpad, but off angle from the ECUs, so that they form a rough cross shape.
- Drop an advanced processor next to your launchpad, again off angle from the ECUs.
- Now connect you ECUs and processors to the launchpad with planetary links and hit submit.
- Upgrade your ECU to launchpad links by one level. You will need the extra capacity.
At this point, you have a PI colony. But it not running. You have to do a couple more steps to get things working. These steps need not be done in the exact order they are listed. But you do have to set your output schematics before you can route output products.
- Set all processor schematics.
- Set all processor output product routes to launchpad.
- Setup your extraction programs using the ECU interface. Don't forget to click "Start Program" or your programs will not run when you click submit later.
- Set your ECU output product routes to the launchpad.
- Route your raw product from the launchpad to the matching basic processors.
- Route your P1s from the launchpad to your advanced processor.
- Hit submit.
Your colony should now start extracting. In 2 hours, you should see your first load of P2 product in the launchpad storage.
From this point on, you will not need to check your PI colony until after the first program has completed to ensure you have a balanced load of raw materials being extracted. Having an imbalance will result in your storage capacity getting quickly consumed by excess of one or another P1 processed material. After a couple runs, you will also likely have to move your extractor heads to compensate for the depletion of your hotspots.

Excellent summary Soldarius!
Just a couple of notes:
Putting processor units off at an angle from ECU is mostly aesthetic - not a requirement. (Though it sorta helps to keep track of links)
ECU to launchpad link may need to be upgraded multiple times if you are in low/null
Also - when moving on to running my colony I always start the ECU's first. By the time the first cycle is completed the rest of the colony is then up and running and ready to receive the goods.

Thank you very much for the replies.
Using the info here I think I have two planets setup.
I think I was just trying to produce too advanced of a product from start to finish on a planet.
I have one planet making Polytextiles and bacteria, another making Test Samples or something like that... the cycle ends in 10 hours, hopefully it works out :)
Thank you!

OP: you may also want to get the planetology and adv planetology skills up. 4/4 is standard.
Not to hijack the thread, but taking the next step to "pure production" planets....?
Are these difficult to setup? If you're going from importing P0 -> P4, is it ideal to do this all on one planet since all materials are imported? Do these layouts look like little, tiny bugs with shortest possible links? I've done extraction->P2 (even P3 pre-patch), but that accomodated extractors.
Do you need Command Center Upgrades to 5 to use HT plants?
Just wondering how things change when creating a production planet?
TIA

I recommend the simple approach of one process per planet.
Example:
Planet 1 (ice): Aqueous Liquids (BIF)-> Water Planet 2 (storm): Ionic Solutions (BIF)-> Electrolytes Planet 3 (barren): Water + Electrolytes (AIF)-> Coolant
When you run out of water or electrolytes for planet 3, check the market prices. You can often buy more P1, convert it into coolant, and sell the P2 coolant for a (small) profit. Don't forget to factor in the import & export costs.
Routing is always: * Extractor -> Spaceport * Spaceport -> Processor, * Processor -> Spaceport

My setups, working like a charm
command senter 4 basic 2 advanced factorys 3 launchpads ( uses same power as storage but holds twice the m2) 2 extractors with launcpads linked no need for long links or placement near the other material. just put them on the hottest spot of the planet, if u dry it out just move it.
taking 2 raws wich mix together on every planet having an output of 10 units advanced material on every planet pr hr.
extract into launchpads export material import to factory launchpads. ok a little isk spent on import export but im running everything with no loss.

No it's easy, just find a small (to reduce link cost) solid (barren/temperate) planet near a trade hub. Only do P1/P2-> P4/P3 on one planet. Import/ export of P3 is a significant cost +10/15k per P4 compared to as P2. With margins of 50k-100k, that's a lot.
A seperate P1-P2 planet should be viable for some P2s. Quite a lot make a loss in prduction, just buy them off market; due to people in lowsec/0.0 making them due to compression. They're as compact as possible, due to link cost, picture here
Nope 4 will do, it does increase profit though.
No extraction (planetology is useless), hauling materials/products once a day, even with 2 launchpads of storage.
