I've been having trouble getting a tournament up and running on Chess.com, so I thought I'd make use of our forums and see if I can organize one with you lovely people.
Link to Tournament.
Tournament Details:
- I've set up a 16-player tournament (hopefully that size isn't too ambitious). If we can't get enough people to fill it up, I can open the tournament to the public, which will hopefully get us over the line.
- To register, you need to have a Chess.com account. You can create one for free. Free accounts are allowed to participate in one tournament at a time, so you can sign up and enter the tournament at no cost.
- Once you have created an account you should post here with your chess.com username. I'll invite you. I'm keeping the registration to invite-only so that, if possible, we can fill all 16 slots with capsuleers.
- All skill levels and ratings are welcome. I'm not actually much good myself (around 1000-1200 rating, I'd guess). This is training for me, and will probably be a bloody amusement sport for my opponents.
- This is a rated tournament. This should, ideally, raise the stakes a little for some of us, myself included!
- You have five days to make a move, not to play a game. Expect games to take as long as a month or more to complete. This is slow-paced correspondence chess with enough time each move to make a deep analysis. Only 50% will make it past the first round though, so each game is critical and worth taking your time on.
- Those five days are all you have: Time cannot be extended past that, and no "time out" is allowed, so be sure to make a move within those five days or you will effectively forfeit the game.
- You're playing for glory, honor, education, or fun...I can't spawn you Jovian Battleships for a trophy, sorry.
- Sign up is on a first come, first served basis.
Schedule:
Round One:
The 16 players are split into 4 groups of 4 players each. Players are automatically distributed according to their rating, so that groups will be relatively equal in terms of skill.
Within each group, each person plays everyone else twice; once as white and once as black. Games are played consecutively to help speed things up. This means that when you start the tournament, you will have six games to play against the other three people in your group.
Within each group, the two highest scores will progress.
Round Two:
The two remaining players within each group will play two games against each other. Once as black, once as white. The winner of those matches will be the group winner.
Semi-Final:
The group 1 winner will play two matches against the group 2 winner, and so on, for group 3 and 4. Once as white, once as black.
Final:
The winner of group 1&2 will face off against the winner of group 3&4 in a two-match final. Again, once as black, once as white.
See you across the board, I hope!

We're at 6/16 now. I'll give it another week or so, and if we're not full after that, I'll see about getting some other CCPers/public signups.

That's the last slots filled. \o/
I'll send out the last invites, then we just need those with active invites to register, and we are good to go. I think a 24hr heads up on tournament start from that point should be enough to alert everyone we're starting.

First come, first served. Let's get this show on the road.
To any who miss out: This, hopefully, won't be the last time I run one, so keep me as a friend on Chess.com and next time we're running one you'll get first invites.

Edited by: CCP Dropbear on 11/03/2011 18:46:56 Alrighty...
CCP Ginger Beard Guy has filled the last slot instead.
The tournament seems to have automatically begun once we hit 16/16, so we're off!
Good luck, and have fun!

That was a sly checkmate from Liang.
Nice game to watch. Fast and brutal.

I'll hit you up for a game in the meantime Ikki.
Also I realized that making this tournament rated works out well in another way. Because the groups are arranged by rating, by the time this tournament is over, everyone who participated will be rated much more accurately, so any future tournaments would be much better balanced from the start.

I think Estel Arador has me. Tried to push the offensive in my games and was met with rock solid defences. Now the attack is turning into a nightmare of overextension...
Actually, it gets frustrating, having to build up an attack so slowly against careful defence. I don't think I have the stamina or patience for that level of play just yet. You might have noticed that I just went for it, Estel...hehe.
Anyway, barring any discoveries in my analysis, you might see me fold shortly. Very well played, I must say. I think you and Vobard will make for a great round two showdown.

Grats, Vobard!
I kind of lapsed on this a bit at my end (let the Chess acct expire as well) as Incarna ramped up. Glad to see we finally got a result in the end. Kudos to Tibbs and Kharo for final showings too.
