I tried it and it was hella laggy, even with graphics turned down. Laggy + aim with mouse = Not good.

One word terrible.
Frequent cut scenes is annoying.

The story had potential to be interesting. The opening scene wasn't bad, but the voice acting felt....rushed. Some of the scenes felt rushed. Also fighter ships bouncing off asteroids in cutscenes should be a death sentence.
While the idea of a real point and shoot experience seemed enticing, in application (at least with a mouse) its hard to control.
I did not play my beta all the way through, what little I saw, the graphics had the potential to be amazing (I need a better gfx card), the storyline had the same potential. Perhaps when they release they'll refine the voice acting to not be quite so cheesy, or at least learn to properly dramatize situations. I'm just not sure how well control and firing is going to work in a game where shot leading and lag exist in the same realm.

imo story should never be a part of an MMO. The players should make the environment and the events, not the game itself. If you want story, go play a game with a single-player campaign. This is pretty much the only reason I've stayed with Eve for so long, since there aren't really any other MMO's (that are still active and have high populations anyway) that leave the story to the players entirely.

....but your stories blow. I mean, I understand why, none of you are writers, still...just sayin'.
IMO, I see no reason for MMO's to be lacking in a good background story.

If you didn't at least find the story of how Goonswarm essentially dismantled BoB somewhat intriguing, then I wonder if the issue is yours.
Also, I said nothing about background story, such as creating the setting such as New Eden being colonized by Earth through the Eve Gate, and then it crashing. What I'm talking about is when the game forces you to actively be part of a story. It's just annoying, and not really productive to MMO's.

Yes, the story of how one man was able to use game mechanics to cause BoB to drop sovereignty in all their systems is a thrilling tale.
Its a good lulzy event but nothing to be taken seriously.

Edited by: The Mattius on 12/03/2011 15:47:54 I have been playing BP in closed and now open beta.
They have made good progress, with regular patches and fixes. I think everyone has to try and remember that no MMO (Eve included) was a finished article in beta or launch for that matter.
I personally am finding it a great change of pace to Eve, and will almost certainly play both games as they compliment each other very well. That said, twitch flight is not everyones cup of tea, so try it and move on if its not what you are after.
They already released details of future expansions, with walking in stations probably the next big thing (much like Eve).
I really think a successful Black Prophecy MMO is exactly what Eve needs right now. Tough competition will focus CCP in their efforts to maintain Eve's market share.
Edit*

While i agree it was a game changing moment, and of great interest to the Eve community, i have to take issue with how Goonswarm brought down BOB. They did no such thing. A trusted director within BOB used (some might say questionable) game mechanics to kick all the corporations and disband the alliance. Goonswarm had nothing to do with it, other than claim the credit afterwards.

That wasn't really the point. Point is that it was an intriguing story of how it happened.
@ Koji, get over it. If you want a story so badly, go play a final fantasy game. MMO's suffer when they force stories on the player as if they're the ONLY ONE WHO CAN SAVE THE WORLD, or any story at all. An MMO should be based on the players and what they do and how they play, not some story that a dev thinks up and tries to force the players into.

I am certainly going to give it a try one of these days. And I can only wish that there were more good spaceship MMOs because CCP could really use some competition.

Played the closed beta a few months ago at a friend already, was laggy as hell and the whole scene was far from realistic, just to bright. Had a key for the closed beta a few weeks after that, but couldn't even make an account because you had to fill in your account details AND forum details, which were both different. Even after I resetted my password for my forum account it kept saying it was wrong. So I refused to try it out. Although, that friend is playing the open beta right now and he is killing everything that moves and ****s everybody with some friends, easy if you have the first corp in-game and if you are the highest player in-game anyway >.<

You are protecting your intention to buy the game? Justifying your decision? Every game makes good progress but if it sucks, it sucks.
No game had good launch? Not what I heard about Rift. Another game with good launch? Guild Wars.
BP = Shooter in space Eve = Strategy in space
They aren't even in the same genre. Comparing them is like comparing GTA4 to a racing sim. Both are on a planet (space) and both feature cars (spaceships) but that's it.
I love Freelancer 2, to death. But, alas I'm still waiting for an MMO that plays like it...

Really not quite sure what point you're trying to make here.
Quote: You are protecting your intention to buy the game?
Black Prophecy is a F2P game.

I'll just quote myself here:

I agree with you totally. Very different games and both with their merits
Quote: I love Freelancer 2, to death. But, alas I'm still waiting for an MMO that plays like it...
I think you are not alone in this. Maybe Infinity? But alas, i think we may never see an MMO game based around freelancer.
:shrugs:
