Well I got up at 5am to check the game out before heading to work. Didn't make it much further than where the demo took me but so far:
-graphics are buggy as hell. I have a gtx295 that is having some problems rendering I think. Regardless of whether i select dx9 or dx11(if available).. I do not have a dx11 card but it just seems a bit too jerky and jittery no matter the settings.
-Combat gameplay if great, a good step up from the first one. (Gathered this from the demo.)
-Unlockable items are many, with many a hoop to jump through to get the codes. Not bothering with half the stuff and the other half ended once we hit release date. Anyone have the inside track on unlock codes for items? Or is everything unique / good for one use?
Looks like EA screwed steam users once again. Let this be the final straw for anyone that wants to preorder anything EA in the future (I know the numbers of people that fall into that category are dwindling)... don't use steam.
Anyone have anything they would like to report? Technical problems they've run into? Vague non-spoiler tips? etc...

If you don't buy the game and have minimal moral qualms, you can have an almost zero-effort access to everything after a not very long period of waiting. Hooray for not buying the game at all and just waiting a couple of weeks ?

Wait a couple weeks? People were playing the game before it was unlocked online
I pirated the last Dragon Age (later bought a copy when I found I liked it).
I wish I had pirated this one. I do not see the reason for the preorder price when we get jerked around if we are steam customers, we have DLC options on the day of release (LOL!) .... they aren't giving me a whole lot of reasons to go the legit path next time around.
Did I buy the game or not? I have proof the money left my bank account.
Why do I have to play a game on facebook, order from a certain retailer, spin around 3 times throw salt over my shoulder and sing moon river and pay MORE money for release DLC in order to get a complete ****ing game on release?!?!?
Without listing all the reasons EA has given me to do this, I guarantee you I will pirate the next one. Again, not going into all the details but it seems like you give them $60 and wait 4 weeks, they thank you by kicking sand in your face.
Or, I can pirate it and send the message to an incompetent corporation that they suck. Sure, it means I'm a BAD PERSON but I can live with that. They want to give me the finger? Right back at em.
...Except mass effect 3, i need to buy that one so i have the matching 3rd box on the shelf to satiate my ocd.

Dragon Age should have been a "return to form" for Bioware as far as old school RPG style goes. Instead they got carried away by the success of Mass Effect and moved Dragon Age even further away from it's inspiration than it already was.
Classic case of the designers not having a clue about what kind of game they want to make.

I haven't managed to go past about 1/3 of Dragon Age 1 "basic" anyway (not to speak of any of the DLCs/expansionpacks/whatchamacallits), so I'm not exactly in any hurry to play Dragon Age 2. Mass Effect 3 though, now that's a different story. Sure, I liked Mass Effect 1 more than Mass Effect 2, but I'll play Mass Effect 3 either way. I also restarted (relatively recently) Mass Effect 1 (after getting all the DLCs and junk that I didn't have when I first finished it) to play though and go into Mass Effect 2 again with (relatively) fresh memories of my choices (also, this time, screw Paragon, I went Renegade most of the time... except when handling potential future allies).

I'm glad someone else feels the same way I do. What is the issue with Bioware? They used to be my favorite developer, and I would gobble up anything they threw out because I knew it was going to be absolutely stunning. Although, recently it feels as though Bioware is on a depressingly slow decline into obscurity. I can't help but think of Rare when I look at Bioware now. Am I alone in this regard?

Also, thanks for the viewpoints. In light of this, I probably won't bother with buying it until a couple of months from now when the ultimate edition is out and goes for like 30$. Even then, it'll be a meh moment, and I'll probably go for something different.

Preordered after I played the demo and found it to be a satisfactory demonstration of something I could pay 45 euros for. I'm very pleased that BioWare decided to return to the original concept of Dragon Age, before it became Origins and "the spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate", which I found it had none of. Well, I'm still playing it. Made it about 2 hours into kirkwall with my goody-two-shoes character, wanted to puke and started over with an bad guy instead
It's not pulling me in like I wanted it too, and despite all my complaints about the managment of the game and it's addons, the gameplay seems decent. So, I'm still on the fence on this one.
I've definetly like the combat more than the first so far (I also enjoyed me2 combat more than me1)...
I'm walking by an awful lot of people I can't believe I can't talk to. (really takes away from immersion, at least give them a 1-liner)
I'll post again when i've made it several hours into the game. While I think my complaints are justified so far... it's hard to give an opinion of the entire game until you've played a large portion of it.

He told you, the original concept was a successor to Baldur's Gate.
Origins, which you did not play, was more of a focus on a given story from the viewpoint of many different character's ORIGINS (you could choose from 6 distinctly different ways to start the game). This is apart from the pages we could go on discussing why it just didn't have that distinct D&D feeling to it (which to me IS the essence of Baldur's gate).

Apologies, someone once told me there was a dragon age that came out long before origins, and I can't find it, so I'm assuming this doesn't exist.
I never played Baldurs gate, so I have no idea what anyone talks about when they say the "successor to Baldur's Gate". All I know is that Dragon Age 1 was buggy, the gameplay was meh, and the story was meh meh to me. Does this sum up Dragon Age 2 also?

I was kinda thinking that when I wrote it
at least in eve I get to click things and press buttons! (oh and the whole "player interaction" bit does loads for a game)
I guess I would have like DAII if it was either more hack&slash or more rpgish/tactical, I felt like it took most of the worst parts of both and mashed em up. I dunno all the dialog that I saw was just pretty ****ty, and the options for replies were all pretty much the same.

Burn the heretic Disposable, non-recyclable and therefore consumable heatsinks ? Seriously ? And turning it from a tactical thing (almost KotOR-like when highest target aim snap was selected) to what is basically a glorified 3rd person shooter ? Bleah.
ME1 was a light RPG with some shooter elements tacked on. ME2 was a 3rd person shooter with a smattering of RPG elements tacked on.

I mean, seriously, you HAVE to play it, even today, when the graphics kinda' suck, because it's THAT AWESOME. You can get it for basically next to nothing, less than one month's EVE sub at GoG (Linkage). Heck, even Knights of the Old Republic was far more faithful to the d20 system than either ME or DA. _

Burn the heretic
.....even Knights of the Old Republic was far more faithful to the d20 system than either ME or DA.
I liked the change but not the weak storyline explanation for the newer 'ammo' system
I didn't mind ME being made into a (primarily) FPS because i think it works really well for that game. I got mind numbingly bored with Halflife/quake-ish games but ME kept me coming back.
As for this whole thing about if it's a good Baldur's Gate sequel... let's face it. As much as I love RPGs the D&D system really insists on itself (bleh i hate that term) especially in a computer game... that is to say sometimes the mechanics itself can be counterproductive to game advancement. In a computer game you have no DM that can waive or ignore elements of the system to ensure an enjoyable game. On a PC it can drive you crazy at times.
We ignore or forget some of the tediousness of a true d20 system especially in regard to pc renditions (omg ultima i loved to hate you).
Do I wish they stayed a bit more true to the D&D style? Yeah (especially how we are even limited on what gear our party members can fit).... there is a balance that can be struck and I think they erred a bit too far from the old d20 system
... but if it pans out by the end of the game (another pro sufficiently balances this con) and doesn't feel like a cut corner.. i can live with that.

I beat Dragon Age 2 after about 21 hours, and that's with at least 50% of the side quests completed. And at the end of it all, all I have to say is "meh."
It's not nearly as good as the original, and Bioware got so damn lazy with the various dungeons that I couldn't help but get annoyed every time I was in one; they were literally (and I mean literally) copied and pasted. Companions are shallow and doing their sidequests/talking to them isn't nearly as funny or enjoyable as the first.
One of the redeeming factors of the game is the awesome combat, and even that needs slight tweaking (I never used the overhead view in the first game except for placing AoE spells at a distance, and I miss being able to do that). It's fast paced, and companions use their tactics wisely so I don't have to worry about them too much. Another is the graphics, for those complaining: get better hardware. I have no problems running the game at it's intended detail, and the effects, shadows, and textures are just lovely.
At the end of it all, I don't regret buying it, and I'm about to start a new game to see what I missed; but it's a lack luster experience that doesn't live up to the expectations presented by the first game.
TL;DR The game is average, the story isn't as good as the first, neither is the companion interaction, dungeons are repetitive. Combat is good, so is graphics. People whining about graphic detail should "take a short breath on a long shaft" -Dwarf ingame. |
