Has anyone seen this movie? I saw it last night with some friends and despite the lack of an interesting story, it was still enjoyable. The main character was interesting, and I loved all of the ridiculous explosions. It turned out better than I thought it would.
Has anyone seen this film too?

Edited by: Vogue on 12/03/2011 19:50:48 It was an entertaining enough popcorn scifi film. The usual easy ebil aliens based around human fears to provide thoughtless self vilification.
Can you see the 'aliens' in this picture? QED
I am watching the 1972 Russian scifi film Solaris. It is very good and it gives an 'answer about the question of aliens, but not an answer to the question' - "This exploration of the unreliability of reality and the power of the human unconscious, this great examination of the limits of rationalism"

Which one is the one with the aliens that pull people into their ships with blue beams?
Why did they have to name two films the same thing :|

Skyline cost $10 million to make and made that money back in the opening weekend...
Hardly a failure at all.
This humongous pile of rubbish cost over $100 million, let alone what the marketing budget is that Sony must be throwing at it at to get people to watch it.
It was a waste of money to make it and will be a waste of money for anyone to spend money on watching it.

Movies like this you don't go to see for its meaningful contribution to your personal understanding of life the universe and everything. You go to see it to watch humanity burn with super nice special effects.
aka a disaster movie.
Anyways am going to see it tommorrow.

Not a FINANCIAL failure then. Sure, not quite the trainwreck-level failure that Friedberg+Seltzer movies (which, by the way, have ALSO been financial successes) have been for at least the past 5 years, but still a failure from a "worth paying to watch" perspective. Heck, it's probably on a list of "doubtful to be worth watching without having to pay" movies (as in, it comes on TV later on, do you watch it or do you just change the channel praying for something less crappy somewhere else). _

Edited by: Alotta Baggage on 13/03/2011 09:20:50 Ok, the movie was pretty awesome... that being said I have a few little gripes, being former USMC infantry they really stood out:
1. No Marine has ever said "Hoorah!" 2. The ACOG reticle doesn't look like that. 3. The M249 SAW does not sound like the M240 4. Marines don't stand up against their platoon sgt while still in a hot area because their brother died under his command in another firefight. 5. The M203 doesn't leave a smoke trail... honestly don't know where they got that idea from. 6. The M136 AT4 doesn't leave a smoke trail. 7. The laser on the laser designator is not visible spectrum. 8. C4 isn't incendiary and is way more powerful than the movie demonstrated (4 or 5 bricks detonated on a bus there wouldn't be any recognizable bus left) 9. The fuse on the M67 fragmentation grenade is 5 seconds, not 3 (most of the time, but never 2x in a row) 10. No missile flies slow enough to see the details on the missile body while it flies by. 11. If Michelle Rodriguez was ever next to me in a firefight I'd move down the line
Other than those distracting flaws the movie was pretty epic
*Edit: Didn't like Harvey Dent as a Marine Staff Sgt. (his butt chin is distracting )

Skyline wasn't that bad, I just hated the open ending of it, you still don't know if the aliens will be defeated or that they just blow up mankind. Same thing with Cloverfield, does that huge alien thing die or does it say, 'haailol your bombs are giving me a headache'
To bad this one gets in the cinemas at 7 april in The Netherlands, so I have to wait a full month before I can watch it in the cinema :(

Yeah ... knowing to much can ruin a lot of movies for you.
I remember watching the movie Platoon where they have this jungle fire fight and some guys are firing an M-60. I didn't catch it the first time but on some subsequent viewing - I noticed the blank ammunition rounds being fed into the weapon and ... suddenly I wasn't watching a Vietnam fire fight any more but a bunch of actors making a movie ...
Of course ... I'm not blaming them for using blank rounds ...
*shrug*
Collar tabs ...
Bruce Dern's hair in Coming Home. Nope - not a Marine.
I will give a movie points for trying though.
The Mk. III's in Enemy At The Gates.
The Abrams mock ups they made out of M41's in Courage Under Fire.
That Tiger mock up they've been using since Kelly's Hero's they made out of a T-34.
Band of Brothers had a bunch of other nice mock ups too. Stug III & a Jagdpanther mock up built on a T-55 chassis.
Some of that stuff is hard to come buy.
Probably not a coincidence but the Sci Fi Channel had a movie on tonight with almost the same title but it was a cheap Sci Fi Channel Original Production ... I guess I lasted about ten minutes ... then it looked like their special effects budget was running out and it was just half a dozen guys hiding in a hole ... so I ... did something else.
*shrug*

Oh FFS, I didn't realise she was in it. I am so sick to death of her crap 'acting' (acting the hardass, even though she would blow away in a breeze), playing the same char over and over again. Does she die early on in the movie? Please say it's so...

Makes it all the way to the end, though she's no a main character so no worries

They tried to put too much significance on a character's death the audience cares very little about, ie Dobby from the latest Harry Potter crapshoot. Difficult to be emotionally attached to a character you only see for 10 minutes, with minimal lines.

Havent seen it yet wife saved it for me but from the posts ill say this. 1 its a movie so its just a form of entertainment nothing more so i dont care about if its following RL in its portrail of wpns and effects or not. 2 Look at predator and the m134 mini the handheld mini is a fantasy gun it never existed in a handheld form but i still enjoyed the effects of it mowing things down. I just keep in mind that its Hollywood and that its just entertainment and sit back and enjoy the show.

No love for Super 8?
Spielberg, JJ Abrams, Area 51...c'mon!
Probably the only two people I'd trust right now with anything resembling Sci-Fi.
Everything seems to be poorly edited, written, produced, directed, acted, cannon-fodder.

After watching it I will have to rename the movie to Alien Corridor Shooter: Los Angeles.
Seriously, 90% of the movie was close up shaky cam footage.
I was really expecting something epic like massive battles and lots of pew pew.
But it ended up as just another urban war movie seen through the eyes of the grunt on the street.

I freely admit to downloading Skyline having missed it in the cinema. I watched the film the whole way through and the second the credits started I turned it off and deleted it from my hard drive. I didn't delete it because I'm worried about getting caught with downloaded material, but because I would be ashamed for anyone to find such a gigantic pile of poop on my PC.
Im holding out hope that Super 8, Battle: LA and Cowboys and Aliens can restore my heavily damaged love for sc-fi films, otherwise I'm going to need expensive therapy for the rest of my life.

When video games can make ú1 billion sell-through, it was a matter of time before those games influenced films.

They could turn it into a TV series. Guns, lasers, aliens - scifi fans would get into it like religous people enjoy bad church music.

You know, in my opinion, no Sci-Fi movie could ever stand out more than the original Stargate film that featured Kurt Russell and James Spader. That film jump started a very awesome storyline that catapulted the subsequent TV series to success. Mainly Stargate: SG-1 with Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Micheal Shanks, Christopher Judge and Don S. Davis (may he rest in peace). Originally, the series was suppose to die off by the end of the 3rd season, but later lasted into the 5th season and then finally closed off several years ago with the 10th season. There was something about the TV series that captivated the audience and thus kept it going. Was it Richard Dean Anderson (McGyver FTW!)? The sexy and smart Amanda Tapping? The voice of reason that is Micheal Shanks? The beefed up, but gentle and honorable Christoper Judge? Or the tenacity of Don S. Davis?
But of course, I'm talking about a TV series here in a thread about movies. I can see the difference here. But I managed to find that the least known sci-fi films tend to become well established yeas later as their fanbase grows (case in point: Tron).
