A while back I listened to drone bay or warp drive active(forgot which it was). They suggested that for getting around afk quickly that you put your mwd to the f1 spot and tape it down or put a weight on it.
It seems that no longer works. Was this an intentional change? Anyone know? -Cearain

The new method de jour (if you're American) is to hire an illegal immigrant to press it for you. It works fine for me, but your mileage may vary.

Using G15 keyboards for key grouping is permitted.
P.S. And it's a mighty fine keyboard, if I might add.

Spitfire,
I believe Hieronimus Rex was referencing the ability to make a keyboard macro which pulses a button, without player interaction.
The WoW reference is because in WoW it is illegal to control your character's change in movement without you pushing a button. That particular keyboard can be programmed to pulse the "jump" button* in WoW every so many seconds without interaction (after the first push.) This meant people would go AFK without the game kicking them off after so many minutes. I believe that this use (pulsing) of the keyboard is what Hieronimus Rex was wondering about.
*(or any other movement changing button.)

That is not allowed. To quote GM Lelouch:
Quote:
To make a long story short, automation of gameplay is not permitted; players must be manually issuing the commands to control their character(s) at all times.
Our stance on programs such as Synergy and hardware/software combination such as the G15 keyboard is that they can be legitimately used as long as gameplay isn't automated.

The best guideline to the automation question I've found is this: If the action initiated by the keyboard macro/shortcut/whatever takes longer than 5 seconds to execute, it's no longer a convenience. This is hardly official, but it seems reasonable: There's no benefit to automating something that short -- you'll have to sit back down in your chair again before it's done

CCP wont put in afk timers because they dont want anything to stop their PCU from growing, which essentially means the PCU is a fraud, but thats another subject =]

More because legit AFK gameplay mechanics exist in Eve. Autopilot, fleet boosting, sitting cloaked at a gate, etc, don't require that a player touch their controls to be useful applications of the client.

I think the afk logout timer comment was about WOW, it has such a timer and people get around it by use of a simple macro. And then get banned.

Isn't this very likely to be one of several similar changes that happened when the new keyboard/shortcut handling was introduced?
The client now process each key press/release (and mouse clicks) directly and independent instead of a combo (ie, the client reads "ctrl down, mouse left down, mouse left up, ctrl up, instead of ctrl-left click down/up).
Needed for to get all the new and adjustable shortcuts possible.
But a bit annoying when you are running two clients since you can't hold down ctrl and then click several targets in both windows in one sequence. You have to release ctrl, click in the other window, then press control again to continue targeting.
A somewhat qualified guess is that a similar thing happens when there's a session change of some kind, like a system jump.
And while it's annoying when stuff is changed that 'breaks' earlier practices I personally would call then new behaviour "working as intended".

If you think about it, that stupid "hey mechanics will never change so feel free to use a macro" rule is the reason botters get away with botting.

Using Synergy to clone mouse movements across multiple computers is allowed? interesting.

Synergy doesn't clone mouse movements, or it never used to anyway, it allows you to use one keyboard and mouse on multiple computers with their own monitors, like a KVM but over ethernet/wireless. ---------------------------------------------

It's handy to group modules that can't be grouped otherwise, like point+web or hardeners.

Yeah and it's the most amazingly awesome piece of software ever, really do love being able to KVM so quickly.
I have heard it can be configured to clone all mouse movements to other computers, basically the same function it does already but without the screen edge switch.

You're right Synergy is an awesome piece of software if you're running multiple machines.
I didn't know that it was possible to clone the mouse and keyboard clicks/movements so I'm going to look into that. I use it to dual-box sometimes, and cloning mouse/keyboard use would be so handy when running 2 clients in a fleet configuration. I think we need more clarificaton from CCP on if that is a legitimate use of Synergy or not ---------------------------------------------

Also there's the fact that being AFK on the server doesn't really affect server performance (unless you are in Jita, or a major fleet fight). EVE was designed so that there are very few resources needed to "maintain" a logged in status. I recall that some ISPs actually would automatically disconnect EVE players who go AFK because the network connection wouldn't show any activity and the ISP would time it out. ----------
