The new apple MAC Pro laptop with sandy bridge etc seems to be better spec then most PCs at a good price. Was wondering if anyone say in 2011 have problems running MAC eve client say running two accounts or connecting the laptop to larger highter resolution screen. the second query is whether anyone has successfully install Windows 7 completely without using Boot Camp. Was wondering if EVE client for windows work fine on the MAc Pro hardware.

That is a very good computer, top that off they just came out with the updates for it so now is the time to buy. You can do the bootcamp thing for it and use windows 7, but from experience, they run about the same. On another note, I do advise getting windows 7 if you plan on playing many other games, because most games aren't made for Mac. Just make sure you back your windows 7 up often.

It good to hear news on the apple mac. Pity it is not possible to running windows 7 completely on the Mac Pro. i seen Apple showing Eve on one of their pictures. I sort like the hardware spec because it is light to carry around but then i dont like being a Bad Apple. I check the whispers thanks

The "Mac Pro" is the desktop
the "Macbook Pro" is a laptop
The Macbook pro will run eve fine. Mine is from 2006, and although is getting long in the tooth, can run 2 clients pretty easily.
The Mac Pro on the other hand is a friggin BEAST, and can and does run Windows 7 flawlessly, except for the 2006 version, which is not able to run it.

Thank you for the feedback, it is MacBook Pro i was after, mainly it is lighter then all the laptops of equivalent specs. As EVE client for MAC runs fine that is good news. I can install windows 7 i suppose it will not run as fast since it is an Apple, afraid eve is the only game I have time for nowadays. as it can handle two client another plus. Pity that there is no laptop PC that can match it. The screen is still 1920x1200 as well all the laptops have dropped to 1080 beciase of HD standards.

I'm currently running a Windows 7 PC in a Parallels virtual machine on a 27" iMac with core i7 and 16GB Ram, and the windows ratings for this virtual machine are higher than my state of the art Dell desktop (and it runs faster and starts up faster). I can thoroughly recommend both Macs and Parallels if you need to run Windows.

I have a 2008 Mac Pro dual quad 2.8GHZ, 12 GB ram, and 3 video card (5770, 4870 (flashed 1GB pc version) and a 3870) with 5 monitors 30" x2 and 23" x3
Prior to Incarna, I could run 10 clients all day long and would barely even have the fans turn on, although the graphics cards fans would be going ape****, they don't make any noise from inside the case.
After Incarna, ****!!!!
They moved the preferences file, which is OK for a single client and my machine is rock solid, but the multi client instructions work, until you start a 3rd client, then some weird **** happens. I can't run more than 4 reliably now. I have 3 bug reports in and an email to my CCP contact that i have used in the past for multi client, multi monitor talks. I have not received any confirmation back either either and it has been over a week for bug reports and only a few days on the email.
I am not totally sure what is going on, but I do know what is currently in TQ client is massively ****ed. They have admitted to me that I am outside of what they designed the Mac client to do, however they acknowledge the fact they know a lot of people run that many clients and I think they are trying to figure out how to do it, but that takes time.
At this point, I am waiting on a return email and hopefully at least some affirmation that they are working on a solution. Once I get that I will decide which way to go.
I have thought about buying Win7 (Shudders at thought) but in the end, will prolly give up and go back to Starcraft or possible WoW before I do that. I will support the people who support me with my RL money.

I am beginning to see a pattern in this MAC business. Perhaps CCP has to consider the Client for PC as a priority, every patch there will be issues arising that their test cannot simulate the entire live system, so client for mac becomes a secondary issue and given time, they will get client modified to running seamlessy on the MAC. This is the problem, CCP will sort this out but not straight away. So every time there is another patch release and the whole vicious cycle repeats itself.
Apple specs is good, the question do eve have a long term solution MAC Pro users e.g. the same priority? At beginning of my request, I wanted to replace the entire OS with Windows 7. I was think of this a complete solution. But if the Apple client works seamlessly then it will be fine stay with the OS. If not well use Windows 7 on the MBP or follow common view use a PC. Somehow I dont think the Mac Eve client be given equal priority. I really like to have both clients treated equaly but reality tells me its PC first as Eve issues affects a much larger population of eve players. I believe Apple client was offered to get the MAC users as an option.
with technology moving forward perhaps CCP should come up with a Client that is platform independent or perhaps this is not technological possible. This will be an interesting project for CCP to merge the two Clients into one rather as a major patch rather then giving us the opportunity for our Avatar to wear clothing or wear cosmetics.

CCP only maintains ONE client. The Windows client. What we know as the "mac client" is in fact the same client that windows users use, with the .exe file and all. But it has several extra files that are provided by Cider. Cider is, to put it simply, a non-microsoft implementation of windows itself, except it runs in usermode and calls into native OsX APIs to access the hardware (the real windows runs in kernel mode and accesses the hardware directly).
Developing a multiplatform client is possible. It has always been. The problem is that the graphical engine (and that's the most important part of the client) would have to be re-engineered almost from scratch to build upon OpenGL instead of DirectX. DirectX is a proprietary graphics API developed by Microsoft for windows only. OpenGL is a standard specification with several implementations (on Windows the most important implementation is from Microsoft).
For CCP developing a multiplatform client means trowing away several years of development. --- I don't know! I don't know why I did it, I don't know why I enjoyed it, and I don't know why I'll do it again! Bart Simpson. |

To add on to Da Go
The original Diablo and the original Starcraft were the last titles from Blizzard not released simultaneously for Mac/PC. That was in the late 90's, maybe early 2000's. Now, their development is based on 2 clients, the Mac warcraft client actually has more features than the PC client due solely to Open GL being superior to directx. But decisions on how to implement X is made before any code is written, so it doesn't cause problems later. To write a Native Mac client at this point would be a HUGE undertaking, however, i think if it isn't started soon, the PC client and DirectX 11 will start to be too much of a challenge for cider to keep up with.

I was not sure, thanks for confirming that the EVE client running on MAC is a Windows client which is running on a windows kind of emulator of a sort. So the best way forward is to turn the Apple MAC into a PC, use boot camp or buy a PC. Will Windows using boot camp be running as a native OS?

If you run windows via bootcamp, the only thing that is emulated is the BIOS. The rest is native and you should see speeds you would expect from a comparable windows machine (ie Fast)
