Having to leave the comfort of the good ol us of a and have to move to a developing nation. Leave tomorrow mornings and am freaking out. Lived in the comfort here my entire life, and now having to give up everything I know sucks.
I wil have to stay there for at least 4 years, anybody got some words of encouragement? Or been in a similar situation? I know I'm gonna be fine, but dammit I can't help but worry =(

People in "developing nations" are generally the happiest of all people in the world, while those in western countries are the most depressed. Going for almost 4 years without the constant inane fearmongerish blabber of even the most benign US television station will radically raise your morale too. You will find that you spend very little money and get a lot of entertainment out of it, so the bank account increase side-effect will also be a nice plus. Besides, if you're lucky, you'll also find a local woman that's NOT a completely entitled douchebaggy personality gen-X/Y-er (whatever fits your age preference), so before you know it, you might find yourself having started a family and pondering not ever going back to the USA. Considering how things are developing there, that's not even such a bad thing.
In other words, this completely horrible (to you right now change) might be the best thing that ever happened to you.
I guess it would strongly depend on what country you're talking about though. There might be... issues. _

Depends where in Brazil. Spo Paulo or Rio are one one end of the scale, mostly rural regions are on the exact opposite end. http://www.gringoes.com/forum/default.asp?C=5 This forum comes up quite often in searches about "outsiders" living in Brazil or quality of life there, if you haven't seen it yet, take a peek.

Relax...don't buy any weed from anyone trying to sell you some, they will more than likely be a setup by the local police to bust an American, they do that a lot down there. Otherwise, you'll probably have a great time, the rest of the world outside the US and UK is pretty laid back, it's a much slower pace.
My sister taught english down in um one of those South American countries, as long as you don't drink the water you're good :P She made the mistake of drinking the water and was laid up for a couple weeks :P - - [SERVICE] Corp Standings For POS anchoring

OMG, Brazilian beaches are veritable death traps!
Jeez OP. Man the fnck up and grow a pair! Use some common sense and stop behaving like such an entitled ¦merican tourist.
If you¦re sacred of the drinking water, order yourself a Belkin gravity fed water filter. In the meantime just fricken boil it. Brazil DOES have internet and overseas shipping.

Brazil isnÆt bad, youÆll just need to avoid the slums and you should be okay. I have several friends that live there and love it, mostly in the Sao Palo area. Just exercise some street smarts and common sense (i.e. donÆt wear flashy jewelry, clothing and use your iPhone 4 non-stop), and pay attention to your surroundings and youÆll be just fine. The food is great down there and wine is top notch. Try to visit Argentina and Chile sometime, they are both beautiful countries with great food and wine and beautiful women.
Btw, I would barely consider it developing, now if you were going to Bolivia or Columbia, that might be different storyà
GL and try to have some fun.

I'd give the same advice as I would to any American leaving the USA: don't tell anyone you're American and try not to talk too loudly in case someone recognises your accent. If they do start looking at you funny just pretend you're Canadian. You should be fine as long as you heed that advice.

You can do industry stuff in Eve even if your connection is really lousy. When you come back to the U.S. after 4 years, you'll have zillitons of ISK.
When I lived in East Africa (was there for 2 years), I did missions in a perma-tanked CNR, too.

Brazil is a developing country... LOL!
Another example of an isolationist-minded westerner (I'm being nice here...) who is starting to realize that the world doesn't end at Uncle Sam's borders. American map of the world But seriously... don't drink the water and don't breathe the air! Oh wait... that's what they tell you when you go to L.A.
Just kidding! Ya gotta love the americans... if you don't they'll bomb your country!

Stop worrying about that which you cannot control.
The world is a big place - it's full of people who laugh at the same things you do, cry at the same things you do and have slept under the same stars you have since they were born.
Stop looking at the world and people in it in terms of what is different and start looking at it from what you have in common.
You will find you have more in common with people than you can ever realise - embrace it, and this adventure, with open arms and open eyes.
You are lucky, very lucky, to have this opportunity.
Boa viagem e que o melhor do seu passado seja o pior do seu futuro.
