Is plex likely to take a dive if the new background bot detection is successful?

They were about to dive anyway thanks to the fact they're no longer upwards speculated for purposes of "PLEX for FanFest Pass". Couple that with the panic of expecting an additional dive thanks to what you just said, and you get a self-fulfilling prophecy. _

Saw the session I believe you are referring to on EVE Fanfest streaming.
I think it will affect far more than PLEX... but due to their gradual approach, the market adjustment, although large, will be spread over a decent time period.
It will be a very interesting next year for the EVE economy!

I'm not sure I buy your guy's conclusion that less botting means lower prices for plex.
It could, but the devil would be in the details and because there are offsets .... depending on how bottting activity is skewed, less botting could conceivably raise plex prices.
Factors as I see them:
Down: Extra accounts that are active because botting is possilbe removed = less demand for plexs which as you guys suggest a downward vector on plex prices.
Down: Over all deflation that might result from less Isk entering the game via botting bounties
Down: To the extent that botters are supplying the RMT if less isk is available to RMT a larger percentage of players looking to by isk will purchase GTCs and convert them to plex increasing the supply of plex coming to market.
I agree those are significant
Yet first, there are floors to plex prices:
The cheaper plex are the more legitimate players with no RMT ambition will ad additional alt accounts.
The actual price of a good is determined by the incremental buyer. IĘd argue that speculative buyers of plex to create a 5 th 6th 7th or 8th account for things like Character Sales, Datacore accounts, or Research Characters already are the incremental buyer.
Botters make so much isk a month, that the difference between 300 million and 450 million isk wasnĘt determining the extra account or not decision.. I believe it was the ōhow much can we get away with before we create more risk for the first accounts than the next account is worth?ö question for them. Issues of IP address connections, NIC cards and maybe most importantly, safely delivering isk without detection and demand they have from paying customers.
The people starting accounts for profit reasons can safely scale quite a bit larger. Even if the datacore angle goes away, the character sales angle can take up the slack with greater volume until that market is saturated.
The number of players who might enter the character creation business has greatly increased with the ability to transfer players with plex based fees . IĘd never have considered it for 20$ a pop but its looking more attractive as a future option with lower plex pricesą. The lower the plex price too, the lower sp a character makes sense. You have both increased plex used in transfer fees and increased active accounts goes downąaccentuating the support factor.
(this is already turning into a huge wall of text so IĘll break off here)

I want to know WTH will happen to mineral prices if the bots start to disappear?
Surely thats gotta be the biggest impacted sector of the game?

its pretty complex....
... less materials entering the game but the same amount getting blown up is going to meen someone else is going to need to start making them or people will start flying ships with less materials to get blown up... that might not mean cheaper ships but a value driven shift to types of ships real players can more efficiently source the mats for...
... a bit higher value for some mats might really tilt a salvage or just rat/mission more for bounties type decision

Was really after Akita T's opinion on the matter. Had a small number of plex I was using for game time as needed. Have now sold them off and will buy up again if the price drops.

At this point it's pretty clear what PLEXes are going to do, the graph is almost guiding your hands.

Actually, players disappearing beats that. There's absolutely no reason to continue playing this game as it is when there are better options out there.

Perhaps PLEX prices are being held high by people buying and donating them to the current PLEX for Good drive.
I'm sure they'll start falling soon.

You can! borrow items (such as plex) rather than isk. Repay items.
All you need is to know someone with some X laying around. I've done this myself a couple times.
I'm not sure how to do it in an instutionalized way without massive losses though.

Edited by: Steve Thomas on 31/03/2011 18:27:21 Meh your going to have to convince Dr Enyo that people short selling is a good thing given how easy it is to drive prices up or down.
and then listen to him try to keep it under 4 hours as he explains in excrutiating detail exactly why that would be bad from both an econimic and game mechanic pov.
edit
oh and hope he does not have dry erase markers and whiteboards handy too help him ilustrate his point .end of line.
