I find that Planetology is all but useless due to how PI now works. Even though I move my Extractor Heads to the hotspots, it clearly shows that my total yield for the duration will be lower than if I place the head on another spot, not marked as a "hotspot" in the heat grid.
I have Planetology 5 and Adv Planetology 5, you'd expect it to help, but doesn't. It's quite puzzling...and annoying. Anyone have some advice to help me out here? |

I think so.
I have an alt with no planetology skills and my main with lvl 3. The alt is just as good at identifying hot spots.
When you are moving/placing your extractor heads, it should show you an accurate reading, not an estimate. The estimate should only be when you are doing the initial scan where you adjust the rainbow slider.

nah, I have 5/5 on my main and 4/4 on my alt;
My main gets more mats and sees brighter hotspots; my alt would need a lot of head re-positioning which just gets old after a while; therefore my alt gets less mats then my main.
5/5 is worth it; but only if you pi in low/0.0/WH space.

Yeah, I'm in a 0.1 system, so it's as good as it gets without null access. It just bothers me that the actual hotspot center ISN'T the highest yield. It's very unintuitive. Sure, it's close by, but with 5/5 I want it to be damned perfect.

I noticed that the amounts are different after I hit submit. Maybe that's uncertainty which can be reduced by training those skills. I've not checked that. [None] |

the amounts u get with 5/5 when u hit submit are pretty much bang on, this is the only way u can say, work out where gives the biggest spike in 2.5 hours for example

It doesn't matter what the estimate is before you hit the submit button, its what you actually get after you hit submit that matters.
I have one alt with 4/3 and one with 3/0 for the skills.
They both "saw" roughly the same pattern on the scan, but the hot spots were much more likely to actually be hotspots on my 4/3 toon. There were several times that I would cluster the extraction on the "hot spots" for both toons on the same planet and the one with 4/3 would get 20k to 30k per 15 minute cycle on a 1 day total time, where the one with 3/0 would get 5k-10k, not because the Hot Spot was worse, but because that is not where the hot spot really was.
I now have all my toons to 4/3 and seldom miss a hot spot that bad. Still dont always get the high returns it says I will, but am not completely missing either.

Was it not said that 1h cycles are not accurate and 14day are almost 100% on 5/5 skils. Read it all here: Link and here: Link and this one to: Link

Touches my heart to see my work is being linked =).
Yeah PI is screwy is the only thing I could come up with. I buy mission loot in bulk at above buy order prices! (sinq laison) |

With 5/5 skill, if you are seeing the expected yield increase as you move heads off the hotspot, it means that you're going to deplete the hotspot to the point where it is a cold pit on your scan by the end of the cycle.

I can't speak for other people, but personally I play PI for fun rather than profit. Oh, I make profit, but when I break it down on my spreadsheets, that profit is really from buying low and selling high, not from the PI production itself. A PI factory planet just provides me a quota of scrounging and scrambling I have to do every day.

Phew... I thought I was going nuts too after clicking 'submit' as well... Guess I'll try cranking up the skills more...
