Anyone who was able to attended the round table at fanfest today on the Mac Client with Transgaming, please let us know how it went and what Transgaming / CCP had to say about the state of the Mac Client and the future.

Summary
Transgaming are happy with client performance as it is atm, but acknowledge that systems (Macbook pro's) aged 3+ will begin to have performance issues especially around the new Character Creation tool.
They are happy with Mac client performance as compared to windows client performance.
Transgaming think the client could do better however.
They report 'changes' that are coming that should improve overall performance.
The CCP Dev reported about 3-4% of tranquility log-ins were Mac client under OSx, and that this was sustainable as regards long term client support.
When asked directly, the question of Incarna support, as regards current client performance with the new character creation tool, was a little more evasive, but was suggested that if it didn't work at all on Mac, client release would be delayed, however if poor performance a work-around may be offered.
Oh, and watch out for proper dual display support and more resolutions.
These are general notes, and there were specific issues discussed which will no doubt be raised soon.

Thanks very much for posting up the main points. Kinda interesting to read, makes me feel a little concerned about incarna performance.

Was their any mention of the constant crashes without warning or error on the Mac? -- Frog blast the vent core! |

There was some mumbling about getting their (custom) crash reporter working properly again. I didn't get time to ask about why they're not using CrashCatcher.
I have to admit that even I was shocked about the difference that some people reported between running EVE on Mac OS X vs Windows 7 on the same hardware. I was thinking it was in the order of 10%, but other people there reported it was closer to 300%. Shame on me :\
Sadly, the TG guy who did all the talking was mostly expressing motherhood and CYA statements, and the guys from TG were expert at making a simple "yes" or "no" waffle out to a couple of minutes - even the tech geek.
Guess they were scared by the level of reaction from the Chicken Littles on the forums anytime stuff happens.

THIS! Performance is poor, but not the main problem. Multi-Monitor support and stability are much more pressing problems. Stability is very poor.

I'm running this on a standard (non pro) macbook. It chugged with 2GB but flies after a 4GB upgrade.
However .... from time to time, the client just dies for no apparent reason. I don't think it's a memory leak as there's no performance degradation prior to dropping out. More like it hits an exception (guess)
That aside, it is great to play it on the macbook. FPS and graphics are excellent.

I'd partially disagree.
(1) My 2-and-a-bit year old MB Pro (using the hi-performance graphics card) generally manages 20 FPS, but drops to about 8 FPS if it encounters a nebula and I'm using high quality shaders.
(2) Character creator is almost unusable with high quality shaders, and has frequent graphics errors (notably with hair) if I use low quality shaders.

Anyone who disagrees that performance of the Mac client is poor hasn't played the game with the Windows client on the same hardware.

I know I get a extremely noticeable bump in performance and overall 'snappiness' in the UI booting into Windows on my mid-2007 24" 2.8GHz iMac. Likewise every single transgaming wrappered game in existence. Not to mention the stability improvements from booting into Windows... -- Frog blast the vent core! |

errr .. I thought this was a discussion around the Mac version, not a creaming session over Windows performance.
