The simple of the idea: Every item of significant mass has a range around it where warp drives can not be enabled (MWDs excluded.)
The why: For any who have played it, this idea is explicitly borrowed from Sins of a Solar Empire. The way it works out is pretty intuitive. A ship has to be outside and able to "see" their warp destination without going through a portion of the well in order to start warping. In SoaSE, warp engines take a few seconds to charge and are independent of ship speed. I'd prefer if Eve did it that way too, but the basis of this post would be enough to dynamically change how combat plays out.
Take for example the iHub. Currently, a fleet can warp right into the perfect range, align, unload, and warp out. It's an ingenious tactic and since humans don't tend to use suboptimal strategies, that's how the majority of iHub fights end up like this between equally opposed fleets. The other outcomes are when overwhelming force on either side dictates the outcome.
Now, if the iHub has a gravity well of say...150km. Position in the gravity well becomes immensely important. Point of entry matters. Where the enemy is set up matters. As it is, the game can be boiled down to small points connected by warp lines. A "gravity well" would make any big object an "area" to play in instead of point to point. -More Pewpew, Less QQ- |

Two real problems:
1. MWDs would now basically become required on everything, since you're never going to be able to warp to 0 (if I'm reading your proposal right). 1a) Freighters. 2. I don't particularly fancy a 200km crawl every time I want to jump. Or dock. --Vel

Pretty nice idea. So it's basically warp bubble that doesn't suck, only prohibits warping off if you are inside of it's area. But I would only use it in specified places and call it defense bubble or something like that. Gates and iHubs comes first to mind. If sov holding alliance wants them, they can put upgrade that enables them on the system. Different upgrades for the gates and for the iHub. Maybe levels for range too.

Playing around with the well size handles number 2. I think having it so you can warp deeper into the gravity well at the cost of knowing you can't warp out instantly would be a fair compromise. IE, you can warp in to about 15k out, but you need to clear out to 30k to warp out.
It is definitely an inconveniencing thing, but the intent behind it is to make it so people spend more time in actual space where they are vulnerable, as opposed to the relative safety of wtz.
As for 1, it is a drastic change so I imagine some modules would need rebalancing. This applies to freighters, as well, since higher end freighters could gain skills to avoid as much space time as possible, but the lower end freighters need to bring friends or suffer the vulnerability. -More Pewpew, Less QQ- |
