Ok, saying all football players are stupid was my bad, as there are times when football players need vision and intellect to succeed.
However, describing soccer as bunch of players running around chaotically tells that you know literally nothing about the game other than its game where you kick a ball.
As someone who played soccer for a very long time and coached(well highschool, and amateur level) soccer, the individual intellect is crucial in a soccer player. No matter how fast, agile, or strong you are, you will never be a good soccer player if you can't think in a bigger picture.
I never said people were running around randomly. They have their jobs and positions in order to cover the field. I just think soccer is as boring as watching grass grow because there's just no imagination to the sport, but baseball can be equally boring. The difference is there is real, tangible strategy in baseball; just like the article said, it's a turn-based RPG. Baseball, however, is usually more fun to play than watch.
My point is that most people understand how soccer works; it's not very difficult to understand. You'll get the occasional American who's a drooling chest-beater, wailing on about how much better gridiron is, but I'm not that guy. However, while most Americans know the game of soccer, almost NO ONE ELSE in the rest of the world knows anything about baseball or gridiron football and they love to flame people who don't like soccer and go on and on about how superior it is as a sport, when it's really a simplistic game that really just relies on stamina. Strategy is there but only slightly, and imagination is out the door.

Because there's no imagination in soccer aside from deciding how to dive or which injury to fake? Kidding...
There is little strategy in soccer aside from playing aggressively or defensively. There is no point strategy. Games are allowed to end in a tie, culminating in a 90 minute waste of time. Yet it is by far the most popular sport in the world, played by nearly a billion people. Again, WoW is the most popular MMO out there but I don't wanna play it because it's dull, repetitive, and a waste of time. I feel the same about soccer. However, I've played just about every sport besides cricket because I was curious and wanted to give it a try. That's where the curiosity comes into it.
Imagination comes into other sports because it most definitely doesn't enter soccer. An unorthodox play in football can lead to victory. See: punt fake/field goal fake/reverse/onside kick. In baseball, it's much more evident (if you can stay awake long enough). I've already mentioned the scenario in another post, so just refer to that one. There are a number of ways to get the job done, but how will you do it? In soccer, it's all real-time, but usually nothing happens. Only the impressive goals make soccer really exciting and imaginative, and there's only one way to get the job done...and it's usually luck. The point system is completely unimaginative, as I said, and the game can end in a tie unless it's the championship...then they just line the ball up in front of the goal and let each team have a number of tries to make a goal. That's like shooting fish in a barrel.
Yes, this is why you need to learn more about other things before criticizing them. Yes, goals and stuff are fun to watch, but even games that end up 0:0 have so many thing that make the game interesting.
For people who are not so into the tactics side of soccer may think its all luck. if you watch the game at a stadium(not TV, because you only see one portion of the field at a time), professional level, the game is a lot more about tactics.
There are some games that are decided by players that shine individually with frequent show of creativity and skill, but most of the time its all about how the coach evaluates the strength and weakness of the teams, and the tactics to lead his own team to victory. Player intellect and creativity comes into play here as stupid players cannot follow the constant change on the field(in real time) and fit into the bigger picture.
If you can see a soccer game and see how the coaches are fielding their teams and still think the sport is boring and is based on luck, its your loss.
Also, if you want to see how having a single point per goal system adds to the dynamic aspect of the game, watch Champions league 2006 finals Liverpool vs. AC Milan.

I've been to a few pro soccer games and I cheered when they made a goal just because I was so happy it broke up the monotony. I see soccer games all the time since I live in Europe and I've yet to see the same level of strategy that is found in other sports. That's all I'm saying.

Well, its probably not as data-based as baseball, but it is there and its quite interesting when you start seeing them during the game because the players and coaches have to adapt to the changes the opposing team makes in real time.
Anyway, I never thought I would talk about soccer in the eve forums.

The only thing I see this thread proving is how little class sports fanatics have.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world because you can play it with a rolled up t-shirt. Every slum in the 3rd world comes pre-equipped for a fut-bol match.
Baseball bats require at least basic industry and access to tools to manufacture. Last time I checked there were a few semi-significant Nations playing other than the Stars and Bars. (Japan?)
Is one better than the other? That's up to personal choice.
My vote is with hockey. Speed, skill, violence...what more could you want?

Football is the most popular sport in the world because it wakes up emotions of the people. When a worldcup takes place people everywhere in the world (except the US maybe) go on the streets and celebrate and dance and drink beer. Even those who are normally not interested in any sports join the worldwide party.

Edited by: Fearless M0F0 on 01/04/2011 01:49:28 After witnessing a number of live sports events in the last few years i've come to the realization that in any sport, no matter how easy it seems to you, the athletes are performing it at such a high level that we, the physically ungifted, can never reach.
Growing up in South America I used to laugh at gringos and their weird boring sports, then I moved to Dallas and got invited to a Texas Rangers game. Dude, have you seen these outfielders warming up by throwing a baseball 100 mts from each other?
Then I went to a Cowboys game and I saw these giant 300 pound dudes run faster than Olympic sprinters and hit the crap out of each other
Anybody that says this or that is not an sport or its easy should just go to a pro game and, while watching it, think if you can do that. You need to see it live, all sports look easy on TV.
Edit: GO RANGERS! -- I take offense on people feeling offended by me |

The last Fifa Worldcup finals where watch by billions. No other sport event can claim that.
Let's see...Japan...South Korea...Taiwan...Most of Latin America--all play and enjoy baseball. Many Taiwanese and Japanese teams have won the Little League World Series.
Baseball is both an individual and team sport. It's Sandy Koufax pitching a perfect game on a sunny summer day in Dodger Stadium...It's Babe Ruth pointing to the outfield and hitting a home run...It's Lou Gehrig while suffering from the disease that bears his name saying that he was the "luckiest man on earth"...It's Hank Aaron braving the horrible racist letters and vile threats breaking Babe Ruth's homerun record against my beloved Dodgers...it's Jackie Robinson putting up with horrible abuse from fans and players as he broke the color barrier...it's Pee Wee Reese putting his arm around Jackie--that simple gesture speaking louder than any words could hope to...it's Cal Ripkin Jr. breaking Lou Gehrig's Iron Man record...It's Joltin'Joe DiMaggio hitting 56 consecutive times at bat--a record that will probably never be broken.
All these things and more are what baseball is to me... "Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies." Groucho Marx |

Ok Im not trying to argue here, but most of them do not have "professional" baseball leagues. Only like 4 countries have professional baseball leagues iirc : S.Korea, Japan, USA and some country i dont remember.

Well not everyone is american, but if there are americans, its just easier to say soccer than saying football explaining later on that you did not mean american football.
