what? put bluntly, after all the changes made since deep space probes were introduced back in Eve Online: Revelations, they have lost most, if not all of their purposeful functionality.
how?
to name a few (or rather the most significant) changes:
- The Deep Space scan probe used to have a base strength of 20 as seen in the chart above. What made it so special was that it could cover large areas of space with higher scan strength (allowing you to reach 25% for most of your signatures and identify them) at the cost of a high deviation (so you couldn't pinpoint them without switching to core/combat). Unfortunately, the Deep Space Probes were nerfed and had their base strength reduced to 5 from 20. This was a huge blow for DSSP's because it meant that they were now identical in strength to core and combat probes at equivalent ranges. It then was no longer purposeful or advantageous in any way to use DSSP's to scan for signatures within the 32 AU range of core probes, or within the 64 AU range of combat probes. It thenafter only proved useful at its 128 and 256 AU ranges (which at those distances the low signal strength and huge deviation makes using more than one probe unreliable) which more or less breaks the probe down to a "do sigs exist here" probe.
- The second most impacting change for deep space probes was the deep safe nerf/purge. No longer were there hidden ships and containers in the outer reaches of systems, and no longer were deep space probes needed to locate them. To add furthermore, 3/4 of the systems in eve don't nearly span the 128-256 AU ranges of DSSP's. This amazing probe was nerfed so much, it is now and still is useless in 99% of all the cases it could be used.
What can be changed to redefine its role as a scanning probe?
-Give the Deep Space Probe back it's original base scan strength so it can be used as a signature identifier rather than a weak reflection of its former 1000 AU Observator Deep Space Probe. I find it also rather inappropriate for all players to require training Astrometrics 5 when comparing the training time to its current usefulness.
- Another issue I found was with the sisters' variant of the deep space scanner probe. While all other faction core and combat probes get a signal strength increase, deep space probes do not, but rather get a warp speed increase....That is completely useless
-So as it stands we have a nearly useless probe type out there. If we were to undo the changes made to deep space probes and return its strength back to 20, we would see much more motivation in isolated environments like wormhole space where probing and identifying signatures are of paramount importance. Deep Space probes were the perfect tool in wormhole space to quickly differentiate between signatures.

DSP are significantly useful. Most people just don't realize this or simply haven't learned the secrets of probes.

and that is scanning out deep safed ships? DSPs are no more effective at 64 au than DSPs at max also.
also the "secret" was made public by black viper nomads via their scanning website

You are misinformed.
DSP are fine and working quite well.
