We have lots of ways for players to screw each other. The environment should get its chance to make ppl cry too.
Cometary impacts on planets.(turns a temperate to a barren for one example)
Novas/Solar Flares. (POS deaths galore)
Catastrophic Gate failures. (big booms)
Random mass-induced warp failures.(passing uncharted masses drops pilots out of warp)
Deep-space fauna capable of destroying ships. (the belt has no rats .. watch for the space whale/wolf/whatever that eats ships for example)
Mini black holes left over from universe formation that periodically wander into systems sucking down ships/etc.

No. This is competitive game, we don't need more randomness.

Nice in theory, however the forums would burn with the cries of dev favouritism (Why is <insert hated alliance here> never hit?)
Smaller scale (random mass POS death is bad mkay), maybe grid wide, would be better.
Also these events must have a warning of some description so players know they are taking a risk by going there. Random ship loss for no reason is a good way to make ppl ragequit.

disasters sound good but do not have to be actually random and instead using systematic variables
Comets - each constellation could get 1-3 comets for ice/rare mineral mining, when they are mined out they can dissapate or crash onto nearby system planets (ice -> temperate, temperate -> barren, barren -> jungle, jungle -> fire, fire-> storm, storm -> water
Novas - All suns should probably deal damage depending on color when in close orbit (blue suns - em, yellow suns - thermal, red suns - explosive, whitesuns - kinetic) suns should be able to be gas/energy mined (new science ship?) and if one system takes a severe loss by heavy extraction from multiple (hundreds/thousands of ships daily) then system can nova or blackhole (the system still exists but is battleground/pirate space... of course if some systems would actually have more than 1 sun then this might not be a problem (nearby planets would be destroyed from nova/hole)
Catastrophic Gate failures. (big booms) only if they are damaged being attacked by enemy alliances...or perhaps hacked by a high level science ship
Random mass-induced warp failures.(passing uncharted masses drops pilots out of warp) - onlyl when flying through nebula or darkspace with spacial/warp distortion clouds
Deep-space fauna capable of destroying ships. (the belt has no rats .. watch for the space whale/wolf/whatever that eats ships for example) is a fun idea like asteroid monsters but only in deep 0.0 space or unpopulated systems that haven't had alot of human pilots flying through them
Mini black holes left over from universe formation that periodically wander into systems sucking down ships/etc. (like an incursion everyone should probably get a big warning so they can move their stuff out of this system... wandering too quickly could be annoying)
planetary or lunar destruction (being hit by dozens of titan doomsday weapons, hours of multiple dreadnought bombardment...) of course if corps starting blowing up faction planets/assets then i think factions like amarr/ammatar/minmatar/caldari/gallente/pirate factions should declare war on those megacorps/alliances for being too powerful/destryoing planets or moons

Make specific message to inform the player something is going on... will he react ?

Id like some random events, but none like how you describe. However much like we have incursions right now - if we were to have unoccupied systems have gate failure or explosions and change the routing system would be cool. Would make some areas desireable/undesireable for some time.
However as someone mentioned earlier people would forum whine about dev favoritism if this event were to happen on a pipeline that would be beneficial to some and not others. So ... all in all ... I think it would raise more problems then commit to 'better gameplay'. [≡v≡] |

The only natural catastrophe here is the OP. Btw. if you are bored, go to lowsec. Plenty of catastrophes there for you.

risk/reward? What would I gain by living in a hurricane or earthquake zone in Virtual Life?
Until they put in a big, big, plus for the negative of randomness..
I'm with The Offerer on this!

Well, what do you gain from living in a hurricane or earthquake zone in REAL life? I mean, why do people live in Japan, California, Florida, or Louisiana... I mean, aside from the awesome weather, superior natural resources, access to unique markets...
If Eve is a real PvP game, then it needs the occasional shake-up to increase competition. Natural disasters let shake-ups occur more frequently... and not just when the Dev's introduce something new or change the game balance in some random way.
Considering how much of the game is ALREADY random (where sites spawn, what mission you get, what devs change next), I'm 100% behind this. (I'd also like more randomness in nullsec rats... preferrably set up so anyone "chaining" them gets a chance for a custom-chosen NPC sleeper-like rat to start hunting them down...)
(Apply the same thing to mission runners too, btw.)

Edited by: Psyatt on 04/04/2011 00:22:22 I was thinking of semi-rare events rather than incursion-like frequency.
It is refreshing to see balanced debate with ideas rather than flames.
A warning system would be needed for all events to keep emoragequitage down.
Example: All installation owners of a planet about to be hit by a comet would get a evemail from CONCORD with some-yet-to-be-determined warning time.
Upon entering a system with any random environmental effect in progress, the Local MOTD would be used to reveal any pertinent information.
Thinking on it... novas would be too harsh. Wiping out a system's worth of POSs would cause a pitchfork and torches riot(even though it would be great youtube video.. system-wide oldskool DD).
Solar Flares though, could be directional in nature, striking and effecting POSs or Station grids. Targeting failure at the least, shield failures/drone deaths in extreme cases, or any other flare effect one could reasonably postulate. Flare duration times could be fun to tweak.
I like the idea of making space-fauna populate the dead-end systems. One-gate systems would have a nice bonus.
The mini black holes could be avoided or even escaped from with the right engine/mass/distance ratio. Want a screenshot of the accretion disc?
As for a reward system...
Comet impact points could provide PI players with a massive hotspot of some goody relating to the new planet type.
Space fauna "bodies" could be salvaged(like whaling) for rare biomass products. Bring friends to hunt the space Bandersnatch. Your ratting BS is a yummy energy-filled snack which makes the thing get bigger and harder to kill with every ship it eats. Chaining attempts could prove fatal once it eats enough to form its own warp scrambling field around itself instead of a single-target energy tentacle. Mess around too much and you may need caps to haul a monster in. I could see alliances tending herds of them. New EVE career.. space herder. :) You have to tend the herd and watch for poachers.
A solar flare could be taken advantage of in various tactical ways.
Gate failures make for yummy loot and salvage for the lucky ones who get on-scene first after an event.

+1 for space fauna. i like the idea of being able to herd them. resource harvesting atm is MINE IT ALLLLLL DEPLETE DEPLETE DEPLETE. the space fauna herding idea rewards people who invest time and energy into the critters appropriatly, and it rewards those who slaughter herds of them appropriatly. that said, we should be sure that this does not become nintendogs online. how about making them something distinctly unlovable, like ravenous space worms or freakish insect monsters?
as for the idea of making there be a solar flare which can wipe out pos, i don't like the idea. no one event should be able to wipe out what is potentially billions of isk in one random moment, even if the owners were given weeks to move. how about a two week warning to everyone involved, and the pos gets 50% resistances reductions?
supporting what was said above, random ship deaths are bad.

Each species of critter would match the color of the nebula in the backround to blend in with its surroundings. Each color would correspond with certain offensive/defensive traits and possible biomass rewards.
Amorphous energy/matter cloud/amoeba. They eat rocks when they have to, but energy sources with high metal content are like dark chocolate to a woman with PMS. If it exudes a tentacle and touches your ship, your scrammed and webbed according to mass difference between you and the critter. Then it starts "eating" your ship with damage type appropriate to its species.
Base critter has more than Battleship tank but less than dread... whatever it takes to laugh off a ratting BS while the beasty dines.
They cannot "see" pods/drones. Too small.
The "Toxic Cloud" mission has the code for the critter dps.
Same code could be used for Flares.
I agree no POS should die outright to any effect like Flares. I like resist loss according to sun type.
Edit --
new possibility to herding... cloaked herders wait for poachers to warp in ... decloak and jam.
Critter food.

I like the idea of the comets - but instead of gradually turning all planets down to storm - have them cycle - I'm not entirely sure how... hmmm, water -> ice -> temperate -> barrren -> lava -> plasma -> storm -> water
and instead of that comet only doing the damage when it's mined out - make it do the damage if it's not mined to extinction... if there's nothing there, what'll kill everything on planet X?
