Hey guys,
I upgraded to a raven about a week ago from my drake, and my raven is just not impressing me. Not impressing me so much that my drake would actually still be better. I have tried multiple fittings on the raven and came to the conclusion that my skill set must be lacking something horrible. Can anyone tell me what skills I may be missing that play a big role in a raven's effectiveness? I have all missile launcher skills as well as all tanking(engineering) skills. Thanks in advance for any answers. Fly safe!

I had the same problem when I lost my first Raven, but I was not fitting it correctly. What are you not impressed with (DPS, or Tank)? What does your fitting look like?

I started level 4 missions with all defensive skills at level 4+5 and cruise missile skill at level 2. I suspect that if you are having problems, then it is fitting related, or strategy.
I liked to use the Raven's long range with cruise missiles to its advantage. Immediately on warp-in if I couldn't warp to 100 km, I'd start heading away from the NPC, and continue doing so until 105 km, and orbit until about half of the room was completed. Then I'd turn-around and head to the next gate, so that I'd reach the gate just as I destroyed the last NPC in the room. When at 105 km, I could turn-off the shield hardeners, as no NPC can shoot that far.
The only NPC to worry about with this method are webbers, which have to be killed ASAP, or fast NPC like Angels which this doesn't work well on (keep moving anyways, as that reduces incoming damage). I've pulled entire rooms of NPC and kited/sniped them like this.
It typically took me 2 volley's to destroy a battlecruiser, so learn to recognize what they look like from their target icon, and only fire enough volleys to destroy them (count). I also found that 1 volley would be enough for a destroyer, which was faster than using drones.
Make sure to bring drones to deal with frigates and cruisers.
Choose the right shield hardeners for the NPC type. Read Mission Reports for this and other info.

idk
theres something wrong with the damn raven and the tengu imo
A battleship with half the tank of the bc counterpart, same dps when long range?
The t3 that has the same dps (bit less actually) as the bc counterpart...smaller sig radius meh :/
These r my skills tho i guess experience varies...i stay in the drake for the stated reasons, the investment is nowhere near worth it...I can of course get a raven to 1100 dps plus...but the range doesnt seem usable.
In a drake i get 534dps out to 76kms (ok thats including drones but u know what i mean) so whats the point of spending 2-20x that amount on the ship
Not whining, I can make enough to plex 2 accounts over the month easily ratting part-time just seems a bit off
I use the Raven to shoot buildings and have never assembled my tengu :)

As someone else said above, dont fly a raven until you can fit it full T2, when you can its a great BS.

Maybe assemble the tengu, to claim a drake isnt that far off it is the most ******ed thing ive read on here in months. tengu is the best ship in eve, cillet bang removes all known germs, fact. and how the hell does a drake have similar dps to a tengu? do tell. As someone else pointed out, if you cant fit a raven full t2, dont fly it, when you can, its a great BS.

534 dps including drones:
[Drake, isk farmer]
7x Heavy Missile Launcher II (Scourge Fury Heavy Missile)
2x Invulnerability Field II Large Shield Extender II Warp Disruptor II X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburners
3x Ballistic Control System II Damage Control II
3x Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
5x Hobgoblin II
------------------------
maybe i should put up my own post.
any tengu fit i've tested in eveHQ doesnt seem worth it maybe its a bug :) In a sec status -.6 i get 28+mil an hour plus loot plus faction if it drops

Just don't jump into big and expensive ships too early, especially if you can't fit most things with T2 stuff. The ship training is treacherous, you can easily fly ships you can't really fly so to speak.

cruise missiles are fail, torps are the way to go. Thing is that once you get enough dps, you dont need a tank to do lvl 4's and cruise missiles will never come close to torp damage. The range is a ***** at start but just stick to missions vs angels for example since they like to orbit you @ 5km anyway.

It's hard to compare your fit to a Tengu since you don't have a mission fit (which is what people usually look for when comparing Drake/Tengu/Raven). For missions, you generally can't fit more than 2 BCS. Also, you might as well mention that you need a CPU implant for that fit (which seems pretty pointless when you can swap so much Tech II for either best named or faction).
A similar Tengu could be:
[Tengu Tech II Ratting]
7x Heavy Missile Launcher II (Scourge Fury Heavy Missile)
2x Invulnerability Field II Large Shield Extender II Warp Disruptor II X5 Prototype I Engine Enervator Y-S8 Hydrocarbon I Afterburners
3x Ballistic Control System II Damage Control II
3x Medium Core Defence Field Extender I
Accelerated Ejection Bay Supplemental Screening Fuel Catalyst Augmented Capacitor Reservoir CPU Efficiency Gate
Not saying that this is the best ratting or mission Tengu or even a good one, but it's far, far better than your Drake (with mostly my skills):
Drake Tengu DPS 554 634 (without Drones!) EHP 83,213 94,744 Regen 149 omni 111 omni Speed 392 m/s 579 m/s Sig 517m 288m
The Drake's regen advantage is outweighed by the huge advantage to the Tengu's speed and sig. And the Tengu fits without implants (with AWU V).
But please don't build a Tengu like this. Just please don't ever accuse the Drake of being as good as the Tengu in any way, except that it can equip a salvager without sacrificing a med slot..
