Pff. I've updated that list with at least 4 more points by now, not counting some examples of old points that could conceivably be broken out into their own points because they don't quite fit the labels I originally put on the listà ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Weeellà Let's just say this:
For all it's faults and foibles, these forums have at least taught me to compose important messages as txt files first. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Still have to ask: why are you people running your browsers so wide (or, worse, full-screen)?
Have you tried just narrowing down the browser window and using the left-over space for something useful (e.g. a second browser window)?
I still feel that the width was one of the few things the new forums did right (but I'll admit that it was also immediately made wrong again by making the entire design static, using absolute measurements on fonts and related sizes).
You want 45û65 characters widths per line to get the best readability. At the font sizes everyone uses for full-length text, this ends up as somewhere around 500û700px width. Add some padding and sidebars to that and 1000px is pretty much to be expected (and it fits nicely on portrait-swivelled monitors). ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |

Originally by: Akita T Some people find "newspaper column" type writing to be easiest to absorb (mostly up/down eye motions), others find "formatted//paragraphed wall of text" easier to absorb (mostly left/right eye motions). Myself, I am in the latter category, since I am what you could call a "speed reader".
Yes, but even speed reading benefits from normal columns (45-65em) ù a newspaper column is much more narrow than that (commonly 20em or so).
In fact, the reason for that particular width is exactly because it allows you to speed-read: at 45em you get one or two "focus-points" per line; you can easily see both the end of the current line and the beginning of the next; the brain wastes no time searching for the next line, and you don't have to waste space on extra line-height to make that task easier. At 65em, it goes to maybe two or three such focus points ù one if you're a well-trained reader.
The problem with the left-right eye movement (even among those who prefer it) is that you quickly lose track of that line-to-line connection and have to actively search for the continuation of the text. If you're just skimming, it makes little difference ù you're just looking for the keywords ù but as soon as you actually try to read, it bogs down the brain.
What differs from person to person is whether you skim or read, far more than how you actually read. ùùù ôIf you're not willing to fight for what you have in ≡v≡à you don't deserve it, and you will lose it.ö ù Karath Piki |
