I'm new to the game, learning everything as quickly as possible. Impressed with the new graphics when I compare them to Eve videos of even a year ago. I started playing because the idea of a completely open ended sandbox style game- giving players a framework with which to do as they saw fit- really intrigued me.
What I'm finding is that the large majority of senior players no longer play actively, PVP is very polarized around a few particular ships/setups, PVP doesn't scale very well between 1v1, small gang and fleet combat, entire groups of systems go virtually unused and are deserted (low security space) with little to differentiate the systems from high sec and 0.0.
And somehow, I feel that if all of this existed, but the game was brand new, it wouldn't be a big deal because everyone would be on the same footing, dealing with the same poor game design. As it is, the core game design hasn't changed in over eight years, and CCP seems to be intent on making the game more and more safe for players prone to mistakes in the hopes that they won't cancel a subscription because they were shot in the face.
It's too bad really- the stories I've been told about the game, the epic space battles, the wars that span months and years, the brilliant scams and political backstabbing, the cold blooded piracy. It seems most of that doesn't exist anymore as CCP continues to reduce the opportunity for unsolicited PVP. I think the time where creative players could kill unsuspecting players in new and innovative ways has passed, even before I have the chance to play. The golden age of Eve is fading into a sterile and controlled environment where the sandbox is slowly being turned into a walled garden. |

This is still the case, nothing has changed within the last year to prevent/reduce this.

Low-Sec is ALWAYS dead, it is a issue of risk/reward that is known to CCP and the majority of the galaxy. To be fair the last ~3 months have been dead due to the fact the weather is beautiful. When it turns to **** we'll all be back 60+ hours a week into EVE.

CCP is trying to reduce the difficulty of the learning curve by making pilots combat ready sooner, this requires them to make money and train intelligently, the NPE (New Player Experience) is directly to achieve these goals.

Wars that span years -- North vs South... still going strong Political Backstabbing - Goonswarm blue on blue destroyed (15?) Titans in production in the last year. Cold Blooded Piracy - One of the greatest PVP alliances in the game (Pandemic Legion) now camps low-sec gates Epic Space Battles - look up the CFC vs -A- stuff, they are pretty epic. Creative Piracy - It is easier than ever to raid people PLEXing
Seriously if you want a taste of what EVE has to offer join ANY null-sec corporation,if all else fails you can still for the love of god join CVA, they'll take anyone who hasn't screwed up horribly, and even then they'll let you pay your dues and join despite a spotted past.
Want to be a scumbag? Goonswarm won't take you? Join TEST... Test won't take you join Southern Cross, they are the scumbag equivalent of CVA.
There is NOTHING stopping you from experiencing everything you've listed, I didn't even name a FRACTION of the good corporations out there willing to take on anyone.

I just had a thought- it would be cool to compare metrics for each year, with all players who are actively online for more than 5 hours per week displayed, and broken down into age of each character. This would give a fairly good representation of active characters, and how old those characters are, and what percentage each split is. I'd be curious to see if the total active numbers for characters over five years were more or less than today, compared to 1 year, 3 years, 5 years ago etc. |

Not sure I believe this is not a bitter vet alt (it stinks of it) but giving you the benefit of the doubt I will give you the usual array of colorful advice I give to all newbies.
1. Make peace with the fact that an MMO has the word Multiplayer in it for a reason and it is made by people who where around when that actually ment something. You cannot play this game solo and expect to be anything but a high sec pubbie or a miserable failure everywhere else. Join a good, active crew and get involved in this games first and most important aspect of the game, multiplayer.. say it with me ...!
2. Don't go out and join major alliances and corps on your first day. The opposite advice is always given to new players but recognize that 90% of these are trolls and scams (appears you already discovered that). Build a reputation through smaller corps so that when you do apply to a legit alliance/corp you appear to know what the hell you are doing. Oh and NO ALLIANCES OR CORPS WORTH JOINING WILL ASK FOR AN APPLICATION FEE.. **** that needs to be tatooed on every newbies head as soon as they join. If someone asks for a application fee, its a scam.. PERIOD. Anyone who says otherwise is trying to screw you.
3. Don't rush ship progression. Learn to fly a frigate, learn to fly a cruiser, learn to fly a battlecruiser and so on. The worse PvPer is always the one who doesn't understand what job they have and what job other members of their fleet have. The worse offenders of this are usually larger corporations and alliances who have less control over their fleets, naturally because everyone is simply expected to know what to do, hence again, this is why you should join a small crew from which you can learn before you get out their and swap paint with the big boys.
4. Don't be a miner. Just saying, the fastest route to hating this game is becoming a miner as a newbie in high sec. It is a past time in Eve to **** with miners. Mining and industry can be a fun and exciting career, but not if your doing it in high sec, not if your doing it solo and not if your doing it as a fragile newbie (the favorite target of suicide gankers)
5. Be prepared to lose ships in this game whether you choose to participate in PvP or not. NEVER leave a space station in a ship you cant afford to get blown up or with cargo you cant afford to get blown up. Don't let all that High Sec is safer than ever talk jumble your brain, people will kill you, make the target sweet enough and I will kill you and I don't usually kill people in high sec. Eve is an opportunistic paradise, don't be an oppertunitity for anyone.
Finally whatever you do, do it with pride. Don't talk trash in local on people who blew you up. Don't be a cry baby and come to the forums everytime **** goes wrong and remember these two and only two words you should ever utter to an opponent. Good Fight!
The reality of Eve is that, if you don't love it like it is today, you should probobly go ahead and unsub.-á |

2 years after Eve was released people complained on how it was pointless to start since there would be those who are so far ahead and they could never catch up. Things haven't changed nor does it matter. The only difference that being a vet will cause is becoming a bittervet, as far as gameplay wise after a few months(if you specialize) you should be able to have some role in almost all fleets, outside of being a suicide tackler. |

I'm not worried about competing SP wise. With just under 12m SP, I have good core skills (all 4 or 5) and am able to fly a Vaga with a full T2 fit. I think I'm quite competitive PVP wise when compared to a 30M SP player with a similar fit. It's not about catching up SP wise. |

I still don't see where you are coming from. People still get scammed, wars still happen, and people still get ganked. Nothing has really dramatically changed that has made things "safer" for people. Unless you believe suicide ganking and high sec wars are the epitome of Eve's "golden age". |

Your fit or SP are irrelevant, what matters is your doing it solo and as such you will always get your ass handed to you by everyone except the inept. Your not really playing Eve yet, you are paying for an account.

I see all sorts of different ships used in PVP for various different reasons. You need to get out more or find a more creative corporation to fly with.
Quote:entire groups of systems go virtually unused and are deserted (low security space) with little to differentiate the systems from high sec and 0.0.
Yes, space is big, and empty at times. Those are the "bad" systems to live in. Figure out where the "good" systems are and you'll find lots of people, whether it's high, low or nullsec.

Feelings..... nothing more than... feelings... wait, what? I thought you were new. What's this about 8 years of unchanged game design?

I too believe everything I am told, and form my opinions based on those "facts" alone.
