I've never been FC'd before, but am going to be later on today :p. I can see lots of guides to being an FC, but none for being a squad member - i.e. simple things like "if you need armor, press the need armor button". Trouble is, I know Eve and there's probably a dumb setting somewhere I don't know about that will stop the request getting to whoever needs it. So, how do I setup for fleet? Do I just join and everything is clockwork?
Thanks.
p.s. Noob Alert!

Do what the FC asks you to.

Fly what you can afford to loose.

Yea but... if I want to request armor, or cap, or any kind of RR, do I just press the button?
These dumb questions are embarrassing to ask in fleet :p.

Use your broadcasts if you need armor/shield/cap. In smaller gangs, you could get away with saying "Character Name Here needs X" but larger fleet, use the broadcasts. You should always have that window open
Have your overview set up correctly. Your organization should have a few setups or enlighten you to what they require
If you are the warp in, say your character name over comms. Nobody likes a F*** OH GOD WARP TO ME WARP TO ME
Do not talk unless its important to the combat at hand, keep your fleet chat clear. You think you are clever. You are not.

There's little icons on your fleet window, they look like symbols for shields/armor/cap/etc with a little red cross over them (hover your mouse over it to make sure). IF your fleet has logi's, they should be able to begin repping you moment you press one of those icon buttons for specific rep/cap you need. (of course, you don't exactly ask for armor reps when your fleet is running with shield repping logis and vice versa) Just be sure to ask for reps the moment you begin taking damage to give the logis time to target and lock you. Don't ask for reps when you're half way down in armor/shield, cause usually by that time, it'd be too late. If the logis miss your calls for shields/armor/cap in the chaos of battle, then the fleet's composition of logi to dps ship is not ideal or it's due to incompetent logi pilots.
As for not knowing the finer details of fleeting, just encounter them as you go. It's best if you ask a corpmate or someone willing to show you a quick run down of pvp/fleet procedures. Or if the fleet you're in is chillax (or if there's not much going on) and not buttanal serious or in the middle of a tense situation, you can just ask for info in fleet text chat.
It's better to be embarrassed from asking noob questions than dying or causing fleet op to fail from not asking questions.

If you're talking >30 man fleets and you're in a dps ship it's as simple as fitting your ship properly, aligning and jumping when the fc tells you to, shooting the primary, broadcasting for reps and generally not saying anything on comms unless it's really important.
These days it's usually drakes, abaddons or fleet fit maelstroms, which aren't exactly the most difficult ships to fly. Not a big fan of larger fleets because you're generally only as good as your FC and there's not much room for individual skill outside of the dictors, FC and logi.

Don't wreck the harmony. Do what the FC says, even if it's idiotic. You can pod him later, but creating an internal-fleet row will be worse for the fleet than having a bad FC. -------- Enemy corps raided into disbandment: Three.

There are actually quite a few subtleties to being a good peon.
Fleet broadway window: be sure to set broadcast to all and not just to your squad or wing. If you are dos then configure to NOT receive shield/armor/cap broadcasts. If you are a logi, set it to not receive targeting broadcasts.
Set up your watchlist to include fc, anchor, scouts, and backups for all of the above. Know what distance to orbit your anchor at if there is one.
If you are a warpin, don't just say your name on comms. Also type wwwww in the fleet channel so people can click on your name for warp.
Set you overview up correctly. This is a topic to itself but at least make sure friendlies aren't on there and set it to move broadcasted targets to the top.
Be sure you are in the right wing and squad for warping and logistical purposes. Be ready to move into/out of squad leader positions depending on your leadership skills.
Bookmark the places your fleet warps to. Comes in very handy when you have to warp around on your own.
Volunteer for dangerous duties when called for.
There's lots more I'm sure but thats off the top of my head. - sig |

voice coms-
Be on them have push to talk setup. no chatter over comms unless its important. Asking the FC to clarify an order is sometimes ok, but better to ask questions in fleet-chat, your fleet members will fill you in that way
overview - have an overview tab that only shows hostiles.
in combat -
no one cares if you're dying or getting primaried. Its your responsibility to know if you have logi or not, and to warp out on your own initiative to save your ship. Do not clutter coms with **** like "i'm dying."
If your targets are on a gate or station and in position to jump through or dock, if one aggresses you, THAT is important and you should tell your fc.
If the primary is out of your range, you need to decide on a target of oppourtunity and apply your dps somewhere else. You also need to decide if its worth trying to burn into range, or better to stay with your fleet. This is highly situational.
lastly, for the LOVE OF GOD, listen to the fc and DO NOT lemming through gates until the FC distinctly says "JUMP." be sure to listen closely enough to tell the difference betwenn "JUMP" and "DON'T JUMP." Good FC's will use the word "HOLD" instead of "DON'T JUMP" because most people will jump upon hearing the word regardless of context.
These are fairly basic rules, and you'll find that with a bit of experience you don't even need to pay that much attention to be a good fleet member. It all gets more complicated when you start filling specialty roles like scout or are in a mixed or small gang.

Edited by: Othran on 11/04/2011 11:37:27 Edited by: Othran on 11/04/2011 11:31:19 Those who know me will find this pretty funny but meh here we go :
1) Shut up. Really. Its extremely unlikely you have any info that needs to be in the voice channel. Type any intel into the fleet channel;
2) Sort out your watch list. If nobody tells you otherwise then add your squad commander, any inties in your squad and any logistics. DO NOT ADD scouts/covops unless specifically told to. Last thing a covops pilot needs is someone clicking the wrong menu option and warping to them at zero;
3) Layout the screen so you can have the fleet window open (pin it transparent), your watch list open and any broadcasts visible;
4) If you need reps then press "need shield/armour" but do it early. Also be aware that the logistic ships may not be able to rep you as they have a higher priority. Its your ship so don't be passive, if the choice is warp off-grid or die then warp-off and come back (unless you're the only person with a point on the target in which case you usually stick).
tl;dr shut up, sort watchlist/etc, watch/use broadcasts and listen. Oh and really, shut up
Edit - if its a really small gang then you'll need to give some feedback to the FC like "<yourname> has point on Drake", just keep it short. Its not rocket science - you'll enjoy it, for a while anyway

Although it's all been sterling advice so far. One thing I'd add: Fly your ship. Too often pilots end up relying on the FC to dictate their every move. You need to do a bit of work yourself too. Obviously some FC's don't want you breaking off to grab points or jumping after targets but some do and it's useful to know what degree of freedom you are offered. FC's can't give specific orders to everyone and IMO tacklers in particular need to be doing their own thing to a certain degree. Still, at the very least, do everything you'd normally do: manage range/speed/cap and don't just sit in the blob.

Most important tip. Even if you fail - at least people will remember you.
/edit: Oh, and shut up on voice comms. It is usually not important that you die. It is usually not important that you've seen an enemy ship because the FC should have eyes there anyway.

Especially important if you are on a long op and drinking:
Don't leave comms to go on a bio break unless it's an offical fleet bio break.
Wee into a bottle by your comp instead.

here's something I wrote to my corp on comm etiquette. If you've ever been in the military, it's basically the lite (tm) version of that.
---
In voice - only speak if you have important information. Try to be brief. If it is not clear who you are or who you are speaking to, identify yourself with military style identification protocal, i.e. "You this is Me."
ex.
"FC this is Montmazar. Tannakan clear."
FC: "Roger, fleet warp Tannakan, jump on contact."
Times it is okay to speak in fleet:
1) You are the FC. 2) The FC designates you target caller. 3) The FC designates you scout and solicits a report, or you have other important information you deem worthy. I.e. enemy movements the fleet cannot see 4) You have other, critical information.
In the event of 3 and 4, if there is any conversation going in voice, it is proper to interrupt. Interrupt by saying "break break."
Additionally, if given a personal order or acknowledging personal information, it is acceptable to respond with "roger" or "check."
i.e.
FC: "Montmazar, move to Anka and report."
"Roger."
Other than the above, do not speak in fleet. Chat in lulls is fine, just do it by typing in fleet (if the FC is okay with that). Occassionally, the FC will say "go ahead and BS on comms." That is only okay for one reason - the FC said so.

To add a couple things:
Know your role. Are you DPS? Are you Logi? Are you E-War? etc.
LISTEN/BE ATTENTIVE. If the FC didn't say jump, then don't jump. Understand, and listen for words like, Primary, Secondary, De-aggress, Align, etc.
As mentioned before, comms should be at minimal. If you do talk, keep the information clear, consise. Short/sweet/direct. Stay calm.
Don't shoot random targets. DPS stays on primary or if you mistarget, get back to the primary asap. (Logi and E-war have a different aggenda)
The only things that are generally allowed as interuptions during a fight, are short comments like: "A Falcon is here" "A cyno is lit" "Local spike" "Falcon is dead" etc. You get the picture.
Bad: Warp to me! Good: Warp to Tick at zero.
Bad: Warp to the gate! Good: Warp to the Ich gate.
Bad: I'M BEING PRIMARIED! OMFG! MY SHIP IS GOING DOWN! REP ME REP ME! (at some point, your own fleet will want to shoot you) Good: Ven needs reps. (Ven has probably already broadcast it, or will soon)
Best thing you can do in a fleet is to be dependable and fearless. As your fleetmates get to know you, everyone will know the fleets strengths and weakness's.

Great advice everyone. I've not yet been in a fleet and event though I devour new Eve info daily from many sources, I have yet to run across really good details like these on being a good fleet member.
