Looks like the U.S. Navy is moving towards Amarr Laser Tech instead of MAC's(Hybrids) or Projectiles perhaps?
Hmmm...

The US Navy also displays a telling lack of shield-tanked boats. More evidence of an Amarrian mindset taking hold.

This is old news. The US Military has had fully functional lasers since 2009. Look up the Air-Born Laser Program.

Yes, but this was a ship based laser that has to deal with the denser sea air. Meaning, this laser would work well in Eve's "Space is Molasses" physics model.

What is it with America and wasting money, it's a real life example of that urban legend about NASA spending billions on developing a pen that can write in space while Russia just used pencils. Except in this case they're spending billions developing lasers while the rest of the world would just shoot the outboard motor with a .50 cal.

Couple this with their heavy use of RADAR based scanners, and I think we can all agree that the only logical next step is for the entire navy to repaint their ships a really tacky golden color, and replace all their nuclear power cores with anti-matter reactors.
Originally by: Wilhelm Riley it's a real life example of that urban legend about NASA spending billions on developing a pen that can write in space while Russia just used pencils.
The reason America spent millions developing the spacepen is because when the tips of pencils inevitably snap off in a zero gravity environment, they tend to float away and stick in hard to find places, only to puncture previously air-tight fixtures in the cabin as soon as you accelerate the craft. If the Russians do still use pencils in space, this neatly demonstrates and encapsulates why their space program was and is so terrible, and why they kept killing astronauts in horrific ways during the 60's.

Do we really need to explain the benefit of lasers? Or are you just ****ed off cause no one is going to redirect a laser into a house full of corn in your laserless country.

Yeah but they are shooting for a laser that can penetrate 2000 inches (or was it feet?) of steel a second. This is just the proof-of-concept to let the Somali pirates know what their outboard motors mean.
Oh, and China's carrier-killing missile? From what I've read, they have about ten years to use it before the US navy will be able to zap it with one of these units.
I can't wait till this hits the civilian market. Will be nice to be able to invisibly melt my neighbor's house as a prank.

Well, judging by all of the movies that I've ever seen about alien invasions, Earth always tries to outwit and outsmart the aliens using good old fashioned projectile weapons. So we can safely say that, if the aliens do come, they will have lasers and such. We're just evening the playing field so we don't fail like we did in the beginning of every single alien movie ever made. Sure, in the end we make some ridiculous discovery and win or at least start to win before the credits roll, but for ONCE, I'd like us to actually beat back the aliens during the first wave. For that, we need lasers. You can thank us later.
Better to spend a bunch of money to find the thing that works, instead of spending small bits of money on projects that fail. Spend money for quality and you don't regret it later - half bake the job, and you'll wish you spend the extra money.

The US Military has had lasers going back to the 70s. Ship bourne lasers were first introduced in the 80s. Modernization is opening up doors that were not possible before. For example the tank in the 70s it took so much power to fire the laser it would disable the tank for some time after firing. In the mid 80s there were prototype lasers mounted on some carriers. All of which was of course top secret but widely known. The new destroyers are a result of decades of research and advancement making them far more efficient.
Also the viscosity of space in EVE is 30 weight motor oil....not molasses.

Sounds like a fail-fit, the tank probably didn't have any energy weapons bonuses. At the very least they should have fitted CCC rigs and an AB instead of a MWD.

For such a goal you might indeed as well rig a .50 to a radar and solve the issue that way. The advantage of lasers is more in CIWS, at which they are definately more useful than a 50 cal (only downside is i guess that you cannot track your fire with the radar).
But this is nothing new, more, it is really nothing interesting. You dont need any special lasers to achieve it. Granted your dealextreme laser wont do it, but any serious chemical laser should be able to do it. If they used a solid state laser it is slightly more impressive. And as I said, would be more useful when they present fully functioning laser based CIWS, then they might finally get ahead of goalkeeper for CIWS.
For long range the navy is kinda like eve, railguns and missiles. Until they get ongrid warps i wouldnt expect lasers to really take that over. (Simply not realistic due to curvature of earth).

And if you want to see just how scary projectile weapons can be.. google for 'Metal Storm'. 1 million rounds per minute baby.

Was reading about this last week.
So far in development we have railguns, lasers, magnetic shield systems, advanced robots and AI, virtual reality, quantum computing, one stage reusable spaceships, space elevators, commercial space flight... and that's just the tip of the iceberg.
The future is gonna be freaking awesome*
*Probably not

Bit of a noob to believe that old urban myth.
Russian cosmonauts were prohibited from using pencils in space since 1968 and the Soviets purchased 100 of the Fisher "space" pens, and 1,000 ink cartridges, in February 1969.
You see a broken pencil tip is a hazard in zero-g where it can lodge in control actuators or other such places where it can cause FOD or due to the nature of pencil "lead" being conductive so you have a fire/electrical short if it gets into the circuits. Not to mention the fire hazard of having wood in a 100% oxygen environment.
Check facts next time?

If the best a US navy laser can do is ligth some plastic covers on fire over several minuts. I am not impressed.
