I'm thinking about upgrading my motherboard from a AM2+ board to a AM3 board. The only reason I want to do this is so I don't have to buy a new CPU and new GPU's. Currently have 4 4870's in quad crossfire and a AMD Phenom II 940.
Reason I'm upgrading is cuz my comp is hurting on Ram when playing eve. DDR2 1066Mhz ram higher then 2GB has been completely phased out. Ebay leftovers cost 3 times what faster DDR3 goes for and is used/potentially damaged by inexperienced individuals.
The motherboard I'm looking at is the MSI 890FXA-GD70. It has 5 PCI express 16x slots. I figure I could put my GPU's in the top 4 and a cheap nvidia card in the final slot for Physx. Would I run into any trouble doing this? I'll prob be upgrading to a hexa core cpu too but that's for later.

There is a similar conversation going on here.
Wealth, howsoever got, in Eve makes Lords of morons and gentlemen of thieves; Aptitude and intellect are needless here; 'Tis impudence and money that grants fame. |

From what I understand Nvidia removed the restriction on "nvidia gpu's only" when using physx last year. Really my question is if anybody has tried using AMD for rendering and Nvidia for physx on eve. I'll be upgrading the motherboard ether way. But seeing as the captains quarters will be a mandatory feature when docked and CCP hasn't given us a physx disable option. I'd like to know what experience others have had with CCP's implementation of Physx before I decide to buy a Nvidia card for it.
A response on this from a Dev would be nice.

Do a search for Hybrid Physx Mod on google.
It is indeed possible and many people are enjoying the benefits. Don't let the misinformed take you down!! ;-)

doable with above utility.
also a 8800GT is enough as a physx processor. ---

Just an fyi, apart from simple software mods, its also actually supported with expensive hardware (Lucid Hydra LT24102 Multi-GPU Support); as used on the Asus Crosshair IV extreme mobo for example. Reviews all over web of that chipset & the Lucid.

I have a ATI5770 and a GTX470,tried to see if they would work on a build I finished last year, didn't work. The only real thing phyx is good for in eve is the avatar system aka clothes, hair, shadowing effects and render animations at the moment. Your better off maxing out on memory and CPU that you can afford before saving up for the most powerful nvidia card that will be the best bang for your buck.

the only thing that's physx enabled is hair and clothing. Hardly a huge issue and it has been stated before that if a physx card isn't present, the work will be done by the CPU
eve will still work if you have an ati card!! i'm sure as hell not buying a new gfx card just for some swishy hair and clothes.
if CCP make something worthwhile for me to defect to nvidia, then maybe i will buy one. but not yet.

Do yourself a favor and simplify your setup. In the long run it'll make life easier. There isn't any reason not to base your system off of the Nvidia GPU instead of mixing, which historically has lead to many compatibility issues noted or not.

Edited by: Iden Secundus on 17/04/2011 06:33:00 Since Incursion 1.4 E8400+ATI5830 isn't enough to handle the (useless) character generator in a smooth way. It seems that PhysX is not used (anymore?) or the simulation is more ineffcient now.
Combined missing respect of my privay ("eve-gate"), the missing goals (2 payed Carebear-Accounts since Beta) I assume that I will remove 2 usefull T2-BPO and 2 useless from the game...
