Sorry if this has been asked before, I struggled to know what to search for.
As per the subject, if someone gives me a ship with rigs already installed, for example a shield extending rig, would I gain the extra shield HP effect or would I gain no benefit until I learned the correct skill to fit it?
If I do get the benefit, I would guess I would get the worst possible hit on the side effect until I gain the skill to start mitigating this? Signature bloat I believe it is on the example above.

the rigs will work just fine with no reduction to their purpose, this also means no reduction in penelties.

The rig drawbacks are based off the character who did the rigging, so if you can get, get people who have rigging IV/V to rig all your ships.
You don't need the skills to get the benefits of rigs, and the skills of the current pilot do not affect the drawbacks. ...Then when you stopped to think about it. All you really said was Lalala. |

Please ignore the above; it is entirely false.
Rigging skills come up in two instances: installing (when first installing rigs, obviously) and drawback calculation (whenever the ship is piloted).
To install a T1 rig you need the skill at 1. To install a T2 rig, you need the skill at 4. That's it. The rigs work just fine after installation, even if a character without rigging skills uses the ship.
However, rig drawbacks are calculated by pilot skill. So if you have a friend install a T2, say, trimark but you only have armor rigging 1, you'll suffer a much larger drawback when using the ship. But you can use it. (Note that if instead you were dealing with a T2 weapon rig and the drawback pushed you over on PG then you couldn't fly it without freeing up some grid.)

So when my skill is at zero what does it calculate it as? . Adapt and overcome or become a monkey on an evolution poster.

Pretty simple - you get the complete drawback. Rigging skills simply reduce the drawback, if you have no rigging skill, you have no drawback reduction.
