Heya forum, hope this is an acceptable place to put this.
I have a old monster of a computer as my main rig, and it has served me Ok through the years, but when the time comes that i can't even successfully create a character image it must mean it is time for upgrades.
So: Replacement Desktop. I am not hopeless when it comes to electronics, so self-assembly is an option, but whether it is home-built or off-the-shelf or custom ordered, What do I need to look for in a modern desktop that has the horsepower to run eve today and into the future? I am not terribly wealthy, so a balance of frugality and power has to exist somewhere.
Would rather have a link or real answers then "get komputer dat is gud. them are gud komputer" non-advice.

Your computer is fine. It's the poor quality CCP is delivering which is the problem you're experiencing.

A) budget. B) your current specs. if you have a C2D/C2Q (something on the 6xxx and up) for example you might not need that much of an upgrade. ---

Can't really go wrong with an i5/7 and one of the lower end GTX4x0/GTX5x0 as far as bang for buck goes. Start there and build the rest of the system around that. Make sure and get enough power supply.
But yes, your budget would help.

Yeah get one of the new sandy bridge intel processcors, thay're awesome. Make sure the socket type is LGA 1155. If Eve is your main game, def go nvida over ati since the geforce cards have physx which incarna will supposedly take advantage of.

Somewhere around the mid-line budget but still more than quite decent would be something like this... randomly put together on newegg, just the "tower"...
GIGABYTE GV-R577UD-1GD Radeon HD 5770 1GB -> ~130$ AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz -> ~110$ WDC Black WD1002FAEX 1TB 7200 RPM SATA 6.0Gb/s -> ~90$ MSI 870S-G46 AM3 -> ~85$ OCZ Fatal1ty OCZ550FTY 550W -> ~70$ G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR3 1600 -> ~48$ random halfway decent case -> ~35$ Bulk DVD-burner on SATA -> ~20$ TOTAL : ~588$
Feel free to downgrade the CPU (don't really need it that much), HDD (reusing whatever you have might work fine too) and/or PSU (probably even a 450W PSU will do fine if you don't plan on going SLI mode nor overclocking) if you want a cheaper machine... and feel free to get a different heatsink if you don't like the stock ones provided (if you don't want to overclock and you don't live in a tropical country with no AC on, stock should be fine).
On the slightly higher end, i5 2500 sandybridge and whatever mobo picks your fancy (350-400$ just for those two instead of under 200$), a decently sized SSD (another 100$ or so extra) for the OS/installs drive, 8 GB of RAM (maybe faster RAM too, so 50-100$ extra), a larger PSU (700W should be fine, 800W if you plan on overclocking, so call that an extra 30-70$ or so), at least a 1GB 460 GTX (_NOT_ SE) if not even a 560 GTX Ti (so either ~180$ or ~250$), for around 870-1080$ or thereabouts.
Or, you know, mix and match. Initial machine with 460 GTX would be quite nice and only slightly more expensive.
...
Deffo' need a budget from you. _

Yeah, get one of them AMD processors, they don¦t have the advanced big brother "remote kill switch" technologies the newest intel crap has.
Otherwise stay in the middle price range.
With the current Incarna docking drama, I¦d even advise you to get an SSD drive(next to a normal HDD) to install the EVE client on alongside your OS. And don¦t skimp on the memory. I once thought 4 gig would be enough, but I¦m not that sure anymore. ______________ Mal-¦Appears we got here just in a nick of time. Its a Dell XPS 600, bottom end of its options (i am told it was amazing back in "the day")
Pentium D 3.2ghz, 2gigs ram (max for this mobo i am told)
NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS, picked for cheapness due to having a gift card (replacing the 256MB NVIDIA GeForce 6800 that recently died while trying to run the character creator, funny enough)
Stack of big HDDs i would port over, nothing wrong with those.
And since it is original Dell engineering, the special backwards and upside-down inverted motherboard cannot be swapped with anything newer, and the PSU is only Exactly enough to run it anyhow.
And as for Budget, well.. i am trying to find out the price range for things that are needed. This will determine the amount of time spent eating ramen and avoiding my landlord required to make up the required cash. Maybe $500? if that is the kind of money that would put me in a functional ballpark?

hmm.... akita's seem to be a good option.
also is your 8400 GS AGP or PCI-E? if PCI-E, you could salvage it on the mobo Akita gindicates and transform it in a dedicated physx processor with a few hacks. ---

the 8400 is a PCI-e card however it is one grade under what you need to make the character creator function, a 8600 actually lets the character creator function. You have some options here on what you want to do, I personally dont like the 5770 because its not the best price per performance. You might have better luck with something like a GTX 440 for $70 or 450 for $120. I think you can squeeze another few years out of your Pentium D if you want.
Now if you want to get a new computer to play newer games on higher settings there is an option for that too.
i suggest you look at the guide for price ranges http://www.pcper.com/hwlb -------------

I read that as he meaning to use it alongside the 5770, not instead of it, _just_ as a physx accelerator, not as rendering video card. Extra processing power should never hurt... should it ? _

Buy decent video card like nVidia GTS 250, make sure you have 500 watt or better power supply, and you are good for another two years.
You can still find 9800GT cards around, they are a little cheaper, but I am not sure they are worth the price different when compared to GTS 250.
Don't bother with GT 240.

Edited by: Astroka on 23/04/2011 09:11:50 Akita T's rig looks pretty solid with plenty of bang for your buck, but personally I'd advise (if you're willing to spend a little extra) to get a little more RAM, maybe 6 or 8GB total, since as it is now running the Captain's Quarters, Chrome, and Windows 7, plus whatever background tasks are going on uses roughly 3GB on my computer. No telling how much full-fledged Incarna will use.
Also, for $20 you could upgrade the video card to a GTX 550 Ti, which offers a (from what I've seen) ~20% performance increase over the 5770. Buying it from EVGA's website will get you one factory OC'd with a three-year parts and labor warranty, which can be extended by registering it online.
Edited for clarity and such.
