I am bored and just wondering if I am missing out on any new sci-fi shows as years ago there used always be odd ones here and there but can only currently think of 3 being stargate universe, v 2009 and doctor who. I am not here to debate the sci-fi merits of these shows just wondeirng if any others I a missing out on from around the globe. ----------------------------------------- View The North Star! That's all of them. Scifi has been phased out in favor of 'reality' TV, much like a lot of other genres and programming (remember when MTV actually played music?). SGU is already cancelled and V is following soon - The BBC might follow suit soon by dropping Dr Who, since i heard rumors of the ratings dropping rather quickly at the moment and we all know the BBC prefers snooker over pretty much anything else.
I don't think you can expect anything new scifi on the TV untill the 50th Star Trek anniversary in a few years. I don't see anything else coming along unless a game developer decides their game is TV worthy (mainly thinking of Blizzard and Bioware here, though CCP should take advantage of the scifi void while they can).

I was kinda hoping that wasn't mentioned. Aside from that i thought it was rather bad... Somehow it's trying to hard, even though it has an interesting premise.

It's technically scifi, but there's a distinct lack of series involving anything other than "staying on Earth all the time".
Again a matter of reality TV being incredibly cheap to make, they usually make a huge profit even if they flop, whereas scifi shows are always a huge risk.

yep thats what I am thinking its prety bad since actually making space ship shows should be cheaper than ever with advances in cgi, even doctor who one of my favourite sci fi shows really is not space based they often (mostly) fall back on what you mentioned above. ----------------------------------------- View The North Star! V 2009 is as good as canned (I don't see it getting a new season), Stargate Universe is also almost certainly gone (that's a mild way of saying no chance in hell they'll get another season), and Dr. Who is far more fantasy than science (still quite entertaining, don't get me wrong).
Fringe, I suppose it's ok-ish, but not exactly what I'd call sci-fi (like I wouldn't exactly call X-files sci-fi either), but AT LEAST they are almost certain to get another season, and it's somewhat passable.
For a brief moment, we also had Caprica, but, while it started decently, it was getting too moralistic and downright boring fast, and I can't say I'll miss it much. There's a rumoured "interquel" which would follow a young Adama in the first Cylon wars, but no idea on its status, and quite frankly, I fully expect it to become "meh" rather fast too.
Sanctuary is even less sci-fi than Fringe, still somewhat entertaining though (but they've been resorting to a bit too many deus ex machinas lately, for my taste anyway). And the fact they got "that actress" from Caprica onboard before the break is like asking for Murphy to manifest.
Eureka (the slightly more sci than fi) and its later crossover counterpart Warehouse 13 (a lot more fi than sci) were nice in a popcornish fashion, but I half expected them to devolve into comedy routines almost every episode, so the "seriousness factor" was even lower than Dr. Who (and that's saying something).
Heroes ? When it finally ended, I was actually relieved. And it would be a big stretch of the imagination to consider giving it a spot in the "vaguely sci-fi" category.
Flash Forward ? Not exactly all that sci-fi either, I honestly could not bring myself to even watch the only season they got out of it.
Defying Gravity ? It showed _some_ promise, then it promptly folded after basically half a season, with the long-term plotlines revealed for the few fans only in a very condensed text dump.
Outcasts barely made it to episode 8 (probably intended that way from the start though, haven't looked much into it)... couldn't bring myself to watch it yet (especially after the not so favourable reviews), but, eh, you never know.
Not a very impressive lineup for sci-fi in the recent past, even scrounging together a lot of shows that only borderline qualify as "sort of sci-fi"...

I think you'd be suprised by it akita but the first episode really let it down, the 2nd epsidoe is ok (or it seemed at time but I'd just got over watching the dreadful episode 1) from epsiode 3 its ok and later episodes get even better. I'd say its not really that great overall though just good compared to what was out there at the time which is'nt alot. ----------------------------------------- View The North Star!
I pretty much watched it for John Noble and (the promise of) Leonard Nimoy. And then they screwed me out of the latter by only showing him for literally 12 seconds at the very end of the season.
I mean SGU didn't have what made SG-1 and SGA so good, they tried to make it some kind of reality tv show....

Sci Fi always has a problem in that it is essentially niche entertainment to begin with.
Look at what's popular. 3.5 Men or whatever that Charlie Sheen was on. Some standard sit com. That's what people watch and it's relatively cheap to make.
The original Battlestar Galactica was canceled simply because it cost to much to make. It had good ratings but it was to expensive and - Hollywood has always been in the business of making money - it's just that every now and again they let something great slip through - but most of it IS crap.
For Crusader, the follow on to B5, what killed it was that it was on the wrong network. TBS would show a Crusader episode - people would change the channel to watch it - and then - change it back to something else when it was over. The programming people want to get someone watching and keep them on their channel all night.
Another thing that has hurt Sci Fi - is that since it's already a niche genre - a lot of the liberal writers use it to promote their own political agenda's - which alienates the people who don't agree with those agenda's - and kills the show.
Now - the whole BSG/SG:U/Caprica set of shows also suffered from Whedonistis. The writers, trying to imitate Joss Whedon - would pull some stunt on the show specifically designed to shock the audience ... which worked the first half dozen times they did it - but - applied to often it begins to produce nothing but this -> . There is some alleged enemy they're supposedly fighting but - most of what the show is about is the drama-rama between the characters. Eventually, the audience goes "Oh - Bull ****." and then loses interest in the show.
I tell you, I never thought I'd be nostalgic for SG: Atlantis but ... that day has long since come and gone. I was flipping around the channels last night and came across SG:SG1 and I was like "Oh Cool!" but could only stay awake through the first of the two shows they had on since it started at 1 a.m. and I was falling asleep.
Personally, I'd be happy right now if they just started showing re-runs of old shows. Most of the new stuff they've come out with has been politically correct horse **** and inter character drama-rama.

Macross Frontier (huge spaceships and mecha-starfightero-airplanes plus the occasional annoying singer... or two) Mobile Suit Gundam 00 (mecha-suits and the occasional spaceship, pretty decent overall even if a bit corny at times) Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann (from katana to tiny mecha to larger mecha to land ship that can fly to the moon which is a spaceship and it gets even more outrageous later on, you are not allowed to miss it) Darker Than Black (not spaceships, but quite sci-fi, also can be very, well, you guessed it, dark at times) And since you mentioned Cowboy Beebop, a tiny association bleeped and you get Gun X Sword (mecha + western) which was not bad Outlaw Star came out around that time, and, you guessed it, spaceship ! Sort of. I think. At least featured occasionally or something. From what I hear. Haven't seen it YET, but heard a lot about it. Ok, not that much. Meh. Crest of the Stars and then Banner of the Stars - first also came out pretty much around the time Cowboy Beebop did too... and as you can guess from the name it's sufficiently about spaceships (and the obviously annoying crews, because, hey, Japan seems to not be immune to Incarna either)... speaking of spaceships though... Legend of Galactic Heroes (if you have the PATIENCE to watch it all given the quite dated animation style... and if your head doesn't explode from the sheer number of named characters that also mostly end up dead anyway) Bokurano (pretty creepy not quite mecha, not seen enough of it to really tell you what the heck's going on there, but I'd put it somewhere around NGE)... speaking of which... Neon Genesis Evangelion (hooray for the totally dysfunctional band of utter weirdo not really mecha pilots that... oh, you know what's it about - oh, and they're doing a pseudoremake, shoving all of it in 3 feature-length movies, 2 are out, 3rd not yet) and speaking of weird sci-fi-ish stuff, Elfen Lied and also Serial Experiments Lain.
Granted, not that many of them focused strictly on spaceships, but giant mecha or space-worthy fighters or stuff like that should count to some degree, and, eh... _

After seeing her for 10 seasons in SG1 i just can't take her seriously if she's playing a scientist in another scifi series than Stargate. It ruined Sanctuary for me really, even though i was initially interested in it because of her involvement. That, and one actor can deliver awesome performances but if the cast around her isn't even reaching gradeschool level of performances the series really falls flat.
On that note, SGU has been cancelled last year. They're finishing season 2 but after that it's off the air. As Toshiro mentioned about BSG, SGU also costs too much to make compared to the ratings it's getting - The biggest reason for it being cancelled. Having a very slow (and overly pretentious and BSG-like) first season didn't help matters, even if the second season picked up the pace dramatically.

Edited by: Whitehound on 24/04/2011 10:57:24 It seems as if there is a trend towards more fantasy series currently. At least with all good Sci-Fi series having run out or running out.
The Legend of the Seeker is running for a while now and offers some entertainment value. Merlin is another, but I cannot watch it as it bores me too quickly. Camelot is new and may have some good entertainment value. If the acting stays as good as the pilot then it is going to be a good series. Game of Thrones could possibly rule them all, which is not hard to do. The pilot looked good and gory. It reminded me somewhat of WoW - not that I play WoW, but Hollywood would be daft if they did not exploit the WoW generation and this one could well be it. With realms, dire wolfs, walkers, and stuff-one-never-heard-about.
Unless news arrives about new Sci-Fi on the horizon does one have to settle with fantasy.
Warehouse 13 does not fall into any of this, but it, too, has got its entertainment value.
This only for a contrast. --
