Now that was a decent game.
Too bad the developers never followed through and gave a somewhat crappy online experience.
Anyone ever play it?

Freelancer was awesome. I really enjoy going out and exploring all the border worlds after the storyline finished.
Its a shame they didn't make the second one

Still have a copy bumping around somewhere... Loved that game, probably why I love EVE so much.

Freespace 2 was awesome. I hoped Black Prophecy would be the new Freespace but though a decent free game it alas is not.

i remember freelancer. i played on freelancer universe server, being a carebear. flew all over the place using my nuetral to everyone mod to rake in huge moneys selling arms to Malta and then taking Cardimine to Manhatten. the silly pirates out in the border worlds couldn't catch me unless i wanted to be caught, in which case i always had my buddy in a battleship sitting around making popcorn. eventually the pirates were scared of that battleship enough we actually got a convoy of transports through with gigantic loads of arms through to Malta. but, some idiot flying one of the transports was not clear that we had to use jump holes to get back to Manhat, and he flew right into a police gate camp with a couple hundred thousand units of cardimine in his hold.
the only time i was ever killed by a player was when i was running Boron from Cambridge to New Berlin. this guy in a capital ship sniped me in that yellow cloud system, outside the IMG station. i was never any good at dogfights anyways.
but yeah, if i didn't have eve, i'd get in touch with all my eve buddies somehow and get them on that old Freelancer Universe server. it wouldn't be EVE, but it would be better than nothing.

Freelancer was a fun game, but it biggest downside was its crappy physics (same as in EVE). One can only hope someone actually makes a space game not using the "air plane, but in space" model Until that time ant new games in this genere can only offer an interesting story over the other old ones. And perhaps eye candy for thoose weak of mind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Well Frontier and First Encounter had "correct" physics and let me tell you, it isn't compatible with good dogfight game-play. In Frontier my technique for killing pirate ships was to load up with plenty of shields and then set the autopilot onto them and ram them to death. Dogfights were next to impossible, or so annoying they weren't worth the aggro.
Freelancer was excellent in terms of flight model for dog-fighting. It was actually good fun (and still good fun with the Cyborg Joystick).
The only trouble with this game and games since is that they generally have a "jump-gate" mentality (presumably to keep order in their Universes). I hate jump-gates. The immersion is totally lost for me when I can't orbit a planet (as in Eve, where planets are cardboard cut-outs), or when the Universe is small and finite (as in X2/3 and Eve). All in all, the only true space sim I've ever played that had great combat as well was the original Elite. I still don't believe it's been bettered, or will be bettered for some time to come. Combat in Freelancer was better I think, but the rest of the game was crap in comparison.
Just imho.

I am surprised no one mentioned the I-War games. Realistic, yet brutal use of physics in space.
The ending of I-War 2 also left a lot of open questions and for a long time I had opened for a sequel, or at least an addon.

Newtonian physics don't make for entertaining PvP space battles and usually degenerate into joust like strafing runs and over reliance on missiles as its almost impossible to hit anything with gunfire.
So while it sounds like a nerdgasm its actually pretty **** and airplanes in space is the best way of doing it.

Play games were dog fights do not take place in space? ;)
Let space games be about space fights, that really should be different then air planes. Not many that makes space games tho, since they just make air planes in space games becuase its familiar and easy.

Do not agree. Its all about how you implement it. Besides who made you absolute judge over what is entertaining and not?
I rather take a dose of real space gameplay then planes in space. If I wannt play a plane game, I play a plane game. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

EVE and other space combat games are scifi fiction so with artistic embellishment for entertainment. Though It would be nice if some people did an open source space combat simulator. First generation ships would be based on current tech, no matter how expensive to manufacture and get into space. Then you could have higher generation ships based on future tech. I am not a scientist but I would assume squishy humans would not be on combat platforms that need to pull high g's.

what, i'm the only one with a freelancer story that was evelike? as in online, "emergent", and sounds like something that would happen in eve?
Freelancer was a great game because the online versions allowed for random PVP encounters like that. which reminds me for some reason of the cut+paste of the NPC's dialog. ever try hailing an npc ship with high standings? listen for the parts where they mention points of origin and destination, its hilarious!

I loved freelancer, and it is definatly the reason I got into EVE that is for true. I honestly didn't get that far in the story because once I found out about online play I was lost in my cardi smuggling trips and fighting with the servers player formed police patrols.
I would love to still play freelancer but my computer doesn't seem to appreciate the awesomeness that it is.

I dusted off X3 Terran Whatsit last night to see how it plays. Still pretty good (apart from the star gates - I hate star gates!).
What I don't understand is why there's an absence of 3d space games in the genre, apart from these few. Are they really such bad business for studios?
