Rails need to be changed to work like blasters - facemelting power and short range.
Blasters would be left with their niche - close encounters and solo or very small gang work.
Gallente ships would have the mid range covered with rails. With the extra dps they'll be competitive with AC/pulse lasers.
For sniper work caldari ships would still work fine. They keep complaining that the grid is too small.
Can't go wrong.

^^^rails suck- that's my point. By changing them to be like blasters - high damage shortest range they would be good. They need to have the damage of tachyons - then they'd rock.

That would defeat the purpose of the railgun, then. AC's and Blasters are the short range turrets, while Rails and Arty fill the long range need. There is no reason to have a 3rd short range option.

Not the same. ACs for both short and long range, arties for volley.

Rails are already the shortest range sniper weapons (on non-Caldari ships, at least), but they're also the lowest damaging. Fixing the damage would help Gallente but break Caldari.

wrong, Rails are the second highest range weapons for sniping, on on caldary boats a tad better then arty.

The problem with Hybrids is that they exist and CCP is adamant about keeping things to a particular flavor or style.
Honestly, there is no reason every ship in EvE shouldn't be designed to use Projectiles, Hybrids, or Lasers. But in the name of flavor and Circle Balancing, they all remain.

Buff rails so they have the best dps, rof, alpha, range and tracking in the game well above all other turrets.
(But then remove the ammo)

We have 3 long range turret weapons - Beams, Arty and rails.
Beams: - Highest DPS - 2nd Highest Alpha ( middle of the road between Rails and Arty ) - Highest Tracking (50% over arty) - Use quite a bit of cap
Artillery: - Lowest DPS - Highest Alpha ( by *far* ) - Lowest tracking - Use no cap
Rails: - 2nd Highest DPS ( *very* close to arty dps - low end) - Lowest Alpha - 2nd Highest tracking ( *very* close to arty tracking - low end) - Uses quite a bit of cap. Almost the same as lasers
So... rails are almost equal to the bad points of artillery, using almost as much cap as lasers and have a alpha lower than anything.

I think the fix to rails is just to make them fire faster. Sort of like long range autocannons if you will but less damage than autos of course. This would keep their niche as well as make them viable weapons.

Why do you assume it's a troll thread?
Ac's have the falloff, pulse have 45km optimal with t2 ammo. Blasters have highest dps at 5 km(or w/e range)
Blasters will not be changed sufficiently to be effective in fleets - you want mid range, 10-30km as the minimum , and CCP likes their uniqueness.
Long range guns : lasers are highest DPS(tachyons have higher dps than 800mm AC's actually), artilleries have highest alpha, rails just suck. Also when you compare rails with the other long range guns - they have the longest optimal. Which is kinda opposite of blasters.
I'm merely suggesting that their dps gets kicked up to the DPS a tachyon has. I'm suggesting that to compensate their optimal gets cut from 36 down to 24 km with antimatter(this way the rokh would have 36 km optimal with antimatter after it's bonus).
This way gallente ships would be able to participate in larger gangs without sacrificing range or dps - they'd just be using long range guns instead of the short range which amarr and minmatar would be using.
Face it - it's been awhile and blasters haven't been "fixed" . No one even can think of a fix without turning the blasters into AC or pulse. Maybe fixing rails would put more hybrid hulls in space which is what we all want and need.

Tachyons are quite literally in a category of their own. If you want to compare PRACTICAL long-range weaponry, look at mega beams. Those are what actually get used outside of lol-PvE.

There's little enough difference between tachyon and megabeam eft says a tach with MF gives you 46 megabeam 42 DPS.*
You also have to consider lasers, on top of the highest DPS have insta switch ammo and also their ammo is crystals while rails have the rounds...
But yeah you're right - tachyons are in a league of their own - I'd be happy though if rails had 44 dps* and shortest optimal of the long range guns. Right now with antimatter they have barely 36 DPS* per gun, which might have made sense at one time but not anymore.
* level 5 skills , no damage mods from ships or modules.

Try fitting 425mm rails. Same issue only the vindicator and the Kronos can fit them and anything else.. --------------------------------------------

If its 60km-100km sniping, rail boats are the absolute best ship to choose from, reaching 650-900 dps in this range.
Gila is sadly better then Ishtar tho. But thats the only thing rail should be good at anyways. sniping.
gallente ships are fine really. as long as you use it in the correct situation.

you can fit 7 425's, mwd, two plates and a med cap booster on a mega with no implants and awu 4. cpu starts to get tight, but nothing you can't work around.

Hyperion - the ship with 8 guns and 25% bonus to damage, 4 federation MFS, and navy ammo gets 780 dps at 36 km.
Similarly fitted abaddon with megabeams gets 904 dps. With tachyons it would get 977
I'm merely suggesting that rails get slightly better dps than megabeams since they use ammo, and since that ammo is the same as the one blasters use and blasters are the highest dps guns.
P.S. As far as fitting requirements - the ship that was meant for rails - the rokh cannot fit a full rack of 425 IIs without fitting mods.
PPS. a vindicator with 37.5% bonus to DPS , 4 fed navy MFS, 8 425s II, navy ammo gets 858 DPS(at 36km optimal) - that's lower than the abaddon with megabeams similarly fitted. I would really love to see your fit for sniping BS with rails with 650-900 DPS in the 60-100km range.

Im talking 60-120km sniping range. Not multifrequency and super wierd fittings. plus dominix is a t1. and its not an abaddon
Hyperion is an active tanked ship. Dont fly it for stuff its not designed for, as megathron is used otherwise.
