yeah ok I like SoaSE. it's a great game and I played it some.
then people told me about Sword of the Stars.
and I tried it.
and ended up playing like 12 hours straight on the first run.
I also learned that the "random" tech tree of the game is awesome, till you end up with no AI virus. ---

I hated the random tech tree. Just annoys me.
I want to be forced to learn techs because the other player has tech i need to counter, not because I randomly cant learn the tech.

SotS is possibly the first mainstream 4X that diverged in concept and opted instead to streamline gameplay in favour of complexities. What they did was to reduce planetary micromanagement to the macro level, strengthened the flavour with genuinely unique races and technologies and made the ship-to-ship battles more involved; by implementing arcs, varying weapon mountings, destroyable weapon mounts & section and modular sections for each ship.
This made the game very, very strong in repeat gameplay.
Check out - http://sots.rorschach.net/
Its a wiki for SoTS run by their dev. Without the info from this site, you'd be left scratching your head with regard to the finer points of races's ship and weapon stats.
MoO/GalCiv playstyle differs from SotS. However, if you want to directly compare them, I would just say that you won't get bogged down with complexities as the game progress. SoTS plays like chess and it keeps you focused.

mix real-time combat of Homeworld (creators were part of the company that created homeworld: cataclysm), with turn-based MoO2' empire management.
MoO2 is still better, altho this one is more "recent" (altho from 2006), so support is a bit better. you can even play online and you can command the game AI to control everything when you logout. ---

Haven't played the game - know nothing about it - but as to marathon gaming ...
Once upon a time I played Civ for 15 hours straight ... just one more turn ... just one more turn ... and completely lost track of the time. I thought it was about midnight and figured I'd better get to sleep so I could get some rest before going to work the next day ... looked up ... and had about half an hour to get to work. Just got up, got in my car and left. No sleep for me that day.
When I came home that night - I uninstalled the game ... It wasn't so much the marathon session (I've done worse) - it was not having any idea I'd played that long ...

ok, i see why you like the game!
nothing like seeing a fleet of your DN's rolling up to a planet and they have a few dns and like 40 cruisers and you just steam them in the face!
I done what you did, got into it then just went epic, around 11 hours till i noticed i had things to do! :D
i dont like ho when you load a game the AI changes its stance though!
Even though i am doing ok i am still ranked last lol, lucky i have an allaince with the AI that is #1 :)

Dude I feel you there. My darkest time was a Medieval Total War 2 marathon. I quite literally played for 30 hours, with a 6 hour sleep in between sessions . Had nothing to do, had already wasted countless hours of my life on that game, but was bored so reinstalled it. I then proceeded to play an entire campaign on hard, from start to world domination as the British. Was obscene. Just one more turn, one more battle, on more conquest. I don't think I've ever been so disgusted with myself but it was epic. Having all the history fresh in mind was incredible, I actually felt like the ruler. Gave a whole new side to vendettas and past events too. Damn Russians! I then uninstalled it.
About a week ago I fired it back up as I got nostalgic, but thankfully I think that marathon killed it for me/cured me depending on how you look at it .
