Edited by: cyndrogen on 27/04/2011 15:27:46 Ok,
How about allowing the players to name nullsec systems. While cv-gf64268$);; is very "interesting" for a null system it does not really make it very easy to remember.
The system name could possibly be bought via plex or through sovereign mechanics and I would love to hear suggestions ... The name can also be reclaimed by other players by capturing the territory perhaps.
No profanity allowed obviously. Also no trademark names like "Sony " .
Discuss.
I'm sick and tired of seeing system names that are named by a script.

This has been brought up before, and the common problem is that you have to go one of two ways:
1. Accept stupid names like "MyLeftTit" 2. Have CCP waste valuable time approving all names before they're added to the database.
Since neither of those seems like a good choice to me, I support choice three.

Edited by: SXmasteraccount on 27/04/2011 16:13:05 I don't support this as a veteran from beta. Those names aren't that hard to remember and the names already have established identities to the systems with many memories.
HED-GP and EC-P8R for example are well known for their cluster**** into 0.0 systems.
5ZZX and X-7 is that Mediocre Mordu's Legion NPC space in Nullsec that is a perfect first time 0.0 homebase for newer players.
I1Y... I can keep going, but I think I've made my point. I also did not look at a map, these names are burned into memory ;)
Now systems are very different from character names and that is a very different arguement for a very different thread.

This kind of names (five alphanumeric characters with a dash) seems to be a standard in EVE for naming newly discovered solar systems. After some time they can receive a proper name. For example, CMS-17 → Pator.
Who are the capsuleers to name the systems? This million-sized bunch of semi-immortals doesn't have any real political power in New Eden. ───────────────── <3 logistics |

The confusion it would cause would make this impractical.
And you already can name stations in null, I think that's good enough.

The drone regions were named in such manner. The names they have today are not the original names when they went live, the majority sov holders at a certain time got the right to work on names for them. (CCP approved).
I think it would be good as a reward, perhaps for longtime holding of a system, say a corp holds it a year they can request a name for it.

Finally someone with intelligence in this thread. I think that time is a big factor, maybe also numbers? You need at least XXXX number of players in said alliance OR hold it for a year etc etc. Not many people can pull it off and besides it's not like there are an infinite amount of nullsec systems! There is a fixed quantity available and it's not like more then 5 or 10 names would be requested each month.
I would even have tournaments for "naming the system" at the end of the month winners get to name the system.
The nay sayers go troll Charlie Sheens closet.

Indeed, Station names are a Joke at times, I'm no big role player, but a station called "love shack" or similar is funny only once. |

Have a set of pre-approved names that soverign holders of a set time or more can pick from a list.

Yes, they are. That would be the point.

Which is pretty pointless really. Just name them all if there's a list.

I am very much against the idea that system names would change often. It'd not only cause unnecessary confusion but detract from the building history of certain well known systems, a point already raised.
You could argue that it's allowed to be changed once from the alpha-numerical. Not so bad an idea but who gets to choose? How long do you have to be there? A huge swathe of systems change hands frequently, often back and forth between coalitions. What kind of moderation will there be? Is it just profanity or 'sounds like' profanity also? Or euphemism? Or very un-eve sounding names? Can places be based on real world locations? I think a lot of people would disagree with one, some or all of those being allowed...
Personally, all in all, I like the way in which 0.0 has a different naming system. The generated names sound cold and distant :)

The threshold for naming should be quite high:
- Alliance must hold sov for 6 months
- System must have average alliance population greater than N -- this threshold should be fairly high. Only places where people actually live should get a name.
- If Sov is lost, system keeps name
- New sov-holder can request a rename once they meet conditions 1&2
- All names are subject to CCP approval.
For NPC null, CCP could start assigning names to systems once they reach a certain metric (kills, NPC kills, jumps, etc.) with the condition that Poitot remains the only named system in Syndicate.
