Here is the news = http://news.discovery.com/space/search-for-et-suspended.html
So i guess no more data crunching , the project always fasinated me and in the past i have been crunching data myself
Its a shame to see this project putted on hold , as i believe that most of us curious people really want to get an answer on some questions like = Where the hell is everyone in space ? , there surelly must be other advanced civilisations out there.
So look like we wont be finding them any soon.
Discuss guys !!

What needed fixing? He simply posted a URL which smart people have Linkification / Your own browsers equivalent for. Geeze, I hate presumptuous people who think people feel grateful for fixing things for them!

The question would be what is really going on behind the scenes, than the official reasons given.
If they cannot fully censure SETI for whistleblowing (in case they find something, or they may already did), then shutting it down would be the best recourse. The other explanation is of course, it was a pointless endeavour to begin with and as things come to a close, they don't see a point in wasting away monies to keep up the public facade.
They're already here. The unexplained evidences are overwhelming when you connect all the dots together. Our technology is advancing at such a pace that there will come to a point that they can no longer hide/suppress information from the public as easily as they would in the past. Techniques like the HB Gary's sock puppetry may prove useful in the short term, but essentially it's battling a technology virus. It will not win the war.
Rambling a little, don't you find it as funny that India's Chandrayaan-1 produced a few new moon discoveries, where NASA - since the 1960's (purpotedly) know nothing about. NASA's lead was huge, and failing basic research such as the above, one can point to several interesting conclusions. With other notable countries boosting their space projects, space is about to get crowded and no single nation can claim stranglehold to the information it generates. As such, control of these informations will be challenging.

hasn't it been determined that after a few light years from a point source (Earth) that EM radiation kind of discombobulates into a incoherent mess?

Edited by: Toshiro GreyHawk on 28/04/2011 11:28:08 --- Uh ... a lot of what I said below is old data. Apparently they had an array they were using that they can't fund any more - which is different than what they were doing when I was doing it. My comments below were based on that.
-----
There's a number of ways they can get signals from extreme range - that's why they used really big telescopes. The real problem is that most of the signals they get are from Earth and they have to sort through that. What they really need is receivers out in space but ... that's not going to happen. The big dishes they have here - they are piggy backing on. They have one of their devices fixed to the dish and just pick up whatever is in the direction someone else is paying the telescope to look at.
Yeah it's to bad the funding dried up.
Me and some of my buddies were doing that for a while as a group and with all of us being tech guys we had a number of systems running the software. One of the things that was fun was getting the Unix and Windows systems to pass the data through each other.
Sadly I sacrificed some of my older systems to that effort by running them in to hot a room. It wasn't that bad but running those things 24/7 the way I was ... they started dropping off and I lost a number of them. Of course ... they were so old they weren't worth fixing anyway so ... *shrug* ... it didn't really matter. It's still funny sometimes to go out and turn on one of those systems that survived and see that old SETI screen saver pop up ... Of course ... it's the old system so it's useless now. I never made the transition to the new system ... so that was the end of that.
Hopefully they'll get it started back up but ... the trouble with putting things on pause like that - is you're not going to get a lot of the people who were doing it back. Once they stop ... *shrug* ...
Of course - that's always the problem with volunteer efforts. People will do it for a while ... and then they quit.
Still, for it's day - it was a really cool project and fun to be part of.

aliens would only look like that if they evolved on earth. note: two eyes, two nostrils, one mouth, from top to bottom. the thing looks HUMAN almost. given the several other theorized forms that tool using intelligent life might take, the probablity of encountering an ET that looks so similar is rather small, even before you factor in the chance of encoutering ET at all.
take the varieties of life that in another set of circumstances might have grown a brain, ants and bees for example. the level of organization their nests show is rivaled only by the organization in human social systems. they build with no hands, showing that theoritically, ET might not have hands. ET might not have a skeleton!
i do think that there's ET out there, but he probably hasnt come here yet. what i'm scared of most is that we live in David Brin's Uplift universe, where we're already billions of years behind the rest of the universe. Linkage

You're assuming humans evolved from single cell organisms billions of years ago ... on Earth ;) Consider the alternative theory, we're splinters of something else out there .. and thus, there will be certain similarities.

true, exogenesis is possible, but assuming the first life on earth did come from elsewhere, look at how life adapted to the many enviroments we have here. even earthbound life does not follow the two eyes two nostrils one mouth in that order rule.
given the variety that developed on earth, i think it's reasonable to assume that developed in different gravity, different atmosphere, and possibly even different solar radiation affecting the DNA would be, different!
the face rule stands. crops circles have been proven fakes in the past and i'm rather sure that the examples linked are also fakes, mostly because the face derived from them seems simian, if not human.

There are several things about humans which suggest genetic manipulation. Primates have muscle 3 times stronger than ours, our 23'rd chromosome is clearly two halves stuck together, instead of us having 24 like other creatures on Earth. The missing link. 'junk DNA', etc. Perhaps the reason it's a big secret is because we are the result of genetic tinkering, and they're just keeping an eye on their pet project. All the religious texts about lights in the sky and angels just being primitive man making sense of their presence.
But i do believe the humanoid shape would be come across naturally via evolution fairly often. Evolution doesn't always go for the most bizarre things, it usually goes the simplest route, and the variables for evolution would be pretty much the same for all land dwelling creatures. 2 organs dedicated to each of the various senses, 2 limbs for movement, and 2 for object manipulation. What would be the good in having a 3rd of any of those things? Plus, nature not only likes simplicity but symmetry.

this is intresting, and a lot harder data than the usual stuff the ET crowd comes up with. could you please provide links to the places that support that position? i admit i don't know very much about genetics.
i'm skeptical of the whole "angels are aliens" line, based on my belief that an omnipotent God can exist in this universe of science. however, we are not allowed to get any deeper into this line due to the forum rules concerning religion. i suggest we not go any further so this thread does not get locked.

Just do a google search for "chromosome fusion". We're the only living thing on Earth to have it happen, and it remains unexplained.

i hate it when people say 'just google it', it makes it hard to nitpick the source.
basicly, from what i've gathered is:
1, humans have a fused chromosome.
2, the only organisims that have a fused chromosome besides us are ones we've genegeneered ergo: 3, humans must be genegeneered.
logically sound barbara arguement, but it only shows that someone must have meddled, not whether they were ET or divine. if true, the only theory this disproves is evolution.

the first land based form that was tried on earth was insect. the alternating tripod movement method originated underwater where life is thought to have originated and was easily applied to land. however, this bodytype was limited to exoskeletons, which were limited to a very specific method of breathing. this method was unable to sustain large critters after the oxygen content fell, forcing all exoskeleton based creatures to adapt and shrink.
lets do some revisionist history here. assume that the oxygen content did not drop and six foot scorpions were still the dominant predators. they've had pincers from the start, provided that a random mutation allows tool use, and social behavior...
some more revisionist history! take the humble octopus. the thing is probably the smartest thing in the water, however, they are solitary creatures that have short life spans. their intelligence and awesome graspers can't be used to build civilization because there's no accumulated knowledge and the life span is too short to get any personal knowledge. if they somehow were able to live ten years longer and had nuturing mothers, coastal defenses might not just be pointed at ships.
both these life forms have viable body types for civilization, but their behaviour prevents them from building anything. the only reason we are not in their positions is because of our nurturing relationships with the next generation, allowing accumulated knowledge.
