Mindstar, otherwise forever known to me as Failstar for his rollout of this tournament, blew it big time with the banning rule, but not many people have commented on the other way in which he blew it big time.
It has been commented already that this is an unfortunate rule because it shrinks the size of the tournament for players, in fact I believe the numbers are that almost 225 fewer people will be able to compete now, because of that rule. There are some other factors that need to be noticed in order to really see how bad this rule is.
Mindstar commented that this tournament has "more fights" than other tournaments, I believe the number was 144, up from 128. He then uses that to base his argument that he has "expanded" the tournament. Firstly, shrinking the teams by half for the first half of the tournament is not an expansion.
Second, and most important, the 5 man teams are not televised, or even recorded. So in effect, a large chunk of those 144 matches will never been seen by anyone except the tiny little teams that get to compete. How is this an intelligent move? You shrunk the size of the teams, then removed them from viewing. In effect, they don't exist.
Right there is the secret. They don't exist to the public. For most people outside of the tournament, all they will see are the group rounds, with the 10 man fleets. They will not notice that there were all these stupid 5 man teams, which allows Mindstar to get away with this stupid rule. I am of the opinion that they are not televising these early pre qual rounds because they know it will be lame, and frustrating to people to limit the scope of the tournament so. All people will notice at the end is that there were a lot less matches than there were last year.
So congrats, CCP. You shrank the tournament by over 200 people, then removed about 64 matches from being even televised, in effect hiding your poor decisions.
Change is good. Change just to have change is stupid. This is a stupid change. I see no reason why we need or even want a small 5 man team rule. We loved the big 10 man fleets, and we definitely wanted them televised.

Agreed. I found it odd that this tournament was said to be "expanded" even though there are fewer pilots and fewer broadcasted matches.
Had there not been the ridiculous banning farce (and the corresponding outcry) I would think that the new tournament format would have generated more rage. As it is, I guess most people are happy to have righted one wrong (banning) and are content to cope with the lame format changes.
Mindstar, stop trying to reinvent the wheel. Tournament observers like to watch the tournament matches. The more the better. Tournament competitors like to compete. Again, the more often, the better.
Additionally, the 5-pilot matches will be extraodinarily volatile, with many matches being decided by first jams and first damps, which are essentially coin flips (yes, I know dampening isn't chance based, but even with identical lock speeds, one ship will still get first damps on another). This pushes the matches further towards being determined by luck rather than skill. The 5-man matches are a terrible idea.

Personally, I like the idea of the 5 man rounds, though I do wish they were being televised . . .
but aside from my personal feelings, your numbers are wrong
AT8 Round 1, 64 teams competing 32 matches Round 2, 64 teams competing 32 matches Round 3, 32 teams competing 16 matches Round 4, 16 teams competing 8 matches Round 5, 8 teams competing 4 matches Round 6, 4 teams competing 2 matches Round 7, 2 teams competing 1 match
32+32+16+8+4+2+1= 95 not 128
AT9 Round 1, 64 teams competing 32 untelevised matches Round 2, 64 teams competing 32 untelevised matches Round 3, 32 teams competing 16 matches Round 4, 32 teams competing 16 matches Round 5, 32 teams competing 16 matches Round 6, 32 teams competing 16 matches Round 7, 16 teams competing 8 matches Round 8, 8 teams competing 4 matches Round 9, 4 teams competing 2 matches Round 10, 2 teams competing 1 match
16*4+8+4+2+1 = 79 matches with an additional 64 untelevised.
Now considering that each match can have 20 unique people who have not been in their respective tournament before (10 for the AT9 pre qualifiers) thats a theoretical maximum of 1900 people for AT8 and 2220 for AT9
Now of course these numbers are not at all realistic because the same people are usually fielded multiple times, but still; your numbers are wrong.

I personally think the 5 man rule will make for awesome matches at least for watching. I say 'will' because I choose to live it the futile dream that the fact that they won't be uploaded on YouTube afterwards is just some misunderstanding spawned from ambiguous answers. I feel like this sort of conversation was had before almost every tournament, although this time around it seems quite bad...

To be honest the 5 man teams will be more fun to watch than the ten man teams. Too bad they won't be televised.

Don't understand why they couldn't record the matchs and put them on you tube with out the point less extra commentary of Eve TV.
Text commentary is just fine with me. Might even give someone the time to do some useful analysis of tactics.

ccp seems to think doing less work, offering less content is the success of the tournament
nothing but isd and ccp volunteers wanting to do less work.

The 5 man matches are fun when you are involved with a team at all with ship types or an alternate.
There should be recordings of them, and put on youtube though.

All i got to say is "CRY ON LITTLE CAREBEAR" . Small gang warfare ftw. You carebears have been whining since the nano days. ccp made the 0.0 gate larger for you so you could get through. They slowed everything down so you low skill noobs could use drakes and fly bc's effectively. Everythiung they have done is to make the learning curve smaller because stupid people have money to spend on this game too. Look 30 on 30 is no more than two fc's fighting each other with a bunch of clueless b a s t a r d s pushing f-1. watch outbreak, aggravated assault, ursha khan . those are your skilled low number pvpers. they will be your winners this years.

Televise the lot:
Qualifying Round 1 (weekend 1) - 56 new entrants / lowest seeded entrants
Qualifying Round 2 (weekend 2) - 28 winners from QR1 + 28 medium seeded alliances
Group Stages - 28 winners from QR2 + 4 highest seeded alliances
(Continue as is from here)
4 + 28 + 56 = 88 alliance able to compete

I think the 5 man rounds are great fun. Well I would they were fun. Since they weren't recorded (if not by a few of the players themselves) I can't really say.
Watching a bunch of stats on a site (where's the quality control on that btw Loxy, not your standards there it seems) just isn't any fun, meaning I really couldn't care less about the tourney. A news post here, a news post there, but really it's just not interesting for me.
I really hope the players had fun, but this is not a community event yet. And when it does become something like that, with the live broadcasts, I'll spend half the time waiting for a match to begin. Frankly I'll be watching the LoL championship on my big screen, the 'team' just hasn't motivated me and mine for the AT9 at all.
Sad panda :( Ignore me
