This is a solid idea that would bring about interesting PVP and realism.
An object that you can keep in your cargo and launch in times of distress.. It would get its own button next to your capacitor.
It would appear in the overview and allow everyone in local or coming through system to see it and warp directly to it.
There would need to be an anti spam quality to it obviously and it must have some restrictions.. Maybe the activating ship's speed is reduced.. and the warp drive is inoperable threw out the duration of the beacon..
In science fiction there is always a mayday call that our heroes sometimes employ loudly. This may causes help to come but also will be heard on enemy frequency's due to the nature of the broadcast.. Making you even more vulnerable..
I hope CCP takes my idea, refines it and adds it to the game.. It will liven up PVP, even PVE'ers in trouble can use this.. Adding a tiny new facet to PVP would be a good thing, not to mention the realism it will add to the greatest science fiction MMO ever created.

Do a search for distress beacons, it gets suggested and shot down about every three months. Macrointel, the place were the nature order of the universe does not hold sway. Pirates and ore thief's are congratulated by carebears for the actions. |

Pretty much this. Do you really want more guys to come jump on you when you're dying?

There was a push just over two years ago for a type of distress beacon or player marshals to be implemented in the game that went a long away. I had to leave shortly after we started the debates, and found out only when I recently came back that it was supposed to go up before the CSM but lacked proper support and fell through.
The idea is solid. In a game where pirates basically receive all the pvp benefits, I feel it NEEDS to be addressed. The biggest issue is that it needs some serious fleshing out and must not hinder player crime too much.
It's got to be a way for 'good' players to participate more in crime and punishment, without becoming criminals themselves.

There's always the age old option of yelling for help in Local mind, that could never go wrong.

Ehh I think it would be fun.. and useful no matter what kind of space you are in. It would just add more to the realism. Its time it was given a closer look...

Gate camping...
Boredom ensues...
Enter the alt, unaffiliated with camping folks, in a bait ship...
Bait ship alt deploys distress beacon...
Campy campy gets targets to shoot at?
Even if everyone learned to ignore distress beacons except for noobs, I'd still vote for this feature!

Or more to the point, would you EVER respond to a distress beacon? I wouldn't.. 99.9999992% of the time it would be a trap..

Even more reason to introduce it in my opinion...
But lets say you were in a system ratting with the rest of your corp or alliance.. The system is incurred by hostiles. It would save you making a fleet, broadcasting it in fleet finder.. It would make you instantly savable, and vulnerable all at the same time.
Or like the previous post suggested, if you see it as a passer by and warp to it.. it might be a huge trap!
Then again a prudent captain would have no reason to respond to a distress beacon from a pilot he did not know.. maybe after to salvage
Your name in local would be highlighted as the pilot in distress so you can make this sort of determination.
I think every one would like this sort of thing added to the game.
