Hey guys,
I'm sure this kinda post has been asked before but I wanted some new opinions. I know there is no "best" ship since each ship specializes in unique tasks.
But my question is, what ship do you prefer to use in PvP due to over all versatility and effectiveness?
I'm a jack-of-all-trades kinda player (with all it's inherent weaknesses) and am looking to specialize in a PvP ship that has the most versatility, preferrably Caldaris, but I'm open to any race and any ship.
I'm leaning toward a HIC or Combat Recon. What do you think?
So lend me your wisdom.
Thanks

Edited by: Jimmy Duce on 04/05/2011 00:07:55 Typhoon TBH, and with 5 missle slots crosstrainable with caldari missle skills, but you do need drone skills to make it shine.
{EDIT}
If you like recons the rook is a pretty good solo boat now.

Typhoon as already said, works great if you are a caldari Missile trained character.
Rohk like the Phoon can sport missiles. 4 torps 4 neuts nos is a mean ship with good DPS. Neutron/AUTO fits work as well if you want pure DPS Neutrons for up close, ACs for midrange options.
Hurricane, not hard to get tech 2 guns trained up. All around the best balance of gank tank speed of PVP ships IMO.
Drake nano fits can be effective for solo.
Triple rep AC myrm. Neutralizer Domis.

I'll stop you right there, if you want versatility caldari is NOT the race for you. Damage projection and ECM are their main attributes.
Go Min/Gall for versatility. Rifter/Hurricane alone have an insane amount of feasible fits using all kinds of different setups.

I second this. Caldari and Amarr are fairly rigid in terms of viable pvp fits. Minmatar have this in spades and gallente have a few ships that can do really well in a variety of roles. Caldari really lends itself to two things: heavy missile spam (drake, tengu) and ecm spam (blackbird, falcon, rook, scorpion). Outside of that, you're getting into really small niche roles, not what you'd call flexible.

Minnmatar are by far the most versatile. In the BC and down class, they pretty much have the best ship in every class, Cain, Rupture, Thrasher, Rifter. Their t2 stuff is all great. While their BS are not quite as good as their Amarr counterpart, the Pest, Phoon, and Mael are and can be decent fleet BS.
Almost every minnie ship can be effectively shield or armor tanked. The gallente are also a good option if you want versatility, as their ships can be either armor or shield tanked, though you see gallente shield tanked a lot less.
Like said above, caldari and amarr are alot more regid.
If you want versatility you want to be able to field something good in every sort of common fleet, Alpha BS, AHAC, Nano BC, AF, etc etc etc... Minnmatar have a great option in every class. While not necessarily the best at everything, they can do it, and do it well.

Minmatar have the most versatile _lineups_. He's asking about the most versatile _ship_.
Which is, of course the Dominix. Or the Myrmidon, if you're a fan of the BC category. ---

Dominix, Typhoon, Loki, and Myrmidon are all incredibly versatile ships. Despite the Gallente being currently very weak (which they are) they still retain the Dominix which has always been the most versatile ship around, although the Typhoon is very close to taking that title after the hardpoint changes that were made some time ago.

Most versatile (but not necessarily 'best') by class, in my opinion...
Battleship: Dominix (Active, buffer, shield, armor, neuts, drones, guns) Battlecruiser: Hurricane (can shield or Armor tank, cap-less guns, can fit neuts) HAC: Ishtar (its not the best but is the most versatile) Cruiser: Rupture (same reasons as Hurricane) Frigate: Rifter (same reasons as Hurricane) Recon: Curse (although many would argue Caldari ECM)
Depending on your skillpoints you could consider cross-training. Especially for the medium sized modules. I trained Gallente, Minmattar and enough to fly a Drake (battlecruisers V and named HAMs).

Great responses, one and all. You've given me plenty to think on, while not overloading my brain....lol.
I think the whole reason I came here and asked was I just can't seem to find a good all around Caldari ship. Although the Caldari HIC and Rook both seem to come close.
I'll play around with the ships you guys have suggested to see which one feels just right.

+ RR, and if you nano it it's easy to reach BC-like speed and agility without too much compromise, to out-Myrm the Myrm in many situations.
Other than that, i stem in with the crowd. If you want a techy allround option the Tech III line was made for that, it's modular and adaptable both on it's own and into most gangs. Beside the Tech III you have the BC which are all quite allround ships but also so low skill-intense wise that it allow you to skill into several races, for a collective allround where each platform alone may reach it's limit.
BC 5 is an incredibly useful skill, to that end.

Welcome to EvE.
But really there are SOME but not very many. I typed out about 20 lines explaining each main caldari ship and what is wrong with it in regards to other race's counterparts but I will just say the ONLY rounded caldari ships are drake/tengu. All the others have specific roles or just suck.

Drone Boats tend to have the most versitility. They can carry multiple waves of drones for different purposes that include DPS, ECM, and Remote Repair. Factor in the bonused damage and that most have very balenced slot loadout.

Judging by the number of low sec pirates I see flying Hurricanes, I would have to go with that - unless it's some kind-of collective delusion...

Canes are the fastest/most agile of the BC's, have selectable damage types, can be flown AC or Arty, Shield or Armor, and have two utility slots for more DPS, Neuts, or RR.
They are also the cheapest Teir 2 BC.
A well flown Cane is a great ship.

Phoon does all what a dominix does, and can also fit torps :D

Well there is a lot of 'Jack of all trades' ships in eve.
Every ship can be fit in its own way If the logic is right within the fit, it should in theory work.
Personally though, i would go with the Myrmidon, Armor Active/buffer + Shield active/buffer, gank, decent drones.

It's the Hurricane by a longshot. You can do pretty much anything with it. It won't succeed as good as more specialized ships of course, but it will often enough manage the job.
- shield tank - armor tank - short range - mid range - it's agile (for a bc) - it's fast (for a bc)
With a nano or two you can bring it along on a nanoroam. With 720's and TE's it can be turned into a successful snipehac. You can use it in low-sec with an armor buffer. There's a reason pretty much every fleet in EVE has one. They're also very cheap.
The Pest comes close, but it doesn't have the speed and agility of a cane. Cane is the most versatile ship in the game.
