It is very frustrationg, to say it mildly. Every time you aim for a change or move to have a better look, it turn, blink or smile, dusrupting your work and overall behave like a ******. I was wondering, why majority of the avatars I see are utter crap, now I understand it better. Few people could endure this kind of challenge and not fall to click "randomize" a few times just to be able to log into game at last. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

It's a shame you can't express your opinion without the use of profanity, making various assumptions and insulting fellow players. Neither of these were required to get a point across. Instead they make your opinion look like a whine or rant, which I doubt is helpful to your cause.
Having said that, it took a little getting used to for me, but I quite like they're alive and by now wouldn't want to have it any other way.
Now, go on then, tell me my avatar is utter crap too, I shouldn't have posted here, my opinion doesn't matter etc. I'm sure you're aching for it.

I'm with the OP on this one - while the character moving around and pretending like it's a living thing is kinda interesting, it makes it hell to try and customize appearance. I suffered through it (I claim no artistic ability, merely determination) and got a result I can live with. It would have been a far less frustrating experience if there was a 'freeze animation' feature. Or if the character would just not move the head around so much.
Frankly speaking, since this is supposed to be 'our' bodies in game, having them move around without us commanding them to is at least as immersion breaking as having them look like lifeless puppets.

Your words must be making you feel good. Unfortunately for you, I don't really care if you get my message personal, or not. My every post is my personal opinion, if I need to mask it either way, I'd do it, when necessary. But restating the obvious, at least every fourth avatar I see ingame (emphasing the "ingame" word) is in no way a representation of a sane person. To put it mildly. And, overall, like from 2/3 to 3/4 of all the avatars are suffering from drastic misproportion. Comparing to the old avatars, a terrifying tendency.
Quote: Having said that, it took a little getting used to for me, but I quite like they're alive and by now wouldn't want to have it any other way.
I didn't said I don't like it... when it's appropriate. Seeing how your avatar behave overall, moving, expressing and such is wonderful... when you aren't working on it's appearance. When you do, it's, at the very least, frustrating. I've endured it long enough to create my main's face. I'm not very pleased with it, but I had to stop it at some point and free my head from the feeling it was building. Now, I have some time to create faces for other characters on my account, the login screen looks kinda wrong with silhouettes, y'know... but I just can't force myself to go through this anger again. I'd rather keep my sanity intact.

I don't see your portrait. I'm running browser with cached images only. Much faster page loading times, especially cross-server loadings, as it is in case of character portraits (they are fetched from image.eveonline.com, requiring a separate connection, slowing down page loading by 5-15 times). And I don't care about your or someone else's personal portrait specifically. It was just the overall impression. But if you insist, I could take a look. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

Completely agree with OP.
It seems in trying to build Second Life in space, CCP wasn't paying attention to Second Life. In SL, when you go to adjust your avatar's appearance, it goes into "vitruvian man" mode .. all animations stop. Makes it so much easier to actually adjust things.
Life-like avatar movements are not for the character editor, they're for whatever "life-like" environment CCP will be releasing kinda semi-shortly soon.

I like it the way it is now.
I have made dozens of characters and I find find that a 'living' avatar is much easier to get the result I want than a static one would be.

Just out of curiosity, what type of video card are you using?
I can imagine a slower card would get rather laggy from all the extra animation but a higher-end card should be less of a problem to render (but still potentially distracting).
Overall, I'd give +1 for a "Freeze" button during creation, and +πrĶ if we eventually get to create our own body mods. ----- Your Plain Text Cookie perfectly strikes New Forums, wrecking for inifnite damage. |

Take just a moment to remove your selfish attitude and think outside the box...
Your avatar and therefore vision of perfection may not be identical to someone else's. What someone else thinks looks presentable and decent may disagree with what you feel is acceptable, but it doesn't mean that you have to insult a minimum of 25% of the playerbase.
Your point of "the animation in the creator is annoying" would have been much better taken as an intelligent comment and post without insulting most of Eve's players.
Hell, I would have agreed with you to a very limited point that the animation was bugging me at times when re-creating my avatar, but now I'm just inclined to tag you with the obligatory "d-bag" word and hope that our opinions don't cross paths in the future since you seem to have a very closed-minded approach to, well... everything.
tl;dr OP is selfish and thinks his talents are all that matters since no one else's avatar creation skills are up to par with his. ---
I used to have a sig that was haxx0red by an old moderator... but I changed it since no one has those haxx0red sigs anymore and the mod has left the building. |

I hate it too, but there is no way to stop it. It was brought up many times during the testing and totally ignored. So implementing a button that simply toggles off the movement was beyond the capabilities of CCP programmers or CCP doesn't care about polishing usability of the game. Considering recent CCP shananigans it could be a bit of both.
It doesn't make creating new faces or good faces impossible, but the constant movement annoys me to such an extent, that I don't want to sculpt another face. I strongly suggest you skip the sculpting and just randomize the face until you get something you can stand to look at and then focus on the options where the movement isn't an issue. The lighting, placement of the character and posing are much more important things when making a portrait anyway.

Well, I agree, and speaking of posing and snapping chars for avatar, the movement isn't an issue (although lighting IS, it breaking the very first rule of portrait photography - NO SHADES ON FACE.) But for two faces I have specific goals I'm aiming for. I'd VERY much like to get them achieved. -- Thanks CCP for cu |

Could you let the rest of us in on this secret of what exactly would be helpful? 'Cause this issue was pointed out to CCP numerous times during testing. There was even a separate thread dedicated to this extremely annoying design decision. Now that we're well beyond the time when this could have been quickly fixed by a dedicated dev team, using harsh language is as good as anything else. ...

you know I wouldn't blame ccp if they just stop listening to the forums completely like every other large company. once you get to 350,000 users, suddenly that 5% of idiots seems like a much bigger number and it gets hard to find anything useful.

Hmm, I had no problems with creating/editing my avatars at all. It's not like they are dancing around or something absurd. They are barely moving at all and it's only a little here and there.

I think this might have been changed recently. My main avatars were fine to create, but when I went to create my alt recently, the face especially was moving around all over the place. It makes it very hard to grab and adjust a specific part of the face.
