Edited by: Krxon Blade on 13/05/2011 09:25:39 Add option to enlarge font and prove that I'm wrong.
I got free 5 days and logged yesterday just to realize that one of main reasons which pushed me to unsub was eye fatigue caused by evil small font. Yes, I know that I can lower screen resolution but then game gets cluttered with loads of panels.
PS: I don't want to sound ungrateful, thanks for 5 free days, but I simply cannot play something which causes my eyes to bleed after 30 mins, while I can enjoy other games for hours.

@ Walextheone: Sounds good, but we all know how much actual time needs to pass before CCP implements some promises.

Learn to write. Your other games could be text free fps games.
I am 37 and have no problems with the font size - I just gave you a hint.

The text size in Eve is tiny. They are working on it, but there is also the fact that Eve has to present a lot of textual information on screen, so there's a limit on how large the font can practically be. Things you can do:
- Increase it a bit in settings panel, and select "expanded" font.
- For chat windows at least, you can scale it up as large as you want.
- I recommend a 24-inch monitor

Wearing glasses myself i have to admit, that while using my laptop (1680x1050) i have some difficulties with the tiny letters but specially with the numbers. Differing 8 and 0 IG sometimes is a pain in the a**.
At home on my 22¦¦ monitor (1680x1050) everything works fine for me.

Well I'm glad that your eyesight serves you well. I'm 38 so shush and go fetch me a beer
On more serious note, I'm not lone with this problem. We had a lot of similar threads in the past. You're right about my other games not being so textual oriented, but EVe is. Which makes it even more important, I'll even say essential that part of game which presents so much of text and other information gets serious attention by serious usability experts. Otherwise everyone eyes will degrade, eventually. -- Eve Online related stuff |

Oh god, please let that be true. This game has the worst UI i've seen i a long time.
On the font size thing, i agree. I play in the unfixed windowed mode and the game default to a resolution that makes my eyes hurt.

Typical eve forum bull****. More fonts are as reasonable as it gets. Yet the answer is 'glasses'. For what it's worth OP I'm with you. --

Confirmed. At 40 with glasses EVE fonts are too small, hard to read and cause headaches and eye ache.
Also, a cause of headaches and eye ache: Jerks on the EVE forums.

Agree that the font is too small. Yes, you can enlarge the chat window fonts... but your shield resists, the index at the iHub and a mass of other displays are too tiny to read. Or if you can read them, you cannot tell if you're looking at t O, 0, D, 8, etc.
The whole Eve UI ranks amongst the worst I've had to deal with. I mean, most games even have feedback/systems in place to support colour blind players. Eve can hardly be viewed by well sighted people.

Yes the font could be easier to read. 8 and 9 in are especially difficult to tell apart.

Edited by: Ranger 1 on 13/05/2011 18:53:47 I have to support this.
I had eye surgery a few months ago on both eyes, it didn't go well and had to be redone. This means that for several months my vision wasn't really up to snuff.
I was able to play other games reasonably well by making some adjustments here and there, but I wasn't able to do so successfully with EVE (which was killin' meh).
I fully realize that EVE has so much info on the screen it makes fitting it all very, very difficult. So this isn't really a complaint. Rather it's my way of saying all of the work CCP has put into the fonts and UI remake are appreciated and needed.
Hopefully we will see improvement in those area's (beyond what has already been done) in the next update.

I read this too and it made me glad.
While I won't go to the extreme of saying they don't like older players ( i'm sure they do like older players) they may not be as accutely aware of how certain issues effect people differently.
I suspect many "senior" people there were in their earlier 30's when they started and are just approaching 40 now where a large percentage of humans suddenly begin to lose the ablity to change their focus rapidly in addition to losing vision at certain ranges as the eyes become more fixed . Glasses only partially adjust for that and while many younger programmers wore glasses all along, those of us that haven't worn glasses and have gradually changing vision and where the distance of a computer screen might require different stregnths than the distance for a book (and bifocals dont work etc).
At any rate, it is a priorty for older people and as the resolution of screens gets higher the font in some text fields doesn' get bigger as part of the screen .. some places it adjusts with the font size command but many places like markets it doesn't.
I'd also claim that things like the fast twitch response to lock a target jumping around in overview also hurts older people more. I'm not claiming everything should be slower for the lowest denominator but the ablity to freeze the movement consistantly pressing control was very important and any unrealiablity in that does hit older people harder than younger people on average . Just so its out there... not saying that changes need to be made but the effect should be considered while makeing choices.

I'm 51 I had prk surgery a few weeks ago and I can read almost everything on my 47" monitor running 1920X1080 about 15 feet away, but I can't read it on my 20 inch monitor 15 inches away running 1600X1280. My eyes were corrected for distance vision and close up detail is screwed now. The only text I really have problems with as long as I use the right monitor is dialogs other than chat, you can scale chat up but other informational dialogs, say the market, or clone lab or insurance, are just about impossible now.

For me, I cannot read the text using my new reading pescription but it works fine wtih my reading perscrption from 2 years ago (which just got a little scratch from sand in it which is a pita)
Obviously we all need glasses to be able to read our computers, but the effective font is much smaller than we'd have fonts looking on documents we were editting in word, excel , or adobe on our computers. The nature of the game also means that many windows need to be opened in the far corners of the screen or windows like trade fill a whole screen with some lines near the middle being a closer distance than those another 6 to 8 inches to to the far corner of a 24 inch screen.
No big deal when the font is a bit bigger or your eyes can still quickly change focus, but most of us lose a step on that focus adjustment thing as we get older.
But they are working on it, and that is great. Keep it near the top of the pile please!
