Are there meant to be two different shield compensation skills for each damage type? There seems to be one under Mechanic and one under Engineering with different prerequisites (according to the wiki, anyway). If they are both meant to be there, is there a purpose to training both up to any degree? |

Look again, under mechanic is for armor tanking. Those under Engineering are for shields. Training both up never hurts, You'll never know what ship you'll end up in.

Seconded.
But rather than what kind of ship you're in, I'll say "you never know when you'll need it." The extra few % resistance on your armor can save you a lot of ISK when things go wrong.

Generally speaking, the armor ones are more useful, due to prevalence of active hardeners use on shields (which only get the bonus when they are turned off, and then you are most likely going down anyway), while armor tankers often use Adaptive nano membranes which benefit greatly from the skills.
Your millage may vary. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |

1) Yes - it does help to train both.
2) But - train up the one you are using for your combat ships first - then train the other.
Shield Tanks use Mid Slots
Armor Tanks use Low Slots
Ships like Miners and Haulers - are defacto Shield Tankers - because they have other uses for those Low Slots.
Now - everyone has a use for a Hauler - so everyone has a use for some shield tanking - but what haulers mostly use is an Invulnerability module - which, as mentioned, is an active module - that only takes your compensation skills into account if it is off. So - if your combat ship is an Armor Tanker anyway - you can lower the priority for training Shield Tanking.
Now - there are your basic Shield and Armor skills:
Mechanic - Increases the amount of Structure your ship has Hull Upgrades - Increases the amount of Armor your ship has Shield Management - Increases the amount of Shield your ship has Shield Operation - Increases the rate at which your shield recharges
These skills are good for everyone to train as everyone has armor, everyone has shields and everyone has structure - whatever kind of tank they are using. Training these skills will make your ship stronger than it would be without them. For an Armor Tanker - stronger shields with a faster regeneration time - will mean that much more time before you have to start your Armor tank. For a Shield Tanker - more armor and more structure - give you that much better a chance to GTFO if you Shield Tank fails.
That said - this bit of advice is about increasing the basic strength of your ship - it is NOT a recommendation to split Tanks. For the most part - you want to but all the PG/CPU you've got into the tank that will work best for your ship - instead of having two weak tanks that can be easily defeated in series.
The exception to that - is mostly for people using a Hull Tank - which is tanking structure. Certain ships, such as an Orca, because it has a lot of structure - benefit from this type of tank because they have a LOT of structure. Put a reinforced bulkhead module and a Damage Control II on there - and you've got a fairly good structure tank - but - you've also got PG/CPU left over that you can put into your shields - so why not? This type of tank can yield about 200,000 EHP ... Now ... of course ... this doesn't mean someone can't blow you up ... it just means they're going to have to work a lot harder to do it ...

I have a question on those if I could hijack a bit here...
"To active shield hardeners: 3% bonus per skill level to Shield EM resistance when modules are not active. To passive shield hardeners: 5% bonus per skill level to Shield EM resistance."
Does that mean a flat +3%/5% per level, or +3%/5% to what that shield hardener gives me?
Lets say a passive shield hardener gave me 10% (hypothetical). Would it now give me 15%, or 10.5%?
It's confusing because if the active one is NOT ACTIVE what is it increasing by 3%? But if it's adding a flat amount, why would it give more to passive then active?

Edited by: foksieloy on 15/05/2011 09:35:35 Edited by: foksieloy on 15/05/2011 09:35:01 Lets take a Magnetic scattering amplifier II and photon scattering Field II as examples.
With no support skills the first gives 37.5% resistance. The second gives 55% resistance.
With lvl 5 em compensation the first gives 46.875% and second still gives 55%. When you turn off the PSF II without compensation it gives 0% and with compensation V it gives 15%.
I hope that clears it up. _______________________ The best thing in EvE is Barrage M. |
