Freelancer is still alive and kicking! Has a pretty sizeable community behind it still. I encourage anyone who is bored of eve online to torrent and iso of freelancer and install discovery mod. Has a few servers still up and running. Also version 4.86 of the discovery mod is in the works with player created bases. Come feel immersed and play now!

If anyone is interested in playing and needs help, I'm currently playing on the Discovery usa 24/7 server. It's quite a large and scary world out there.

I had a lot of fun with FL, I loved the lore and the art design, and the combat was fun, until I eventually felt the "2-d-ness" of it. What I mean is, except in "turret mode", which you could only use for combat in the certain types of ships, and was otherwise purely aesthetic, you never really got a feel for travelling through 3-d space.
EVE's system is a great improvement on that (perma "turret mode" basically). STO's ship combat also uses something similar, and is a lot of fun too, in its own rather more twitchy way - I actually think it's a great balance between twitch and sim, whereas EVE's is definitely more towards the sim.
I've never understood the obsession some people seem to have with cockpit flying - it's basically just shooting on a 2-d screen. Having a full sense of 3-d space is much more awe-inspiring. Maybe it's just a question of what you cut your teeth on (Wing Commander, the Star Wars games, Starlancer, Freelancer, etc.) *****

This thread belongs in OOPE.
If Freelancer is good, how come you're playing on the Eve forums?

I love having a reason to break out the joystick. I didn't blow money on a 3 axis with an 8-way hat for nothing. My first exposure to videogames was DOS flight sims. F-19 Stealth Fighter and Chuck Yeager Flight Sim. Later I would find Privateer and the Wing Commander Universe. I think Independence War deserves a mention, that game was tough as hell, real newtownian physics.
The lack of any space dog fight games is why I was drawn to eve. I was actually playing the opensource remake of Privateer prior to trying eve. Doing actual dog fight maneuvers with a stick is thrilling to me, especially if the game has good physics and AI. I do enjoy the Ace Combat games, even though they are very arcade-ish.
